Roberto Di Matteo backing Harry Redknapp’s England claim
Friday 10th September 2010, 11:23AM BST.
Roberto Di Matteo believes he could be up against England’s next manager at The Hawthorns tomorrow.
Di Matteo admits that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp must be considered the leading candidate to step into the hot seat now that his fellow countryman Fabio Capello has confirmed he will quit in 2012.
“At the moment, yes, you would have to say Harry is the favourite,” agreed Di Matteo. “He is a great guy, a great manager and a very likeable person as well. But at the moment it’s a hypothetical question – many things can change between now and then.”
Redknapp, who will have his deadline day recruit from Real Madrid Rafael Van der Vaart available for a debut at the ground where he began his White Hart Lane regime, again finds himself at the centre of attention on his Hawthorns return.
“Whoever takes it gets absolutely slaughtered,” said Redknapp. “Probably the only person who has escaped it has been Terry Venables in Euro 96. But, since then, everybody’s had it.
“Probably even the great Bobby Robson. He got slaughtered at one stage – made his life a misery.
“People will always take it because, if you’re English, it’s the pinnacle of your career if you’re in management.
“You’ve got to take the job if you get offered it.”
Redknapp has more immediate problems to contend with as this Albion game precedes a trip to tackle Werder Bremen in the Champions League, all of which must be negotiated without injured England duo Michael Dawson and Jermain Defoe.
Spurs are still without Heurelho Gomes – either Carlo Cudicini or new signing Stipe Pletikosa will cover – while William Gallas is set for his Spurs debut to replace the injured Dawson.
Redknapp will also need to give fitness tests to Peter Crouch (back) and David Bentley (ankle). Luka Modric (hamstring) could still be missing.
With Crouch a doubt, Harry Redknapp may consider using Robbie Keane. The Irishman has scored eight goals in six Premier League starts against Albion.

Absolutely agree with JTH on this one, it’s an absolute no-brainer, though I fear the FA will go for a yes man again, Harry isn’t one of those, just like Cloughie all those years ago.
