Wolves plan to do it for Matt Murray
Friday 27th August 2010, 10:59AM BST.
Wolves players say they will dedicate tomorrow’s game to goalkeeper Matt Murray if they beat Newcastle.
Mick McCarthy’s squad were shocked at the timing of yesterday’s announcement at Murray’s retirement, even though they had known for some days that the 29-year-old had a big decision to make.
Such was the long-term nature of the goalkeeper’s injuries that many of the current squad had never played with him.
But they were all touched by his personality and the hugely positive approach to the battle to save his career.
Captain Karl Henry said: “It would be nice to give him a good send-off.
“Matt’s always been a big part of things around the club and the changing room, talks to a lot of the players and helps the goalkeepers.
“It would be good to dedicate the game to him if we get the right result tomorrow.”
Defender Jody Craddock added: “We’ll still be going into the game determined to win it, like we always do.
“But if we win it, we can dedicate it to Matt, which would be fantastic.”
Murray is set for a future at Wolves in some capacity.
He said: “I’ll certainly be hoping that one day I’m involved in some capacity at this club again.
“I’ve done my first coaching badge and have enquired about the goalkeeping coaching badge.
“I’m still toying with the idea of dong a degree in sports science as well.”
Chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed the club are looking at ways at keeping Murray on board.
He said: “We want him to stay for the next year and will talk to him beyond that about what he might be able to do at the club.
“There’s still so much that Murray has to offer.”

Whatever he decides to do at wolves, im sure he will have a fantastic influence. If he eventually becomes a goalkeeping coach, hopefully he can rub off on some of our keepers and help them put in performances similar to how matt could play. If they perform half as well as how Murray could perform, they would do well.

Real shame , was an excellent keeper. sorry to hear it

its such a shame, he would of been a world class goalkeeper no doubt! Unlucky matt all the best in whatever you decide to do. You will alwaysd be a wolf!

Gutted about matt retiring but the past 2 years must have been really frustrating for him.
If he becomes the goal keeping coach then will be good but you cant say USA has not been brill look at last saturday at goodison that save where cahill shot it was dipping right into the top corner and he just got finger tips to it and knocked it over!
As for the new striker coming in i doubt anything will happen before the newcastle game now no doubt mick will be having a good look for a striker sunday/monday or even leave it till tuesday on the last day but nobody get your hopes up of bringing in a big name striker its only going to be a decent striker to sit on the bench for when he is needed he wont bring in no one better than fletch and doyle.
just hope fletch is fit for tomorrow aswell as van damme cause van damme was amazing down the left against stoke from that game alone couldnt say a bad word about him!

I think he should be come a youth team GK coach. He always seemed to have time for the younger fans.
Could he be a fitness coach like Daley?

i do hope wolves find him a role ,it was a shame to hear matt retiring.met him once and he was one of the nicest guy you could met.a legend in the making!

Wolves AY I… Yep I agree with that! I hope that Matt can still have a roll somewhere with wolves. A youth team GK coach would be an ideal posisition if they can come up with it. Hope your listening boys

i am a bggies fan but would just like to say that matt murray was one of the nicest human beings i have ever met.no cockiness as a prem footballer but a thoroughly decent human being who would have been england keeper were it not for injuries.good luck in retirement and good luck to us both this season,
you see,we can all be nice if we try and although we love it when we beat each other, only the idiots spoil a good day out.
2-black country derbies in the prem is what weve been waiting for so lets enjoy and accept defeat gracefully whichever way the results go.

We last saw Matt play in a reserve game against Leeds at Wakefield, the crowd was 198 and we stood behind the goal cheering on our hero. From the way he has handled himself through his attempts to recover and his current sad decision to retire, he is still our hero and always will be.
All the very best for the future, hopefully there will be a role for you at Wolves, we need the quality and inspiration you provide.
Always Black and Gold forever.
Will be cheering again tomorrow!!

Absolutely gutted for Matt.. A great keeper and an absolute gent. Hopefully we WILL still see him around Molineux in some capacity.

It would be splendid if Matt came out on to the pitch at half time tomorrow and waved farewell from the pitch he graced so magnificently. A sad loss for WWFC and England. All the best for the future.

Thanks for the years big man and thanks for giving youre physical well being to Wolves cause over the years too.
One of footballs good guys that deserved so much more.
i think we can all say that if Matty hadnt had all these injuries he’d be Englands No1.

A sad end to a once promising career. I was there for his debut, and although we lost 3-2, it wasnt by any means Murrays fault. A great keeper who could have been right at the top. Hopefully he will be around Wolves for years to come in some capacity. He’s handled his injury nightmare with dignity, and he will be fondly remembered by the Wolves fans.
Also, it grieves me to say, but thank you to the baggies fans for their kind comments too. (Bob Lowe – nicely put)

i reckon matty should play tomorrow , with zubar back , van damme fit … fletcher fit , bionic craddock at center half, doyle fit , that whippet jarvis flying down the wing , i dont reckon he d have too much do…… CMON WANDERERS !!

It’s horrible when a promising career is cut short by injury and serves to remind us that football can be a dangerous game as well as beautiful. Let’s hope Wolves can re-settle him within the club he loved. Matt, if you cam be as useful to Wolves as Michael Appleton has been to Albion, you’ll be fine.
Good luck in your career change.

I’m so gutted wanted to see him in the gold and black atleast one more time! I brought the championship final disk just to remember how much of a wonderful goalkeeper he was! Great in all aspects and always with a posting attitude! He will be missed I just hope wolves will decide to train him up in coaching and he gets a space on Micks team! Good though and wish you well

Mick
Bring Matt on for the last 5 minutes tomorrow.
What a welcome he would get.

matt murray good luck my FRIEND.
You were a good keeper and most likely you would have been a great keeper.
Only you could not KICK.
I hope yoy are able to stay on in some capacity and may even become MANAGER at wolves in the FUTURE.
If there is good to come out of this, then it must be for the other players to appreciate how lucky they are and not to ever get complacent.Simply do your best and work your hardest as a footballer you get paid well for what you love doing.
