Aston Villa await news on James Collins
Saturday 4th September 2010, 12:59PM BST.
Villa were today awaiting news on James Collins after the defender suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone from an X-rated challenge while on Wales duty.
Replays appeared to show Montenegro’s Miodrag Dzudovic catching Collins with a stray elbow during last night’s 1-0 defeat for the Welsh and the centre-back had to be taken to hospital for scans.
Wales boss John Toshack was furious with the challenge and claimed it was no accident.
He said: “His eye is in a mess and we think he may have fractured his cheekbone. We won’t know until we have the X-rays but you don’t get that sort of injury by falling on the floor.”
And Collins had little recollection of the incident that forced him off.
“I just remember going up for the header and then I don’t know what’s gone on, I can’t remember,” he said.
Meanwhile, Villa plan to unveil Martin O’Neill’s replacement early next week with former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier still very much the frontrunner.
Houllier, 63, has assured Villa that his past health problems are behind him after undergoing heart surgery in 2001.

Anyone leading with the elbow and connecting
with it should be banned for as long as the victim is unfit to play through that injury.
There’s no excuse for this type of challenge.
