Wolves strikeforce is the real deal, says Mick McCarthy

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy greeted his three-strong strikeforce being fully fit for the first time this season today by declaring “They’re as good as anyone outside the European places”.

McCarthy had £7m record buy Steven Fletcher fit again after missing the last two games for today’s clash against Newcastle.

Fletcher was likely to start on the bench as he competed with in-form Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who got off the mark in last week’s 1-1 draw at Everton, and Kevin Doyle, who is edging towards full fitness after his calf injury.

Ironically, McCarthy, who also has former Celtic and Hull striker and free agent Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink on his radar as a possible target, is a big admirer of Andy Carroll, the in-form man in opposition and the Toon’s hat-trick hero in last week’s 6-0 win over Villa.

Asked if his strikers are as good as anyone outside the top four or five teams, he said: “I think they are. I’m delighted with our centre forwards.

“Fletcher was excellent on the first day, although he’s been injured since and it’s great to see him fit again. But Sylvan played that day and did really well and put a real shift in.”

He had a different game at Everton last weekend but put another great shift in and got a goal.

“So there’s only Doyle who hasn’t scored and yet he was outstanding for us last season – our best player by a mile. He was one of the best centre-forwards around.

“It’s fantastic to have the three of them back and competing for places.

“I think we have strikers who can all play that centre-forward’s role.

“Maybe they’re not all brilliant in the air, but they compete in the air and they’ve proved they can score goals.

“Sylvan might have only got two last season, against Villa and Blackburn, but he’s got one already this time in two games. Fletcher and Doyle scored their fair share last season.”

Holland international Vennegoor of Hesselink is without a club after his release from the Tigers.

But McCarthy is happy either way about signing a fourth forward. “We can play with one up front and we’ve got a number of options where we can play with three so I’m not desperately in need of one,” he said.

“”But if one turns up we may well sign one.”

happy with everything mick has said on this apart from he is happy if we dont sign a striker or not ?? name a team in this country that only has 3 strikers every team has 4 strikers at least we have got rid of big chris, the hoff, vokes, keogh so of course we need another striker mick!

i would take Vennegoor of Hesselink though at hull away he was a big big threat he is a really big lad and can cause defence problems and he is on a free transfer so why not!

We’re still due one more signing and the word on the street is that it could be a big one.

Whilst we lack a significant target man presence up front all of the current strikers can compete in the air, as Mick says. Therefore my tip is Robbie Keane on-loan for the season.

Stranger things have happend in football………..

Cannot even contemplate that MM is after Vennegoor of Hesselink. This player is useless as was shown in his performances at Hull last season!!!! Why do we want to take a Championship Clubs outcast???? UNBELIEVEABLE!!

With SEB finally finding his form, and our 2 record signings both strikers, McCarthy’s hardly gonna go out and get a player who’ll come in above any of those three. the article above even quotes him as saying the 3 we have are as good as anyone else in the league. IF we get a 4th striker, he will be a benchwarmer, so players like Vennegoor of Hesselink and Robbie Keane are unlikely to say the least. He’ll either retain Vokes and give him the chance to prove himself in the odd game here and there, or else sign a promising young championship / scottish level forward and give them a chance to compete for a place behind the 3 established strikers.

2, I dont get you, Who would want too come too wolves to be a Backup striker behind Doyle, Fletcher and SEB ? Ok we have let some strikes go but they would not be Prem standard. Vokes will be back soon and we have some great youth strikers. And even if we loose two strikes to injury for a long perioud (Very unlikely) We can play 4-5-1. That worked last season right?

I’d be very surprised if Keano came back. And much as he lit up our scene when he was a part of us, I’m not sure that it would be a good idea.
