Liverpool 1 Albion 0

Sunday 29th August 2010, 5:12PM BST.

Fernando Torres broke the hearts of 10-man Albion as he scored the only goal to give Liverpool victory at Anfield.

The Spaniard struck on 65 minutes to break the Baggies’ spirited resistance.

And Albion had James Morrison sent off on 86 for a poor tackle on Torres.

Albion held their own for much of the first half, withstanding spells of Liverpool pressure and creating a couple of half-chances for themselves.

Returning striker Marc-Antoine had two opportunities but he snatched at the first shot and sent it well wide before connecting tamely with the second and hitting it straight at keeper Pepe Reina.

But there were opportunities for the hosts too with Fernando Torres firing a shot too close to Scott Carson before Gabriel Tamas produced a strong tackle to block a Torres shot.

The Baggies continued to press after the interval and they carved out a chance on 65 minutes when Fortune and Peter Odemwingie combined on the left to tee up Gonzalo at the far post but his shot was held by Pepe Reina.

And Liverpool broke away immediately to grab the winner, Torres feeding Dirk Kuyt and collecting the return pass before volleying past Scott Carson.

Morrison was given his marching orders four minutes from the end when he caught Torres with a high tackle which was clumsy but not malicious.

Wolves are better at parking the bus than WBA to be fair, and to think they were all buzzed about beating the worst away team in the prem, who wolves beat when they had a full side.

Think the real test will come for wba will be Tottenham, like 1 said, wolves beat twice.

Last season your 2-0 defeat at Liverpool was considered to be a good result against a quality team, but when we lose 1-0 in a battling performance, we are parking the bus against a rubbish side! Jog on and come back when you have actually played a decent team this season.

Another weak report,Why do you bother?. Brilliant display of attacking football by our courageous team. Yet again we didn’t have a bad player on the park. At least Morrisons
was a late tackle not a vicious studs first like that maniac wolves captain, ask Joey Barton. Keep on playing like that ALBION and we will definitely stay up. Thanks for a great game,

Liverpool could only play as well as they were allowed No.2 which wasn’t very good. Had we been given the certain penalty in the first half, it may well have been a different end too. We certainly did not deserve to lose. I watched it on the computer and was impressed with us overall, other than finishing.

I was absolutely delighted to see Scott Carson back in the England squad. I thought that 1st Chelsea goal might upset him and Capello, but remember, ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’. Also, no one has commented on Jonas. He was, a couple of minor blemishes apart, superb. Fortuné put himself about well enough and I think the new arrangement might work against lesser teams than Liddypol, but I still preferred Peter Odemgoldenslippers in the middle. Those 1/2 chances could have been a goal, for whatever
other attributes Marc Antoin has, quick feet he ain’t got. And I don’t mean running speed.
It’s the difference between a ‘striker’ and a ‘playmaker’. We should appeal against the Morrison red card. The linesman gave that decision. There was no malice, just badly timed. It was a ‘crowd pleaser’ in the same way we didn’t get a penalty up the Kop end.
I watched the highlights of the Wulfie/Newcastle game. That could have been ‘X’ rated and over 18s only for tackling.
Delighted to see Joey Barton get his come-uppance though.

Why all the fuss about the Pakistan match fixing. They’ve been doing it at Anfield for 40 years now. Like the NOTW we have the video evidence of the man with the whistle fixing it for the Mr Bigs at PL headquarters.

Perhaps if we’d had that ref who gave the penalty against Blues last week his young eyes might have spotted one of the numerous WWF bouts of wrestling in the Liverpool penalty area. Perhaps not.

We had 13 shots in total with 6 on target. Watch football focus for a fair reflection of our play – we dominated for 70 minutes and, if it wasn’t for a sublime Reina throw, would have had our well-earned points.

It’s funny the Dingles can’t praise anyone but themselves – we played very well away at Anfield and were unlucky to come away empty-handed. You kicked your way to a point at home versus a newly promoted side. I know which I prefer!

its funny how you only notice Wolves fans who criticise your team. Newcastle are a big strong team. (who by the way we should have had a certain pen against when 1-0 up) i think this was probably the best time to play a Liverpool team, and where is it we deserve to be in your opinion. it doesnt matter how well you play football is about scoring goals. you didnt Liverpool did therefore you lose, understand or do you want a picture. both Wolves and Albion have fans on here that talk crap but i dont tar every Baggies fan with the same brush. you have a good chance to get some points against Spurs and Blues. i for one hope you do stay in the prem.Let’s show this league what a proper derby is about.

Fortune was the best Albion player on the pitch which is why we played so well as any

and it sounded like you are a team full of

Wolves have beaten 2 dross sides who are both

I watched virtually all the match at Liverpool. The BBC so-called ‘highlights’ was a disgraceful, unbalanced, biased, prejudiced load of rubbish (note, not one swear word). The statistics showed we had 53% possession and more shots on goal, yet you saw next to nothing of that. And an uglier set of ‘presenters’ on BBC2 you’d search a while for.

Unlucky baggies but what a good insight into our midfield. Mulumbo, Brunt, Dorrens, Morrison(apart from red card) I thought used the width of the pitch well. St Pete started running at them in the 2nd half and could see the confidence growing.

I’m very happy with that performance!

PS: Fortune held the ball up well and maybe if he run a little more could prove a very good signing for us.

If you actually went to any games with any regularity, you would surely have, at some point in the past, watched highlights of the game you went to and seen just how different editing can make a game look.

I don’t have any actual statistics to hand, but Albion had pretty much the same corner/posession/shots count as Liverpool, but of course Liverpool had the stat that really counts! Thats football mate, if i were you, i’d wise-up and don’t believe everything you see or hear in the media.

IMO Torres was the only real difference between the 2 teams. He took his chance well but then he’s a world cup winner so I’m not surprised he scored.

Wolves fans – The Albion played Newcastle 3 times last season drawing 1-1, 2-2 and beating them 4-2 !

You haven’t played a decent team yet but your arrogance is amusing. You spent millions more than any other club in the Championship with the tax exiles hidden money, yet were still pipped to the Premiership by a cash-strapped Albion, who have been in the premiership for more seasons than you.

i think we played plenty of decent teams last season and finished comfortably 7 points clear of the relegation zone.
