Wolves looking for a striker
Monday 30th August 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Wolves today confirmed they are trying to bring in a striker before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow.
Chief executive Jez Moxey is remaining tight-lipped on targets but distanced the club from speculation linking free agent Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Villa’s Emile Heskey.
“It’s a ‘no’ on those two,” said Moxey. “There probably won’t be any developments until tomorrow, if anything at all. But we’re still working on a possible incoming deal.”
Manager Mick McCarthy wants to add a fourth attacker following the departure of Andy Keogh on a season-long loan to Cardiff.
McCarthy has found recruiting an extra striker something of a ‘catch 22′ situation. Big clubs insist any young stars loaned out are playing, which Wolves cannot guarantee with Kevin Doyle, Steven Fletcher and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake ahead of them, while more experienced forwards are reluctant to sit on the bench.
Wolves’ hands are otherwise tied as Sam Vokes, who is injured for two months anyway, is on loan at Bristol City until January and Stefan Maierhofer, who scored two at the weekend for MSV Duisburg, and Keogh, are on loan for the season.
Meanwhile, Moxey said there had been no official confirmation that Matt Jarvis was included in Fabio Capello’s provisional 30-man England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland, as was reported at the weekend.

No doubt were looking at a decent striker from the championship cause mick wont be looking for a big name to go ahead of doyle and fletch and with ebanks in top form aswell he will be looking for a striker to sit on the bench to play when he is needed!
Be good to see who comes in though but im 100% sure that the striker will be our last signing cant see to much happening for us tomorrow apart from the striker situation.
As for venegoor and heskey i wouldnt take venegoor he wasnt to good for hull last season and they have even realeased him that says a lot dont it but i remember hull away and he didnt look to bad he is a big lad and has a lot of power as for heskey i would take him he would be super sub but mick dont want him so thats that.

looks like robbie Keane is coming to the wolves by all accounts, provided harry gets his man into spurs
Report abuse
KAKA please!
If were looking for a striker I think we should try to buy that Grant Holt from Norwich. He certainly knows where the back of the net is!!
If we do not find a striker, give young Sam Winnall a run. He played so well against Southend!
Get Keano, end of problem.
A bit surprised that they would be looking for an additional stiker at this moment in time.
Surely it would be better to wait until January and re-assess the situation.
If they are going to bring someone in I hope it’s a young and hungry non-league player who maybe successful but won’t cost the earth if he fails.
Not Heskey please,he`s useless. But you say you want a goalscorer Mick so we`re safe it can`t be Heskey. Not Kitson either.Keane,yes,Venegoor,yes.Agree with No.1.as well, bring in Lescott cos he aint gonna last at city.

I’d b happy wiv Keane, Vela, Sturridge or Santa Cruz. Cud get at least one of these on loan…
Report abuse
tom: why would you want heskey you absolute idiot!

If Keane comes I will happily eat my hat. Spurs can’t buy, need a bigger squad for the Champions League and can afford to keep him now they ahve qualified, and (as discussed endlessly) we can’t afford his wages. We are looking for a decent (not outstanding) striker with some power and pace as an option to our two highly skillful strikers and penalty box finisher. Preferably someone who has experience as he will spend a lot of time on the bench but will come on and do a job. Above all someone who is actually available as opposed to all the suggestions we get on here. This all points to Jason Roberts.

Milijas to go before tomorrows deadline ?.

If the famous WWFC sign Emile Heskey, I will withdraw my support for the club.
He is the stand out player of a generation (apart from Titus Bramble) who should never have been given a professional football contract!!
Don’t go near him, he is a cart-hoss (in ice skates) of the highest order. (Let Albion have him!)

I’ll bare my bottom on town hall steps if Robbie came back !
I’d also jig a dance of delight at half time on pitch if we got him :-)
TBH I cannot see it being a big name player we’d like to see but as long as whoever fits in the workman like team ethos i’d be happy.

Robbie Keane is still uncommitted- whats wrong with you McCarthy ?
If we miss out on a signing- consider every day why we have sold ‘Bog chris’ and loaned out Volkes and Keogh- all three good backup to the squad we have.
Lets all pray

problem is, who would be prepared to be fourth choice striker?? rumours that the striker may be caleb folan from hull god help us if this is true
Report abuse
NO 10 If Moxey is after a Sturridge it will only be Deano, somebody on the cheap. We only had one shot on target in 90 minutes at home on Saturday. It should be obvious to everybody that we need more players, especially if Kightly and Hunt are not ready for a while.I appreciate it is not easy to always get it right in the transfer market, but we saw a classic example on Saturday on how being cautious can actually cost you money.12 months ago Ashley was looking to cash in at Newcastle.Mick fancied Carroll,in the circumstances it is hard to believe Newcastle would have been able to resist a bid of £4m.But that would have been too much for budget concious Jez Moxey. And we end up wasting £2M on Maierhofer. In my opinion we have got it right since then in buying Fletcher, but that cost us an extra £6M.
Err….am I missing something here? Keogh has gone to Cardiff who are only paying £10,000 of his reported £22,000 a week wages. So we are paying £12,000 a week for nothing plus now Mick wants to bring in a 4th striker who will be behind Doyle, Fletcher and Ebanks-Blake!!! Why didn’t we just keep Keogh as the 4th striker? After all who wants to come here as 4th choice? And of course we will also have to pay their wages on top of what we already pay Keogh!!
danny wellbeck currently on loan at sunderland, worth a shout for 5 million, chopra,, sam baldock, or aaron mclean all young ,fast, and quality front men.
oh and this is for jack the hat and terry baggie, you parked the team bus at anfield and still lost , oops boinging back down to the fizzy pop league i see, lol. utw
Report abuse
Matty fryatt – local lad and would give 100% as a 4th choice striker + is young.
Stoke are going for Eidur Gudjohnsen and Newcastle for Robbie Keane, surely we should be competing with these teams!
There is no way Keane is going to come and sit on the bench!so that means leaving a striker out??,no way, it aint gonna happen plus his wages?forget it.Its going to be a striker from lower league.
Kyle Laffety ? Mick was very keen to bring him in once before so he maybe the target man he wants. Id like to see Jolean Lescott in on a season long loan with a view to signing him if we stay up, that way Joe can see how things work out for himself and for Wolves too,if it doesn’t, he’s lost nothing and can go back to MC or move on elsewhere. Im sure Man City would be willing to pay a large chunk of his wages, and we could use the £3M allocated for a striker towards his wages,as i think Joe just might come back having family in the area too?. As for Robbie Keane i dont think that will ever happen, we’ve had chances before to bring him in and not bothered so it a dead duck that one, plus Robbie wouldn’t sit on the bench for anybody again. And MM has said he will be playing 4.5.1 in alot of games so why do we need 4 Top Strikers when 3 will be sitting on the bench moaning behind MM back?. But i deffo take big Jolean back in a flash. UTW
Report abuse
To all these fans saying bring in Keano. Do you really think he would want to come back here and sit on the bench ? Face it, with what we have at the moment he would be sat on the bench !!
I will add I’d love him to come back but I just can’t see it
Report abuse
Do we really need Robbie Keane?
I reckon there are a few mire clubs he supported as a kid, that he still hasn’t played for yet?
Do we need to pay tens of thousands each week, for him to sir on the bench?
You are all in dream land !!!!
2 and 9 I am with you on this no Heskey please
Report abuse
Some wishful thinking going on here ay there? Anyway, we’ve got Sam Winnall and Ashley Hemmings. They’ve got to be blooded some time! Then get Vokes back in January.
Two more goals against Swindon on Saturday, for goodness sake Mick, Go Get Sammy Baldock from MK Dons. Just 21 and 4 goals in 4 games already this season, grab him while is is affordable, the crowd will love him.
We need some quality, especially now as we are going to be targeted by national media and referees as supposed bully boys. Don’t understand why we can play good football one minute as against Stoke, then find it necessary to hit high ball as against Everton and Newcastle. We need more pace in the side.
10- I believe that Santa Cruz is injured so we dont really want him, Keane would be good, as he aint getting a game at Tot, but who would you drop?
We were linked with Dave Kitson who we could pick up for £3m and he could work well as cover, plus he has played with Doyle and Hunt before.
there is also Felipe Caicedo, whos worth a shout
Report abuse
Keane supposed to be going to Newcastle according to 5live this am. Wages £65 grand a week could be why not Wolves!!!!!!
No chance of Berra going out on loan I suppose?
so far we have been linked with:
Dave Kitson £3m
Denni Avdic £2m
Gylfi Sigurdsson £3m
Robbie Keane (loan)
Stefano Okaka £2m
Dont forget though, we are just looking for cover encase of injury’s, so we need someone that doesn’t mind coming on in the last 10-20 minutes or sitting on the bench for a few games.
Ideally we need someone with a proven record in the Prem at finding the back of the net, plus someone different to what we already have.
we also have loans to look at, luckily we seem to be scoring more freely than last year, if Fletcher, EB and Doyle can all get 10 and we get a few from Jones, Milijas and Jarvis then I think we should be okay, especially if we get someone that can maybe score 5
Report abuse
Super Kev would be a good choice throw hin on for the last 30 minutes when are drawing and he would be lethal
Report abuse
Please not Venegoor he’s no better than Vokes or Keogh! Love to bring Robbie back home but no chance with his salary. Otherwise a young, developmental player like Lambert from Southampton or Mackail Smith from Posh to learn from our lads makes sense.
Bring Robie Keane home!!
Can’t see keano coming as we won’t match his wages but would be a dream if he did.
Lescott and Santa Cruz?.. might as well get robinho and Given whilst were raiding Man City!
There is little probability that we will look at people like Heskey, Santa Cruz. Why bother when we cannot afford their wages and they don’t score enough goals in any event!!! Both of these guys are overrated and spend too much time being injured.
Our problem is going to be in central midfield by the time this campaign really gets going. We lack true creativity to provide the forwards with defence splitting passes – its clearly obvious from our last two games. Without the right player we will lose the ball and our defence will be put under severe pressure in one too many games. Milijas , for whatever reason, is not being given an extended run to see if he can deliver for the team. If he is not capable of doing the business why not get rid of him and bring in someone else?
Kenny Miller?? dont no if possible thou
Report abuse
I can’t fathom why he loaned out 3 strikers and now we need to buy one. Vokes was looking good enough to break through this season and would of been a great no 4 striker. Now (as Mick said) the quality of who we get in won’t be that good due to them knowing they’ll be warming the bench. Maybe they’ll have to go with an aged striker who couldn’t go a full 90 anyway (who would take up a valuable spot in the 25). Or a young bloke with potential, like a poor version of Vokes!
Only Robbie…ahead of our TRIO.
please stop dreaming! we aint gona get keano back, not yet anyway!would love it if it was! i agree it will more than likely be a championship or lower league player which for me is pointless as we could have saved our selves the bother and kept keogh as he would have done a job warming the bench! cant see it being a proven premier league striker but please Mick feel free to prove me wrong
up the wolves.

I hear that Jo from Man City is coming on a seasons loan?
It will one of either
Lafferty
Kitson
Dindane
Forget Keane he will be at West Ham & is not the sort of striker we need.
If we get anyone in, it will be as fourth choice striker. SEB is not going to get dropped at present and then we have Doyle and Fletcher battling it out for the other spot and both are class. There are going to be a few games before the January window where we definitely be using Mancienne and playing a 4-5-1 and someone like Fletcher or Doyle may play as part of a midfield 5.
Oh joy. I hear we are being linked with Marcus Bent. How wonderful!
I’m hearing Marcus Bent is going to Wolves on loan. Just have to wait and see if what I hear is true
Report abuse
I would go for Lafferty or Dindane as both can play on the wing if needed which is a boost because Kightly & Hunt are are still injured
Report abuse
Word is it could be Dave Nugent from pompey
Report abuse
It’s Marcus Bent on loan from Brum!!!
Oh my god what a complete waste of time – Keogh, Iwelumo & Vokes are all better than this donkey

I’m hearing Marcus Bent is going to Wolves on loan. Just have to wait and see if what I hear is true.
