Teenage ace dreams of Grand Slam
Monday 25th October 2010, 8:00AM BST.
Wednesfield teenager Ash Khayat is dreaming of a spot at the Grand Slam of Darts after going through to the PDC Unicorn Under-21 World Championship.
The 18-year-old will be one of 50 regional winners forming part of a 64-man tournament at the Barnsley Metrodome, after success in the Wolverhampton heat at the city centre’s Rileys Bar on Saturday.
A wildcard for Wolverhampton’s professional tournament in November is up-for-grabs for the top two, with a £10,000 grand prize for the overall winner.
The pair will also be invited to join the PDC ProTour in 2011 and 2012 as a full-time professional.
Khayat and Telford’s Sam Hamilton will both go to Barnsley after winning in the semi-finals, with no final played as two qualified from the tournament.
The teenage ace bested Jordan Cook 4-0, Paddy Thomas 4-0 and Mark Zambra 5-4 in the semis, conceding only four legs in the tournament.
It added to the England Youth Masters, the Welsh Youth Masters and the Vauxhall Youth Masters that the prospect already has in the bag.
But Khayat – who beat five-time world champion Eric Bristow at Rileys in an exhibition in May – wants more ahead of his next big night in Barnsley on November 6.
He said: “I am delighted to have finally done something I have wanted to do since I started playing darts.”
