Jonas Olsson’s second survival bid

Albion defender Jonas Olsson continues his second Premier League challenge convinced the club have made big strides towards lasting the distance.

The Baggies are criticised for being too soft in their previous top-flight excursion with Tony Mowbray, have registered more optimism with supporters and the team’s sturdy response to the opening-day mauling at Chelsea.

It has got Albion fans, buoyed still further by a flurry of late signings before the transfer window closed, looking ahead with more optimism.

Now Olsson believes it is an optimism that is justified.

He said: “I hope we are learning. Obviously we wanted more than three points after three games but we knew the first games were going to be tough and there are a few tough ones coming up again.

“But, with the performance at Liverpool, we will go into the Tottenham game still with high confidence.

“We played a good home game against Sunderland and the performance against Liverpool was good even though the result wasn’t.

“We felt that we could have got something out of the Liverpool game, so going to Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium we want that feeling again. The nice thing about the English league is that it is very tight.

“If we all stay well we can get something from any team, especially at the Hawthorns.”

Albion will take the frustrations of their Anfield visit into the Spurs match, with Olsson eager to avoid another year of being praised for their football while losing matches.

He said: “I would rather the team played terribly and got something out of the game.

“It’s difficult to analyse because straight after the game it doesn’t matter to me what the performance is like, I am just as disappointed if we lose 6-0 or 1-0.

“But, with that said, the performance was alright so we will take that with us and work with it.”

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
