Albion learn from Luke Moore flop
Wednesday 8th September 2010, 10:59AM BST.
Albion chairman Jeremy Peace admits the club’s Luke Moore nightmare has helped shape a new transfer strategy at the Hawthorns.
The Baggies are preparing to take a hit on the £3.5million former Villa striker, now on the outside looking in after being omitted from Albion’s 25-man Premier League squad.
That has left the one-time England prospect looking for a career-rescuing loan to the Championship or beyond, while wearing the label of the club’s most expensive flop.
Peace admits the loss his club will suffer on a striker whose five goals have each cost Albion £700,000 has shaped future transfer planning.
The Baggies have focused this summer’s search on players who did not command big transfer fees, helping the club extend its wages package.
Peace says: “We’ve had Luke who came in for £3.5million, Leon Barnett who came in for £2.9million, although to be fair they were a few years ago.
“People make mistakes but I’m sure we’ll be fine from now. There will always be mistakes in the transfer market but hopefully we can cut down on them. It’s part of the club moving on and getting stronger.
“Perhaps it’s because of what we paid for Luke that this is one of the reasons we’re not paying big transfer fees, but now looking at paying more on wages.”
Sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth has sympathy for the 24-year-old, who was given a fresh chance by head coach Roberto Di Matteo a year ago but faded as the promotion line neared.
Ashworth is still optimistic Moore will find a fresh start elsewhere – Ipswich are among the interested parties – and said: “We’ve had some interest in Luke but not a firm offer.
“Ideally we want to get him out on loan and I’m sure we will.”

JP……The man who never made a mistake either never made a decision or never lived. The important part of making mistakes is learning from them and not repeating them (to oftern).
We have moved on enormously in the last few years and now have the best squad since the 70s (on paper). We now have to get on the pitch and do the business. No one can say the Chairman, Dan Ashworth and Manager (Coach) hav’nt done there bit now its for the players when they cross that “white line”.
what about the valero flop! another 5m wasted! thats 11.5m wasted!

Seriously, we need to move on from this situation. I do feel some sympathy for Luke, yes he has been a poor addition to the team and yes he has cost the club a lot of money, but lets move on.

Can’t help feeling a bit sorry for him hearing this sort of stuff.

I know i am going to wind up the Peace brigade, but was it not Mr Peace who saddled us with Moore in the Davies deal ?.
Mr Peace then states the club has learned from previous mistakes but did we not try and sign Djemba Djemba this summer ?.
I await my punishment.
It could have been worse. So far,the ‘new’ wolves strikers are probably averaging about £5 million per goal.Oh dear.

luke moore came in as part of the curtis davies deal !!! so neither villa or us did any good, moore is so frustrating he easily has the ability but not the motivation i would bet he will be succesful elsewhere !!!!( in his first ganes he hit the bar and the post if those had gone in who knows!!!!)
Wall Heath
Come on lets be fair, nobody knows how Djemba-Djemba would’ve got on. He’s admitting there have been mistakes (and always will be), we’ve tried doing it differently and arguably done some good business this summer, I’m not sure what you would expect him to say or do?
My only gripe with this article is that whether we like it or not, Moore and Barnett are still Albion players, and worst-case scenario may still have a part to play if we suffer badly with injuries and suspensions. It strikes me as odd for JP to hang those two out to dry whilst they’re still at the club.
P.S. Did Peace choose Moore?? Maybe you know something I don’t, but as far as I was aware, JP doesn’t identify our transfer targets?

Ebanks Blake – Cost £1.5M average just under £4,000 a goal, probably worth £5 million?
Doyle – Cost £6.5M avergae £700,000 a goal. worth £9 – 12M?
Fletcher – unfair to comment after a few games…fair enough?
This is not a Baggies V Wolves thing, you’ve got Luke Moore worth a few pence at most and Graham Dorrans cost next to nothing worth £7 Million? This is just facts which you dont seem to have!! Just a lazy post!
For what Its worth I think we’ll both stop up.

SIR TERRY BAGGIE
Youre even worse…shouldnt you be back at School by now?
Come on, be fair it is wrong to compare Curtis and Luke. Luke isn’t as skilled as Curtis at shooting his mouth off and lacks the ability to stroke his own ego so effectively.
The Villians thought they’d killed two birds with one stone; got rid of a problem and brought a star of the future. The Albion thought they’d recreate characters from English literature – Scrooge and Dr Doolittle.
Both came to regret their haste.
9 Yeah, it could be worse we could have a goals for 1 – goals against 7 record so far!
Sad baggie, valero has been sold back for a slight profit, genius by peace. Anyway, forget moore, scharner is the man. What a fantastic signing, this guy will make us tick. Paul scharner, player of the season, get your specs and coloured wigs ready for the last away game. Legend already.
Valero is a skillful player who is suited to Spanish football and not the Premiership. We received loan fees for him last season and will, it seems, eventually make a profit, albeit after a few years. Not quite the same as losing probably over 2.5 million on Moore plus his wages over three years. Then again, Villa will have to take a massive loss on Curtis Davis. He isn’t the player they thought he was!
On the other Albion article by Dan Ashworth which we are not able to comment on, it is nice to actually have some information from people at the club which helps us to understand what they are thinking and how things are done. I know they can’t give information all the time especially who they are chasing in the transfer market, for fear of alerting other clubs, as has happened a few times, but a bit more information released at times uring the season would help relieve some of the frustration we fans feel when we know absolutely nothing

No 8 you are dead right mate it was Mr Peace that brought Luke Moore to the Baggies not the Manager, it was all tied up with Curtis deal, not initially but later. Though Robson wanted Barnett. The latter did not work out which happens but the former was never that good at Villa.

Thanks for the tip!
As for Luke Moore, I’m a big fan of JP and his astute business sense but I’m not sure describing Moore as an expensive mistake will get the phone ringing off the hook. Or mybe this is part of a cunning plan.
Boing Boing.
Let’s get things in perspective. Tony Mowbray had his team play football the way it SHOULD be played, going all out to win. In today’s football you can have 80% possession and lose 1-0. Parking the bus is the order of the day. I don’t like it, but we’re stuck with it. JP backed Mowbray above and beyond the call of duty, but we did get two visits to Wembley plus a promotion and it was fun. Great fun. There were more than enough dodgy purchases to frighten the life out of an accountant, yet somehow, we stayed viable as a Company. That was no accident and also just imagine the howls of frustration and rage had JP NOT backed him. We’ve just built the equivalent of The Queen Mary and yet the flak until days ago was non-stop! Whether Mowbray wanted Luke Moore or not is irrelevant. With his background we thought he’d come good in a pure footballing team. Nor will I subscribe to the ‘Davies was useless’ school. He wasn’t, he was a potential England player but his head got too big for his hat and blurred his vision. Barnett was a bit of a gamble in that Luton finding TWO top class centre halves so easily was a big ask. He may yet make a fine Championship player but that’s not to be sniffed at. We’ve got three points out of nine and still some frightening away matches in the immediate future. We, the crowd, must hold our nerve, keep positive, because the team is going to get a thorough examination. Roberto will have his methods tested too. It will be white knuckle for a few weeks.
Peace seems to forget how many clubs we have sold duds to for inflated prices.
Greening
Koumas
Davies
kamara
Valero
Robinson
Non of the above have better their careers away from use. Greening has a europa league runners up medal but he was a sub for the whole season.
Its swings and roundabouts and we got lumbered with moore, who was a make weight for a vastly overpriced davies.
Its unfair of peace to mention barnett, he figured heavily for us until last season and has contributed to our uprising.
My mrs brother went to ask moore for his shirt after a game last season, didnt give him the shirt but gave him £40 to buy a new one from the club shop. He asked David Bentley a few seasons ago for a augograph, he pushed past him and nearly knocked him over.
Why are we trying to cover for Luke.
He is not interested is a pretty poor stiker no one in the Championship will be interested. Probably conference is his level. Tell it straight even the manager tried to cover for him. A poor signing by JP as part of the Davies deal, went wrong get rid. Attitude stinks, dont want him around reserves or kids to disrupt them.
I dont actually think Luke Moore is as bad
as people are making out,the kid tryed his
heart out last season and if it wasnt for him
hitting the post and bar on the odd occasion
he could easily have hit double figures.
If Albion fans want to see a lazy, always injured, cant be botherd, one footed turkey,
then take a look at Ishamel Miller.
How did our fans expect Luke Moore to perform
at 100% when they were booing the guy before he even stepped out on the feild. If I was a
Championship manager I`d snap him up quickly
as he`s got pace,2 decent feet, and can be
very good at linking the play.

I have my suspicions, but ignoring those for the time being.
Ebanks Blake.
He is now the new, next best thing.
However, a few short months ago he was useless acording to most Wolves fans (something uniquley typicaly wolf)
Fletcher
he did very well at Burnley, time will tell if he can have the same impact at Wolves, who are not so expansive as Burnley were.
Doyle
Absolute quality, he could walk into far better teams than the Wolves.
To quote Del Boy, he is the creme-del-a-menth, so i would agree in his case.
Bednar managed to score a few goals during our last sortie in the Premier league, probably equivelent to the above mentioned.
Cox hasn`t had too many games, so a little unfair to judge, but i think he does have the attributes.
Fortune will be a big player for us this year.
And finaly, may i remind you of Odemwingie and Thcoyi,
both of whom i would rather have than E Blake and Fletcher.
61. Wolves fan in peace here.
How were Burnley more expansive? Wolves have played 4-4-2 in every game this season and we are unbeaten and scored in every match?
Odemwingie – Hasnt ever played at a decent club and only TIME will tell if he is good enough.
Thcoyi – As you open admitted yourself you never saw him play before he joined Albion so blue n white tinted glasses on there I think.
From an unbias point of view the only Albion players that could get into Wolves team are Morrison (whilst Hunt is injured) and that is it. Dorrans will find the step up hard as the championship was woeful last season hence Blackpools promotion with the same side that nearly got relegated the season before.

Or we could play it clever and wait for the scrap metal price to rise again and make a killing with all that corrugated steel. 3. We loan out all your players to lower leauges where they will feel more at home. 4. What strip do we play in ? Well, we need one thats world famous and looks great. Gold and black it is then. Just to fair to you stripies, the wash tag in the back of the shirts can be Blue n white stripes. 5. THE BIG ONE. What shall we call ourselves ? RONNIE ALLEN. In case you missed that:
RONNIE ALLEN SIGNED CYRILLE REGIS FOR ALBION !
There, now I feel better.

To all the Wolves fans that are saying Scharner is a better defender than midfeilder.
Wigan had a talented group of players last season and have done for a good few years now.
They still have a pretty decent squad but they have fallen short of thier potential. They have money and they have talent so the only reason for thier short comings must be atributed to mis-management.
Martinez played Scharner out of position even though the player knew he was better employed in a midfeild role. The result is a team who end up fighting relegation when they should’ve been comfortable.
RDM is no fool. He will play Scharner where he thinks he will be effective and I trust his decision.
Also, can Wolves fans stop saying that Wigan dropped Scharner when he refused to re-sign for them and ended up coming to us? It just shows the lack of real knowlege some people come onto this site and comment with.
I don’t doubt that Doyle is a fantastic striker, SEB was cracking at championship level but he won’t carry on his purple patch for long in the prem but Fletcher is not the player you seem to think he is.
Beware the Baggies Wolves fans, I think you’ve written us off too soon.

Love the fact that you have resorted to name calling, shows you don’t really have an argument!!

You don’t need long drawn out reasons, I feel sorry for him’s and oh jp this jp that.
Villa off loaded him to us for the same reason we want to offload him now. In professional footballing terms :-
HE’s CRAP !
and
WE WERE SUCKERED (BIG TIME)!
End of story.

Morning Cyril – I would normally never question anything you say on these pages as your memory is far better than mine – but I always thought it was John Giles who signed Big Cyrille after Ronnie Allen “spotted” him…. but I may well be wrong (again).

76 Lonewolf (I wonder why you are alone?). Your spelling is atrocious, the confusion of your mind, total, your concepts of humour childish. Oh and by the way, et cetera is Latin for ‘and the rest’. It is abbreviated to ‘etc’, not ‘ect’, an abbreviation for
Electro Convulsive Therapy. You might like to look into that. It can, properly administered,
return one to a semblance of normality, away from the meanderings of the misguided mind.

76 lonewolf-it’s amusing to see your pathetic attempts at ‘clever’ wind-ups,but whenever I ask why Albion keep beating wolves year after year,or why your ‘magnificent’ wunderers have massively underachieved (even wasting millions of Sir Jack’s money)for so long, you go verrrrry quiet.Still, you have to come over here, because it seems thousands of season ticket holders are deserting you,so you need someone to talk to.

84. Morning Happy. I did a longish email to E&S explaining the sort of point you mention.
John Giles was in the process of resigning at the Albion because he wanted a bigger say and I think, a directorship. Ronnie had spotted Cyrille at Hayes and wanted the club to sign him, but at £5,000 they were not interested. Ronnie then said he’d pay the 5 grand himself and lease him to the club. So the club paid up. Technically, you are right, but I doubt Johnny was very interested by then. Now, I am digging back a bit, but I have had this argument with several newspapers, all of whom have retracted and corrected. Nothing has changed, as yet, in the article above this one. I wait with bated breath!

Sir Terence. It was Ronnie allen mate. I thought I had mentioned somewhere before, but I might be mistaken. Anyway, in case I didn’t,
IT WAS RONNIE ALLEN !

Cyril.
I wrote a post agreeing with you last night but it disappeared. It stated that BFR tends to ‘allow’ the media to give him the credit for putting that great side together. In reality he only signed Brendan Batson the rest were already there.
I think that during Johnny Giles time, although he was manager he worked with Ronnie Allen like Clough and Taylor. Ronnie went out and spotted the players and Johnny worked with them on the training pitch.
It was a tremendous combination and had we kept it together longer, I suppose if the board had a bit more ambition or JG a bit less, who knows how far they might have taken us. I blame the dark days of the nineties on BFR’s spend, spend, spend regime and the fact that he jettisoned our extremely successful youth system. He was only interested in ready made players.
Why did you get me back on this subject Cyril? You know what I’m like.
