Paul Scharner relishes midfield challenge
Thursday 2nd September 2010, 11:29AM BST.
New-boy Paul Scharner today revealed the chance to prove himself as a central midfielder convinced him to join Albion.
The Austrian is adamant midfield is his strongest position and became frustrated with being used constantly in central defence during his time with Wigan.
And the 30-year-old is now relishing the challenge at The Hawthorns after gaining assurances from Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo that he will be used in midfield.
Outlining his reasons for joining Albion on a free transfer, Scharner said: “First of all they gave me the chance to play in midfield.
“Secondly they want to keep possession and play a really good style of football, and thirdly I want to help West Brom to stay in the Premier League.
“Now it is down to me. I have been signed as a midfielder and I want to show everybody that that is my best position and I am looking forward to getting started.
“The manager signed me as a central midfielder and that’s one of the reasons why I signed for West Bromwich, because I want to take a chance to show everybody this is my position.
“The club and the manager took a lot of time working on the transfer and told me that they wanted to sign me. It was an absolute pleasure to sign for West Bromwich Albion.”
Scharner trained for the first time with his new team-mates yesterday and admitted he had missed the dressing room atmosphere since deciding to leave the Latics at the end of last season.
And he revealed the Baggies’ style of play also helped convince him to make the move.
“I saw just one game, against Liverpool, and the lads did really well,” he said.
“That was an undeserved defeat and I think there is a lot of potential here. I am sure we can stay up.
“The style of play is beautiful and that’s what I am looking for in a team.
“I like to be in a team that wants to play football and that’s what I have missed in the last couple of years.
“I played my last game on May 9 for Wigan and I am looking forward to settling in the team and having some of the team atmosphere.”

I suppose with James Morrison’s suspension Paul Scharner will play in his central midfield position for the next three games . With Scharners arrival and the signing of Tchoyi RDM seems to be acknowledging that you need some big blokes to survive in the Premier League. It was only about 3 weeks ago that we were all concerned about the strength of the squad but we now seem well covered in all positions. My only disappointment is that this weekend there is yet another international break which robs us of live football. After that good performance at Liverpool the last thing we wanted was a disruption to our league programme , and there’s another one in October.

1. Joining us for all the right reasons? He already has a get-out clause if one of seven clubs come in for him? He was awful for Wigan last season and they released him, we need better players not Blackburn/Wigan rejects, lets hope that this is addressed in January.

What a nice headache for Roberto to have such riches at his disposal and we are not up to our necks in debt regardless of what happens this season. These new players see a BIG club with great facilities and they say so.
Dan Abnormal: I hope your quiet word with Matt works. The match is OUR social occasion, we meet the same folks each week due to seating and we can’t move around. We need to greet each other, chat, express opinions like on these boards, sing, cheer. I sincerely hope we can reach a compromise. Announcements need to be clear and strong, but background needs to be just that, BACKGROUND. Thanks for acting as mediator.

How would this squad stand up to the great years under Atkinson player for player?

When Scharner says we play beautiful football, you realise the man has vision and intelligence.Anyone that disagrees, which probably means almost everyone in wulferhampton, should tell him to his face.Just be warned,at 6′ 4”,and with a reputation of being hard as nails,I would advise wearing a tin hat and body armour if you do approach him, best not to take any chances.I have heard he makes Vinny Jones look like Bridget Jones in comparison.

Robin No.6. One positive we get from the International break is that our new boys get to train under our coaches and learn who the rest of the squad are.
Nah, I’m kidding myself. It’s too long before the Spurs game innit? Then there’s the England team. Wife-swapping, night-clubbing, can’t make the next game, I’ve split a fingernail on me girlfriend’s face, well, somebody’s girl friend’s face. And the she-devil hit me back!
At least we have 3 home games in a row. It ain’t all bad.

Re: Facebook and the subject of Luke Moore on the other thread.
Somebody did set up a Facebook page called ‘Please no Moore’ about 6/7 months ago and circulated the link to around 4,000 Albion fans through the West Brom Supporters group.
I didn’t think it was particularly appropriate to send a negative link to fans, especially whilst he a) still played for us; b) was on Facebook himself; and c) we were in the midst of our most successful season ever, so sent a message to the bloke saying just that.
I ended up engaging with him, and within about an hour, this bloke said he’d had to remove himself from the group and was about to take himself off Facebook because of the negative response from fellow Baggies telling him to get off Moore’s back while he remains an Albion player no matter what they thought of him.
I wonder if the same happens to whoever set up the Marcus Bent group or if it will be seen as acceptable……

This squad would probably beat them. Not because they’re better players but because that team had a c**p manager.

First thing is. Is this get out clause a fact or a bit of imaginative journalism?
Second. He’s reputedly on £30,000 a week, so in the event of us going down I’m sure the club would be only to glad to release him from his contract.
