Michael Kightly out of Wolves squad

Michael Kightly out of Wolves squad

Michael Kightly was the shock omission today as Wolves revealed their 25-man Premier League squad.

Kightly has suffered a further setback in his bid to recover from knee injuries and has been left off boss Mick McCarthy’s list ahead of today’s 5pm deadline.

The grim news means the winger cannot play in the Premier League until January at the earliest.

It is the latest blow for the 24-year-old, who thought he had won his battle to recover from chronic inflammation of the patella tendons in both knees.

But the former England under-21 international broke down when he rejoined full training with his team-mates at the end of last week.

McCarthy explained: “He hasn’t played since last November and it would be very difficult to go straight back into the Premier League.

“So when he’s ready, we’ll discuss the possibility of going out on loan, which he can do before we can revise the squad in January.”

Head of medical Steve Kemp added: “This is a very complex injury. It’s not a major setback, it’s expected from this type of rehab.

“Rather than trying to get him back to Premier League football in a certain timespan, the gaffer has decided to take the pressure off by leaving him out for now.”

Kightly’s place has gone to Marcus Bent, signed on loan from Birmingham yesterday until January.

Matt Hill, who can be loaned to a Football League club, is the only other omission from the squad.

Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, who is expected to be fit in two weeks after a thigh injury, does not need to be named in the 25 as he is under 21.

Thirty-two-year-old Bent is looking to use all his experience to aid Wolves.

He said: “I’m sure the boys will teach me some stuff and I hope I can teach them some.”

Seems sensible with Kites. Be like a new signing in Jan.

Think this is news we all kind of expected…

Going out on loan to a Championship team will really tell us if he is going to get back to the kind of player he was a couple of years ago… My guess is that he will struggle to get back to they way he was… Lucky Jarvis has stepped up to the plate, he’s been possibly the most impressive player of the season so far…

Gutted for Kites but keeping the pressure off him and sending him on loan is the best thing to do. Every club in the Championship will be fighting to get him on loan for a few months and once fully fit he is a fantastic player hence the reason Man Utd tried to poach him just after we signed him, the lad is a class act.

Still don’t know why it takes so long for players to regain fitness at wolves.

With so many injuries already within the squad, i feel a little worried for the coming few months.

Does anyone know of a Wolves site that is sensible, informed and not melodramatic ?

Kightly – good decision, if he’s fit in January then he can fit back in when Bent goes. Its not like we’ve not grown used to being without him, so lets wait it out.

On Marcus Bent, all of a sudden his signing doesn’t look so bad for a fourth choice striker / someone with the speed to play out wide.

Gutting news but it’s for the best the just needs time he wont retire its a big injury that takes time take a look at Hargreaves both very young players that will make full recovery I’m sure. Need Hunt to come good now and stay fit. Not sure about this Bent deal time will tell I suppose.

Wolves need to think a bit out of the box if they are going to get to the bottom of this mystifying injury. They need to look closely at lifestyle and diet, and even look at options like acupuncture to stop the inflammatory reaction in the body. It seems clear that conventional treatment is just not working so it is time to try something else.

This is the sensible thing to do. Hunt will be hopefully be back in about a month and there are a fair few games soon that we will have to revert to a 4-5-1 formation – due to standard of opposition – and that will mean Mancienne having to play and also to accomodate Doyle or Fletcher, we might have to employ them as part of a midfield 5.
A very good start to the season and I for one love the way the likes of Henry is getting stuck into the likes of Barton, Smith, Nolan and Cahill. None of these players are whiter than white. I cannot see Wolves lying down and surrendering like Albion or Villa, for example!

This 25 man rule is not fair on injured players, it pushes them away from the club, for more months than is needed. I would make it a 30 man squad and ask for more english players within each team that actually plays.

It does not help players, it pushes them down the leagues, if they cannot get a place. Also when a player reaches 22 if he has not really made it, his chance is over, how unfair is that. Some players do not mature till after 21.

I would not of put Ikeme in the 25 man squad, as he can go out on loan. Instead we should have looked for an under 21 Goalkeeper to cover. Which would of given Kightly a fair chance with the team he plays for.

Not the best news to hear expecially with the recent news about Matt Murray. However for all the doom and gloom merchants that think he’ll have to retire, there are several high profile players that have had a season or two out of the game and then gone on to have successful careers. Players like Van Der Vaart, Alan smith, Djibril Cisse, Michael Essien.

I think it’s a good move by the club! Also Hunt should be back in around 6-7weeks, plus Mujungi started to find his feet at the end of last season, and McCarthy has obviously seen something in him to get him back for a second season. So it’s not all doom and gloom!

The news on Kightly puts the signing of Marcus Bent in perspective.
As Kightly is not going to be available until January, Wolves might as well sign someone like Bent to make up the 25 irrespective whether he plays or not.

To be honest, I agree this is not good news for the man himself or for the fans that watched him those first couple of seasons after he signed. We all saw some awesome displays.

Having said that, he hasn’t realy featured for Wolves for well over a year and correct me if I’m wrong, didn’t play at all last season.

I’d love to see him playing again and if he’s fit come January then I think going out on loan is probably gonna be the best for him to build up his match fitness.

I’d be a lot more concerned right now if Jarvo got injured. From what I’ve seen of him so far this season, he is the man.

Kightly may well have an injury which prevents him ever being fully fit and regardless of what medical chief Kemp may say, these type of injuries take their toll on players.
Hopefully Kightly will return in the near future but the longer it goes on, the more unlikely it will be that he plays top level football again.

    A very sensible decision.
Kightly has a habit of coming back half fit and ending up worse each time. This has taken away the pressure and made sure he knows that his role at the club is to get 100% fit before he kicks a ball in anger.
Had Mick put him in the 25 man squad it would have placed an extra burden on the lad, physically and mentally, to make an early return.
I applaud a sensible decision and am not going to read anything else into it. I certainly don’t think it means Kightly’s career is over just yet.

With more respect than some hereon, I think that most people’s problem with your orignal post was the rather self-important “I know more than you but I’m not telling” subtext (well, it wasn’t even a subtext, it was just a text) of it. If you’re making what purports to be a definitive statement and then qualifying it with a phrase like “for obvious reasons i cannot divulge how i know” then I’m afraid you can’t be surprised if a few people jump down your throat.

How do I know the above is true? A little bird told me…

Currently we have very little fit cover for the right wing spot.We should have signed another wideman especially given Kightly’s injury problems.Anyone who thinks differently are putting bias ahead of rationality.Jarvis is better on the left,as witnessed by his improved perfomances when switched from right to left against Everton and Newcastle,He did well on the right against Stoke, but he was up against a very slow full back.ALSO MR SWAIN,if you check your facts I think you will find Matt Murray spent a large part of his upbringing in Leomansley Lichfield.

If Kightly comes back after such a long spell off he has to prove himself both as the player he was and batter – as a Premiership player. Both these facts together don’t bode well, i really hope he gets through this in the long run..Knowing this as Wolves would have done before the transfer deadline I think the decision to only bring in an unproven Marcus Bent was woeful. If Jarvis gets injured we are very narrow and will lack creativity. Without Hunt we are very one-sided in our attacking play at present.

Everyone needs to calm down here. Firstly, most teams do not play two out and out wingers every game. Secondly, in the next 9 games we have to play the likes of Spurs, Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd and Arsenal, and that means we will play a 4-5-1 formation and one of our spare forwards will either have to play wide or in the gap behind a lone striker!
