Wayne Hennessey rooting for Baggies ace

Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey today insisted he will back Albion’s Boaz Myhill – even though the latter is his rival for a place for Wales.

Both are in the unusual position of vying for the No.1 spot despite not being first choice at their clubs as Wales kick off their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign against Montenegro tomorrow.

“Neither of us are playing week in, week out in the Premier League and now we just wait until the gaffer lets us know which one is playing,” he said.

“We’ve not had any indication – you never do as a goalkeeper and it’s just a case of waiting to see – but hopefully whoever plays, plays well.

“There’s a nice rivalry now with us both at rival clubs, but we aren’t playing at the moment which isn’t a good thing.

“Boaz is probably one of my best friends so if he gets the nod and does well I’ll be pleased for him.

“Whoever’s playing, I want Wales to qualify, so I hope he does a good job if he’s selected.”

At 23 – Myhill is 27 – Hennessey insists time is on their side as Toshack’s young guns prepare for another tough campaign.

“I’m nowhere near my prime yet, I’m still a youngster, a baby as they say,” he said. “Goalkeepers hit their prime when they’re 30 but I’m only 23.”

Hennessey knows all about Montenegro, having played there in a 2-1 friendly defeat last August.

“It’s a tough game but we want to get off to a good start,” he added.

“It’s not a trip into the unknown, people say they’re the worst team in our group, but they’re a very good side.

“We’ve always had good players, injuries have been our downfall, but it hasn’t happened to us so much this time, so it’s about time fortune was on our side.”

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
