Albion losing out in the race for Marc Wilson
Saturday 28th August 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Roberto Di Matteo fears Albion could be “out of the race” for Portsmouth captain Marc Wilson after West Ham became the latest club to show an interest.
The Baggies are now looking at alternative targets before Tuesday’s transfer deadline with former Wigan utility man Paul Scharner on their radar, with contact having been made with the Austrian’s agent.
West Ham’s Radoslav Kovac is another name in the frame.
Albion have had two bids rejected by Pompey for Wilson, with the second offer worth more than £2.5m.
But they have yet to make a third bid with Stoke and West Ham both reportedly plotting moves.
And head coach Di Matteo admitted: “Our bid was rejected and I think that leaves us out of the race.”
A deal for a defensive midfielder is the only new piece of business likely after Marc-Antoine Fortune became the summer’s sixth new face yesterday.
But Di Matteo admitted he could find it difficult to locate an alternative for Wilson. He said: “We are looking for a versatile player that can play in various positions and he has shown he can do that.”
