Ten clubs track Albion’s Chris Wood

No fewer than 10 Championship clubs are on the trail of Albion’s young striker Chris Wood – but it is not yet certain he will go out on loan.

The 18-year-old New Zealander, who already has one World Cup to his name, is being heavily linked to a loan spell with Derby as a replacement for their recently-sold former Albion striker Rob Hulse.

But the youngster is not going anywhere until injury problems for fellow strikers Roman Bednar and Ishmael Miller have cleared – and even then his exit is not certain.

Sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth said: “We’ve had 10 Championship clubs in touch with us about Chris – not just Derby.

“No deal has been agreed with any club yet and none will be agreed unless it suits West Bromwich Albion.

“I’m not surprised there is so much interest in him, because he has done very well for us last season and enjoyed a terrific World Cup.

“I would also remind everyone that at the moment he is in our first team squad and came on against Liverpool at Anfield where he did very well.

“It is not yet set in stone that he will go on loan anywhere.”

Although the loan window is now open, Wood is more likely to be in boss Roberto Di Matteo’s squad for the Spurs clash this weekend than lining up for a Championship side.

Di Matteo added: “I am in favour of Chris Wood playing every weekend, but we saw last weekend how valuable Chris was for us.

“We have Miller injured for quite a substantial period of time and Bednar pulled out in the warm-up.

“We might have to wait for other players to get better and then we will reassess the situation and see how it goes. A loan would benefit him.

“At his age he will only become a better player by playing regularly.

“In our team he might get some chances to play but he won’t be playing week in, week out for 90 minutes.”

Chris Wood is the tip of a plethora of young
talent rising through the ALBION Academy. Give them a few more years and ALBION will be a very strong club. We have a very talented
squad as it stands. Seems like lots of clubs want our young and hungries.

No.1 Jack. I was going to say that. Still, great minds think alike hey? Chris Wood has a certain ‘presence’ when he comes on and has a knack of attracting defenders to him, always a good sign for a forward. Others are seeing this potential, hence the ten or so clubs trying for a loan. He’d probably walk into the Wulfies team but they wouldn’t want to give him back, so that’s out.

If Albion want to loan him out then I`d only
do so to a possible promotion winning team
ie IPSWICH TOWN.I absoultuly hate Derby County fans with a passion along with that
    manager and Robbie Savage!!!.

    Cyril,
I’ve said before, Chris Wood reminds me of Derek Kevan. He is also a world cup player
and he hasn’t wore out his first set of pro-boots yet. Don’t be concerned about the wolves
he’s too talented for them anyway. I don’t think he’ll be loaned out but if I’m wrong I hope it’s to a decent club. There again ALBION
will look after him. Sorry for jumping the gun.

Yeah we’re so obsessed with the mighty WWFC. I suppose that’s why half the posts on here are from your lot. Have a look on your own side, barely a post from a Baggie. Says it all really.

306 goals all in the lower leagues. Are you trying to tell us something about your expectations for the future.

No.7. In one way I’m glad you had Stevie Bull in that the Moulinex would be a supermarket if you hadn’t and we’d have no one to torment. Certainly the biggest ‘Buy One Get One Free’ your club will ever drop lucky for. I doubt even Sir Jack could have stepped in soon enough back then. Remember than, YOU OWE US ONE because we saved you in a roundabout way!
The newer topic on Dan Ashworth and Albion’s money deserves a reply box gentlemen of E&S.
Supporters do get to the top men and worry them into possible errors. We should show patience. It ain’t easy spending millions. Well done Dan for explaining what goes on.

You’re right, a very good interview which will hopefully explain things a bit more clearly.

As people have pointed out on here before, it’s not Championship Manager and it’s not like the days of Brian Clough when he would get the player and his dad in his office and lock the door until he’d convinced him to sign. These days there will be a team of agents negotiating before the player even listens to the terms.

Also you can’t add X-the amount the club gets from Sky to Y-incoming transfer fees to give you Z-a lump sum that is then available to spend on whichever player we decide should come to our club.

I can understand your still smiling. I remember when we were in the old third division for a couple of seasons, it felt like we were Barcelona. Although we have no experience of sinking as low as the fourth it must have been great fun pretending to be a big club. Even when your crowds dropped as low as they did.
It still makes me smile anyway.
Almost as much as overhauling your eleven point lead. Did you get the money back for the holiday you booked during the play offs BTW? LOL.

PS. I don’t snoop around the Wolves site. I read the articles and occasionally comment if I have something sensible to add. You would know this if you ever went on there. Feel free to keep commenting on here as I love the target practice and at least you’re grown up enough to use a real identity.

No offence taken. It’s a rough and tumble on here and as I’ve said before to brummierobwolves and others, I’m sure if we met in the pub we;d have a pint and a laugh together. No problems with blokes like you that come on in your own name and stand up to take the flak in return.
