Derby keen on Chris Wood loan deal
Thursday 2nd September 2010, 11:51AM BST.
Albion teenager Chris Wood could join Derby on loan once the Baggies’ injury problems clear up.
Rams manager Nigel Clough today confirmed talks with Albion over a temporary switch to Pride Park for the 18-year-old New Zealand international.
But no move can take place until the loan window opens on September 9 and Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo would want Ishmael Miller (thigh) and Roman Bednar (Achilles) to prove their fitness before allowing Wood to leave.
“We are looking to go straight back into the loan market when it opens again,” said manager Nigel Clough.
“We were very close to getting somebody in on loan.
“We had agreed the move and we will revisit that one. We will also chase up a few other inquiries once the window opens.
“We got quite a way down the road with West Brom and with Chris (Wood) as well — and we hope that as soon as West Brom’s injuries clear up, we will be able to get him in.
“I think he fits the mould of the younger players we have. He is inexperienced but he has played international football.
“It is a pattern we are trying to follow of young, hungrier players.”
Wood has travelled to both of Albion’s away Premier League matches this season and figured as a substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Liverpool.
But he is sixth in the pecking order behind Marc-Antoine Fortune, Peter Odemwingie, Bednar, Miller and Simon Cox in the battle for forward places.

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
