Saxons’ link-up key to Ollie Frost

Young scrum-half Ollie Frost is making a name for himself at Worcester Warriors – and puts his promotion to the first team down to his links with Stourbridge Saxons.
The powerful 20-year-old has been involved in three of the last five games played by the Championship frontrunners, making his league debut for the Sixways side against Cornish Pirates at the end of October.
Although he was on the field for less than half-an-hour, he still managed to impress the Sixways coaches.
Not that that will have come as a surprise to those who have been watching his development at Saxons this season, where Frost has been one of a handful of young players handed the chance to impress Tony Windo, who is combining his coaching role at Sixways with that of head coach with the Stourton Park outfit.
And Frost believes it’s the link between the clubs that has helped secure him his chance with the Warriors first-team.
The Hereford-born scrum-half explained: “The arrangement with them has been really good and it means I’ve been getting plenty of rugby.
“Playing so much means I’m not rusty when I get the call-up – I’m raring to go.
“I can be playing on a Saturday for Stourbridge and then for Worcester in an A-League fixture on the Monday. It’s tiring but it’s good and what I need as I develop as a rugby player this season.
“It’s good to get the chance to show Richard Hill and some of the Warriors coaches just what I’ve been working on during my games in the A League and also for Stourbridge.”
With Frost now turning out for Worcester on a regular basis, the Saxons have another Academy hopeful in their ranks – fellow scrum-half Louis Silver – who will be challenging Tommy Richardson for the number 9 shirt when the team head north to play Sedgley Park on Saturday.
A number of the Stourbridge players have also been involved in Worcester’s A League games and Frost believes the arrangement has helped them.
He added: “There are a number of the Academy lads playing at Stourbridge but there are also some of their lads who are training with the Academy and playing in our A League games.
“That means they get the benefit of full-time training and they are also getting seen by the Warriors coaches.”
