We either step up or get left behind

Walsall blogger Mark Jones finds himself surprisingly worried about the resurgence of Shrewsbury after they, like the Saddlers, came into the money.

So after all the doom and gloom, the critics and the hard-edged cynics like me were proved wrong.

The under-fire manager got his tactics right – and his substitutions for that matter – the players finally delivered out on the pitch, there were goals galore and everybody seems reasonably happy again.

OK, so the opposition were modest but you can only beat what’s in front of you, there will be tougher tests to come and of course we’ve still got the gutter press to contend with.

Anyway enough about England, how did the mighty Walsall do last weekend?

Well I’m afraid to say there’s nothing new to report – if you want a match review you might as well check out all the other blogs I’ve written this season and change the date and name of the opposition.

In fact, I have got a slightly creepy feeling that you might be able to do that for the next eight-and-a-half months.

For me, the only real negative to come out of the wins over Bulgaria and Switzerland were Joe Hart’s first competitive caps.

Not in the mainly assured and confident performance of the nation’s most promising number one, but the fact that former club Shrewsbury will receive a reported £500,000 as a result.

Yes, our old adversaries from out in the country are in the money. They celebrated by going top of League Two on Saturday in front of over 5,000 fans in their new-ish stadium.

The big question for them is how they will use their windfall in their quest to get out of the bottom division at the 13th attempt, with a year in-between to go back to their non-league roots.

It should be a big worry to everyone connected with Walsall if, one year from now, the Shrews are ahead of us in the league hierarchy too.

But just hold on there, before we all get too depressed, haven’t we got money to spend too?

Reportedly the Troy Deeney deal was worth £500,000 and Rene Gilmartin netted us another £75,000.

Surely signing one player without a club and two on looan deal can’t have made too much of a dent into our resources.

That’s the challenge for those at the club who can make a difference.

Certainly an incentive to invest in the squad, but let’s not forget that Shrewsbury are yet to spend their windfall either.

The wider concern is how we get more people through the turnstiles. The £10 ticket offer a week on Saturday is a step in the right direction, but none of the floating fans who take up that offer will return unless we put on a show!
