Let’s give Marcus Bent a fair chance
Friday 3rd September 2010, 9:10AM BST.
Wolves blogger Tim Spiers believes new striker Marcus Bent should be given a fair crack of the whip after a lukewarm reaction to his arrival.
Anticipation was rife in the pubs of Wolverhampton on Saturday evening.
It was nothing to do with offer of cheap lager preceding a bit of a boogie and a rather questionable ‘meat’ flavoured kebab later that night.
No, following a frustrating 1-1 draw with Newcastle, talk among Wolves fans had turned to the up and coming transfer deadline day.
With Andy Keogh departing Molineux and Michael Mancienne thankfully signing on for yet another season, the only space left in boss Mick McCarthy’s squad was a striker-shaped hole alongside Kevin Doyle, Steven Fletcher and the rejuvenated Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
The bidding started high – Robbie Keane was destined for a Molineux homecoming many, including me during my wildest dreams, seemed to think. No chance of that, he’s needed for Tottenham’s Champions League campaign.
How about Daniel Sturridge then? Ditto for Chelsea.
Well maybe Emile Heskey, he could do a job? Still in Villa’s first team, no chance. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink then?
And so the sights continued to drop lower and lower as the hours ticked down to Wednesday.
Then came the breaking news – we were to become Marcus Bent’s 14th professional club.
I think it’s fair to say most Wolves fans didn’t do a lap of the living room when they heard of the 32-year-old’s arrival from the Blue Noses.
On reading the headline ‘Wolves swoop for Birmingham striker’ I was terrified Mick has decided to give Kevin Phillips a hand in his quest to play for every club in the West Midlands, so personally this news came as a relief to me.
A top class poacher Phillips may well be, but I’ve never liked his attitude and I get the impression the feeling is mutual from him towards Wolves in general – Walsall are more than welcome to have you next season, Kevin.
In truth Bent’s signing was a little underwhelming, even more so when our fellow Midlanders and competitors for mid-table Premier League spots – Blues and Stoke – announced the impressive headline-grabbing captures of Alexander Hleb and Eidur Gudjohnsen.
But the disrespectful, negative reactions I read and heard from Wolves supporters were totally unjust.
Everyone fan is entitled to their opinion and mine is that no player should be judged until we’ve seen him play in gold and black.
Many have decided to cast their aspersions already, some even going so far as to joining a Facebook group urging Mick not to play Bent. It’s, frankly, pathetic and embarrassing.
These people may have forgotten the similarly negative, if not quite as vitriolic, sentiments when the unheralded Chris Iwelumo joined from Charlton in 2008, before big ‘Lumes’ went on to play a huge role in our promotion campaign and become something of a cult hero in the process.
Yes Bent hasn’t got the star quality of the aforementioned Gudjohnsen or Mr Keane, but since when was Mick McCarthy’s Wolves about marquee signings?
Huge emphasis is placed by the manager, chief executive Jez Moxey and owner Steve Morgan on the personality of any potential signing and whether they fit into the current ethos of the club, namely hard working, not in it for the money and unlikely to upset the applecart.
This policy might not see us rocket up to a top half finish this, or even next, season but when things go belly up at Blues.
The inevitable cracks are already appearing at St Andrew’s, with manager Alex McLeish’s contract spat, and at Stoke, who have no points from three games and they have signed Jermaine Pennant to boost team morale.
But we will still be there, steadily but securely making progress year on year, as has been achieved almost without fault since 2006.
Give me 11 limited but wholehearted Jody Craddocks and Karl Henrys sweating blood for the cause over inconsistent flair players who rarely reach their full potential any day.
That’s why David Jones gets in the Wolves line-up every week, while the enormously talented but exasperatingly lackadaisical Nenad Milijas doesn’t.
In Bent’s case – and something has clearly gone wrong in the past if the guy has got a list of clubs so long it wouldn’t fit on Terry Connor’s clipboard – let’s hope he’s hungry to prove himself in what could be his last chance in the top flight.
Professionalism, commitment and a willingness to sacrifice personal gains for the good of the team, as with Ebanks-Blake so far this season, goes a long way in the hearts and minds of the Molineux masses.
Smacking the Wolves badge on your shirt in appreciation while warming up as a sub, before shuffling onto the field and meandering impassively after through balls – step forward Marlon Harewood – doesn’t.
So get your head down Marcus, work hard, put a shift in for Mick, don’t go moaning to the press if you’re not in the team, give us 100 per cent and take your chances when they come your way.
That’s been the Wolves recipe for success for the past four years and long may it continue.
And if you slam home the winner at the Hawthorns on December 19, we will build a statue in your honour.

Correct – Marcus Bent should be given a fair chance.
Who were people expecting as our 4th choice striker? Torres?Rooney?Drogba?
He’s now a Wolves player until Jan 4th so give him support.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about.
Hoff had to go because he has fell out with Mick.
Big Chris whet in what is so obviously as trade off as part of the Fletcher deal. £500,000 for him alone no chance.
Vokes impresses me but Mick seems to think he’s still not ready.
If heard mentioned that we should have just kept Keogh. Personally I think he is a better player than Bent but he doesn’t want to be forth string and why should he if half the fans yell abuse at him all the time even after he worked his arse off. I would have walked out years ago when the Eastwood chants were rolling around.
So under the circumstances who’s left. Big names are not going to come in knowing they are 4th in line and the money wasn’t going to be there since we didn’t sell anyone in the end (except surman and iwellumo). 3 injuries and we would be resorting to youth team players or Ward up front. Something that would be risky in the Championship and would surely have sealed our fate.

Great blog and to be honest I totally agree with you, some of the rubbish I have read last week from some of our fans saying we have no ambition etc…. it’s a complete joke. nearly £40 million spent in 2 seasons for a club which is going to be at the lower end of the division, does that not show ambition.
Bent has been brought into the setup as cover as the 3 we have will be 1sy choice,as Tim states give the lad a chance before you judge him and for heaven’s sake don’t boo him when he makes his debut.

Everybody deserves a chance good luck to the lad fresh slate at Molineux

well said .. at last .. someone with the front to say give the bloke a chance . i too was embarrassed when reading those posts . he s hungry and hes got a point to prove . that is the ethos of the new wolves . It s worked so far. and even if he doesnt find his feet , we now have enough quality around him . These so called critics were the same terrace moaners who used to barrack the likes of jody craddock and countless others . IN MICK WE TRUST . enough said

When the news first broke that we signed him I was a bit disappointed and had the mick taken out of me by my Lulu friend, but I’ve slowly come round to having Bent in the squad now and hopefully he can prove all us doubters wrong. And a good player as Vokes may be, after “that” miss against Man Ure I dont think he’s ready either. If he bangs a few goals in for Bristol when he’s fit again, then we should definatley bring him back for the new year.
With Vokes being out injured aswell, we needed a striker in. Marcus Bent, lets give him a chance, besides, he could be a talisman for us over the coming months…..
you go on about hard work and sweating blood and guts for the cause, Marcus bent is known to offer none of that and also known to be a bit of a renegade in the dressing room add to that he aint done it at premiership level since about 2003/04 for me speaks for its self he coudnt cut it in the championship with boro and qpr either. However you dress this up its a poor signing and he will be back a blues in january. i can guarentee that.

Great early season start to the blog
Unnecessary cliched use of the ‘anticipation was rife in pubs etc bit’in the beginning …unecessarily lazy and not particularly humourous to compensate either
Rest of the article a really balanced and well argued …. a genuinely interesting read.
Good luck with your new role for 2010/11. Looking forward to reading more

Seems to me Tim you are peddling the corporate line. You know as well as everybody the reason Keane didn’t come was a lot more to do with money than Spurs’ trips to Europe. They wanted rid surely that is clear to everybody. Also all this line about the 3M putting personality and character first is nonsense, again it more to do with the colour of money. You are right though we should and I am sure will give Bent are fair chance.I believe the response from fans was aimed at the lack of ambition from the top two at our club.Footballers not bricks.PS I know we have spent £35m on players in the last two seasons but income from Sky alone during that period has been over £60M.
whoever made that facebook page is an embarresment to the club and to him/her self.
He’s had 14 professional clubs to prove his worth. Say’s it all really. Poor signing in my opinion. Would rather have kept Keogh myself.
Worried about the coming season. I just dont believe mick has learnt from last year. No wide right midfield player, no left back of any worth.
Anyway, Mick has a habit of proving me wrong, thankfully!
Only a complete imbecile would start such a group! Call yourself a supporter??

As has been mentioned who else would we have got for 4th choice.
List the number of Premier League strikers that would be happy to sit on the bench behind three other strikers at a lower half club like Wolves. Now list how many of them are any better or more experienced than Bent.
Then you hav the answer to why we signed him. And remember he’s only on loan until January, it’s not as if we’ve signed him on a 3-year deal or anything silly like that.

oh come on guys……….
if mick plays this bad bad player i will never go to the wolves again

In his last 120 appearances since 2006, (32-year-old) Marcus Bent has scored 13 goals. That’s a goal over every (just over) 9 games, at the rate of 3.25 goals a year. So yeah, the response has been “underwhelming” and with good reason, and really all this blog is saying is, “come on, give the lad a fair crack of the whip, he hasn’t played yet.” Whereas most of the people underwhelmed by Bent’s signing are basing it on empirical evidence – “you never know, he MIGHT buck the trend of the last few seasons” isn’t really an argument at all.

Great Blog this week….
Lets be honest we all hope he doesn’t get chance to play, as this will mean the others are injury free and going great guns.
However if he does come on, I’m sure he will get a good reception. His problem will be if he makes a couple of howlers early on, he might as well go home and hang his boots up.
Fingers crossed on all accounts…..

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments.
10 Wolvesfan9 – Yes his repuation does worry me slightly but he’s not here for the money as his wages haven’t changed, so hopefully he wants to prove himself. He could easily have sat in Birmingham’s reserves for the rest of the season.
11 Roynreanie – Criticism duly taken on board!
12 chris hoggard – Completely refute your suggestions Chris. Just because I agree on the whole with the way the three Ms are running the club at the moment does not mean I’m peddling any kind of corporate line. And I doubt very much that Harry Redknapp would have wanted to go into the Champions League with Crouch and Pavlyuchenko as his only fit strikers.
Is this guy any better than Iwelumo, Vokes or Keogh even…?
Obviously we needed another striker but surely there’s no realistic chance of him ousting SEB, Doyle or Fletcher?
The fact it’s only until January tells it’s own story – even Mick isn’t totally convinced.
I agree Bent should be given a chance but his recent statistics are shocking for a striker. He didn’t even score in the Championship when he went out on loan.
At least he can play up front on his own (if all other 3 strikers are injured) or out wide (if we are desperate) so I suppose he’s a good squad player.
I hope he displays a good attitude as I wonder how he’ll take to not playing. This being his 14th club, suggests there’s something wrong somewhere.
I’ll reserve judgement for now but I’ve not spoken to any fan that rates him. In the same way as Tim looks back on Marlon Harewood’s time at the mol with fond memories, I fear he’ll be doing the same with Bent, come the next transfer window.
18 PeteNuts – Yes that’s true, although 41 of those appearances were from the subs bench. Chris Iwelumo scored one goal in his last 36 appearances for Wolves (20 from the bench), at a rate of one goal every 36 games, or 0.5 goals a year. Didn’t see many people lambasting him though, because he gave his full commitment every time he played, won loads of headers and made a nuisance of himself for opposing defenders. If Bent does the same that’ll do fine for me.
And his chances of bucking the trend of the past few seasons will be considerably less if 28,000 Wolves fans get on his back before he has a chance to even play.
I seem to remember a has been we signed a few years back in teh shape of Dean Sturridge, correct me if im wrong bu the seemed to do quite well..
Bent may not get much game time if any, he has shown he’s willing to try a new club, whether it be short or a long spell in order to get his football back on track.
I for one hope he proves all his doubters wrong and does the buisness when called upon.

If you really are a Wolves fan and not a wind-up merchant, then I have to say that I hope Marcus gets a game soon, even if only for 5 minutes. If all our fans abandoned the club every time they disagreed with a signing or team selection, then the ground would be empty.
Tim Spiers – that’s a good blog, well-written and a balanced, thoughtful opinion. Well done, and thanks.
I’m giving him a chance and i hope he does well.
Good luck Bent

I didn’t hear anyone lambasting Iwelumo, mainly because he did the business when it came to helping us win promotion, but I heard a very large number accepting that he couldn’t cut it at this level and acknowledging that shipping him off to Burnley was a good deal. You read these message boards, right?
You’re being melodramatic because it serves your purpose, and I accept that. But 28’000 fans aren’t getting on anyone’s back, there are simply a lot of people expressing their disappointment – on the pitch he will be judged according to performance, and if those performances are good I, and all the other doubters, will be happy to eat our words. My point is that, on the overwhelming weight of recent evidence, we won’t have to. Happy to be wrong, likely to be right.

its a simple case of having a good backup when there is no cash to speand on another player. better than a blank spot. we needed to get rid of the other strikers, so lets just hope that when he plays he does a good job. in mick we trust!!!!

Great blog with some really insightful points…
i agree with the clubs ethos of having players that will give there all for the cause, players like mancienne who want to play for wolves, players like jones who feel at home at the wolves, its true that the signing of bent was never gonna set the world on fire but the reasons behind the signing are sound. id rather bent than some big time charlie who just wants a big weekly pay cheque and whos gonna upset the good thing we got going at th e wolves. in mick we trust!

I doubt we would have signed him had it not been for the fact that Kightly is not going to be available until January at the earliest.
That being the case it makes sense to sign another striker to make up the squad of 25.
If we are going to play two strikers from the start of each game, then I believe we should have two strikers as substitutes.
I can see that there will be some games where he will come on with 10 left to play to relieve one of the first choice strikers.
Bent may just come off the bench and get a crucial late winner or two– and prove his worth as a 4th striker which could count at the end of the season
Report abuse
Robbie Keane according to the Sun was linked with summer moves to Liverpool, Celtic, Man City and Newcastle, so apart from sentiment, what chance had we ever got of getting him back?
As many have pointed out already, this signing is as fourth choice striker and bench warmer. Fletcher – a class signing – cannot walk straight back in and I have said many times already this week that there are a lot of games coming up when we will use a lone striker.
Great start, good signings and wasn’t it great last week to see a local boy getting in the faces of the angelic Barton, Smith and Nolan?
I am sorry but this article is ridiculous. You are asking for Bent to be given a fair chance, and I agree, what could we expect for someone knowing they where coming in as 4th choice.
Yet you undermine your own journalism by claiming that if we had signed Phillips then you would of not given him a fair chance, because you do not like his attitude?!
I am sorry but every time I have seen KP, he has always done his best for the team he is playing for, a good honest pro who knows the game inside out. What do you not like about his attitude?
I know KP has a long serious injury at the moment but last Jan I was hoping we could of signed him as SEB was not firing and we needed that presence in the box.
In short you journalism is under-mind by your own article. Quiet impressive, incompetence I would normally reserve for Fox.
I don’t know what all this hype is about negative or positive , I doubt he will get on the pitch. Not like he will out class our first choice strikers.
We weren’t going to have a £4 million striker 4th in lie was we! Lol
Report abuse
12 Chris Hoggard
How can you suggest the club lacks ambition!
Some of the £60million Sky money pays the wages of the £35million signings we’ve made. If you read the last set of accounts for the clube you will see they relied on Steve Morgan’s money.
Got a sneaky feeling we were either in for someone but the deal collapsed so we’ve had to sign Bent to make the numbers up, or, we’ve got the green light on someone but will have to wait till Jan to get him onboard! Signing a 32 year old striker who’s hardly played for the past 12 months for an average prem side on a 3 month loan just doesn’t make sense unless he’s either a fall back option or a stop gap to cover injuries or suspensions. Anyway with the fixtures we’ve got coming up soon we’re more than likely to revert to 4-5-1 and he will be lucky to make the bench, but if he does get on the pitch he should at the least expect the backing and support of all wolves fans as long as he gives his all!
23 sydneywolf – great shout on Dean Sturridge. He only cost us about £300k, what a bargain.
26 PeteNuts – Apologies for the melodrama, it’s just in my nature when it comes to talking about the Wolves! My point is that you’re already prejudging him on his goalscoring record alone before he’s kicked a ball for us and if everyone had the same attitude then what chance has the guy got? Cut him some slack, get behind him and let’s see what he can do.
34 J – If Phillips signed for Wolves he’d get my support, doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion on which players I wouldn’t like to see play for us. My problem with his attitude stems from when he gave the North Bank an ‘up yours’ salute after scoring against us for the Baggies a few years ago. Might have been out of character in fairness.
J – Good point about KP. I was going to say the same. KP’s attitude has been to get under the skin of the opposition (not unlike most Wolves players against Barton last Saturday)and score goals. Just the sort of thing we would want from a striker, I’d say.
Tim – You’re confusing two things. We all agree that the campaign against Bent is ridiculous and if he gets on the field, he deserves to be supported.
But that is a separate issue from whether Bent is a good signing or not. Apart from the fact that he had success with Everton 5 years ago, we need another stiker and he’s a potential target man, nothing I have read makes me think that he’ll be any better than Maierhofer.
And do we think he was given a fair chance? Yes he shot his mouth off but then he had grounds to do so and I interpreted that as a desire to play rather than moaning for the sake of it!
When he arrived he said all the right things and every time I saw him when he was on the bench, he appeared to support the team and wanted to give his best on the limited occasions he actually played.
He was clearly overpriced and it was a “rush signing” but I can’t help feeling that with a bit more support from above he could have had the role that Bent will fulfil and could have been a lot more effective.
Agreed with your blog. But I have to im not 100% convinced Bent meets the ethos of the club, hard working, not in it for the money and unlikely to upset the applecart which you talked about.
He is happy to come sit on the bench at another club, always on loan because he probably has a high salary to command a transfer! As for his old footballer wife girlfriends, doesn’t strike me as a person which will fit personality of our other players.
I think he is in it for the money personally, but I think Harewood is too. So if the only thing Bent does is come off the bench and change a game to get us 3 points I wont complain. Good luck to him and UTW!!
Tim, I feel we are singing from the different sides of the same hymnsheet, but that, where your attitude is “he is Wolves, therefore we must give him a chance”, mine / that of his other sceptics is “he must earn the right to wear the shirt and we’re not sure he has the chops to do it.” But if he comes good, I will be cheering as lustily as everyone else, and only later, in the warm and loving embrace of the Newhampton, will I think, “on reflection, it turns out that the stuff I said on Tim Spiers’ blog is wrong. Hey-ho.”
I disagree about Harewood, to a certain extent too. I mean, the man IS a tryer. He’s just not very good (unless you’re Wigan, in which case he becomes Thierry Henry).
41 PeteNuts – Yep you’ve summed it up about right there. And I’ll happily join you in the Newhampton to castigate him if he shows absolutely no desire and can’t hit a cow’s backside with the proverbial banjo.

Everyone deserves a chance to play in the Premier – agreed.
However that also has applied to Surman, The Hoff, Milijas, Keogh, Iwelumo, Elokobi, Hennessey, Bia, Halford, Stearman, Edwards, Mancienne …….and now apparantly Marcus Bent.
Van Damme is currently being given a chance however I predict he will not be a first choice when Hunt is fit.
You get what you pay for – Doyle, Fletcher, Hunt, Zubar.
Mick is up with the best at motivation, hard-to-beat etc and I am sure he will keep us up again.
But please Mick – don’t sign any more bench/squad players. Only sign a player if he is better than Jarvis, Berra, Henry, Jones etc.

You make a good case, Tim. However, the point that we shouldn’t rush to judgement on a player until he’s worn the gold and black just doesn’t stand up! When a player is 32, his record speaks for itself and Bent’s goal to game ratio is not impressive. There are also countless recent examples [not in Mick's day, I hasten to add ] of us signing players who the fans KNEW wouldn’t perform….Robert Taylor, Luzny spring immediately to mind.
But my criticism of the signing goes deeper….with 3 excellent proven strikers already in the squad, surely this is an ideal scenario for regarding one of the youngsters , Winnal or Hemmings as striker no4.
As we know, Mick has brought some fine talent to the Club, but how many home-grown youngsters has he blooded? If these boys never get a first team chance only one thing will happen, they will stagnate. Not playing them because they are not good enough becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Look closer to home, Mick…there’s meat in the larder, don’t go down Tesco’s, specially not Tesco’s !!!!!

I agree with most, realistically what players were going to come to Wolves knowing that they would be keeping the bench warm? Not only does the author of that facebook group want to have their Season ticket took off them, but also every member who has joined.
