Wolves fans should dare to dream
Friday 27th August 2010, 9:10AM BST.
Wolves blogger Tim Spiers believes there is nothing wrong of dreaming of the club’s glory days even in what is a very different game today.
If there’s one thing I can’t stand about the Premier League, it’s the never ending gluttonous media hyperbole.
Walcott is world class! Manchester United drop two points in title race! Andy Carroll for England!
So screamed certain newspaper, TV, internet and radio outlets after yet another weekend of fixtures, which no doubt had a cataclysmic effect on next May’s league standings.
In the relentless 24/7 football culture we find ourselves in – embodied perfectly by Sky Sports News – every game, including a pre-season friendly, is a must win and every game carries with it monumental importance.
Mind you, over in the golden seats at Molineux this is something we can well associate with, expectations have long outstripped realisms in this small corner of the football globe.
So, if Chelsea are already champions, Newcastle are safe from the drop and Wigan are doomed for the Championship, what does a four-point haul from two games tell us about how Wolves will fare this season?
Personally I’m optimistic of a fairly comfortable season in mid-table.
The way we so forcefully earned ourselves a point at Goodison Park on Saturday, and proceeded to go for all three once Sylvan Ebanks-Blake had equalised, hints that we’re ready to put a few noses out of joint this year and make a big mark on the division.
One of the most promising aspects of the game was that of the 14 who played only Messrs Hahnemann, Doyle, Halford and Guedioura have been signed since our Championship promotion season.
It’s a sign that our youthful squad are learning on the job as they go and is a testament to the work boss Mick McCarthy and his underappreciated assistant Terry Connor put in day after day behind the scenes.
Three points against Newcastle on Saturday and the expectations bar will be raised even higher – some will be dreaming of top half, even Europe and beyond.
But then that’s our prerogative as lifelong supporters, particularly of a club which once had the right to call itself one of the greatest in the world.
Many of us have been brought up on tales of when Stan Cullis, Billy Wright, Ron Flowers and Peter Broadbent guided us to three – one more than those football powerhouses Manchester City and Tottenham – league titles.
With that in my mind, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming that one day we’ll return to the top step of English football once again.
It’s often been said that the great expectations Wolves fans have are a burden on the players – well, on the contrary, it’s a burden on us, the cursed supporters!
At a club as grand as ours, with the tradition and history we possess, Championship football or Premier League relegation battles are hard to swallow for supporters of a certain vintage.
Plenty was made of the controversial ‘You’ve Let Us Down Again’ banner after the 2002 promotion cock-up but, let’s be honest, it was true.
Wolves had let us down again in the respect that once more we were light years from where we all thought the club should be.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with dreaming of those 1950s or even 1970s glory days to return.
The problems come when that expectation turns into anger and frustration at the current crop not being good enough to lift us to the highest level.
One man who often played like he took the weight of 28,000 people’s dreams on his shoulder was Andy Keogh.
It wasn’t a surprise to see Keogh move on to pastures new at Cardiff this week, but I for one was sad to see him go.
His many qualities and faults have been the subject of thousands of debates between Wolves fans over the past three years, so I won’t repeat those now.
All I’ll say is that it’s a crying shame that Keogh, for whatever reason, couldn’t quite realise his undoubted potential in a gold shirt.
Unfortunately the same can also be said of Matt Murray whose retirement on Thursday was devastating, if again not unexpected, news.
Murray is without doubt the best goalkeeper I’ve ever witnessed diving around the Molineux goalmouth and I doubt we’ll see a home-grown player as good as him for a very long time.
His two seasons in a Wolves jersey, 2002-03 and 2006-07, carry many fond memories and during the latter campaign in particular Murray was without doubt one of the best goalkeepers in the country.
Without him we certainly wouldn’t have reached the play-offs that year, he single-handedly won us a few games along the way.
Never more so than in that famous 1-0 win over the Baggies at Molineux when Diomansy Kamara must have felt like the ball was magnetically attracted to Murray’s considerable frame.
Another very happy memory from that season was a jubilant win at Leicester on the final day which confirmed our play-off spot.
Murray and Keogh both starred at the Walkers as we trounced the Foxes 4-1 and recalling the sense of unbridled glee and optimism among the travelling gold and black army at the final whistle gives me goosebumps even now.
Keogh’s stock was at its pinnacle that day – in 2007-08 his fall from grace was to be ugly and dramatic.
As for Murray, he never played for Wolves again. Funny old game, as they say.
Right, to finish off I’ve penned a couple more expectations for the coming season.
After being refused the contract to take over the new Olympic stadium after 2012, David Sullivan to claim Lords Cricket Ground as the perfect ground for West Ham when they leave Upton Park.
“We’ll even give the MCC members half price season tickets!!” enthuses Sullivan. “Forget hundreds of years of cricket tradition, that’s in the past ain’t it? The Hammers are the future!
“Bish bash bosh.”
Arsene Wenger to protest about Stoke’s overly physical approach as the Potters claim a gritty 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
“They’re animals!” screams Wenger. “One of them broke Van Persie’s toenail!”
And what about when Bendtner blatantly dived to win a penalty Mr Wenger? “I didn’t see it.”
Following Albion’s miserable relegation from the Premier League with just 13 points, Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace defends the club’s penny-pinching spending policy and vows they’ll come back stronger than ever in 2012.
“I’ve got big plans for when we get promoted from the Championship again,” he says. “I’ll be stretching the budget to three loan signings.
“We’ve got the long term future of the club in mind, we’re not daft here.”
After Barcelona midfielder Xavi sees a goal ruled out in the Champions League final, despite the balling clearing dropping two feet over the line before bouncing back out again, FIFA president Sepp Blatter promises to introduce goal line technology before the year 2059.
“We want to get this absolutely right,” Blatter says. “Don’t try and tell me FIFA is a backwards organisation.
“For the next World Cup we’re offering women free bikinis with every ticket they buy as long as they promise to wear them in the stadium.
“We aim to please!”
Enjoy the game if you’re going on Saturday. Champions League here we come!

High hopes? Absolutely. Disappointment? probably….but you never give up hoping do you?
I am not sure that I agree with the comments about Andy Keogh – I think that he did reach his potential with us. I think he always played with great heart and enthusiasm and never let us down due to lack of effort. His basic problem was that he couldn’t put the ball in then back of the net often enough – a big problem for a striker.
I think that his rightful level is championship and I wish him well at Cardiff – I just thought it was a shame that some fans treated him so poorly and celebrated his departure as if he was the Devil himself. The guy always gave his best and deserves respect for that even if the overall achievement was not as high as we needed.

I think realistically we will finish 13th. We are better than Albion, Blackpool, Wigan, Newcastle, Bolton, Sunderland and Blackburn. Steady progress is the key.
Best wishes to Matt Murray and hopefully he will be on the pitch tomorrow to recieve a deserved send-off from the fans.

A few more expectations;
- Mick to praise Ward for ‘putting a shift in’, whilst playing him in every position on the pitch.
- Henry to contemplate a forward pass, but decides the safest option is a backpass to keeper from 70 yards.
- Clipboard Connor almost makes a dynamic substitution, before deciding to put Halford or Stearman on again.
- Jez runs out of hair gel.

Good blog again Tim, i do agree that the media really do hype up every game in the premier league, but i do think its all down to money…Every place you finish in the table is so important now and its all to do with money…I love all the hype of being in the premiership because for years and years all i could do was dream about wolves being in the top league (1st match was 1990), so i am just going with the flow and getting swept up…I do have higher expectations this season, last year was all about surviving and again it is the same this season but i have more faith and belief that we can finish higher and really compete with most of the teams…I am so proud to be a wolves fan because i really believe in our team and am so proud of what the boys are achieving.

Our past history imv is something we look back on with pride Football has now gone way out of all proportion to the point where footballers at higher league levels have placed themselves into God like status/ Rock stars and contracts are now a one way street in favour of the player
My thoughts go to Matt Murray more than Mr Keogh as Keogh still has a career he can either make or break depending on his own mental attitude (I for one have never accepted the fans ‘pressure’ excuse’ for Keoghs clear inabillity to do what strikers are paid for – score goals regularly (even in the Championship)!
Whereas Matt Murray was more often than not a very very good keeper for Wolves and England but sadly never had the chance to prove his undoubted talent at Full England status
I do however wish both of them well in their careers whatever they do and thank them for their part no matter how small or big in helping the club reach the heights of the Prem
Some people have made noises (albeit mostly tongue in cheek) that Wolves can aim for a place in Europe – I for one will be happy with safety first and anything else would be a bonus
With the visit of Newcastle upon us and their recent demolition of Villa (ouch) we must imv focus on our game and look to be more ‘up for it’ than our opposition – as I fear anything less than 100% from all 11 players will give the Toon any excuse to punish us and I do believe that they will be chomping at the bit to take another Midlands scalp – but as they say ‘Its a funny old game’ so anything can happen on the day
Up the Wolves!

A great shame about Matt Murray, as jokers like Carson and Green are nowhere near as talented as him. All the best and I hope you are able to come back in a coaching role. As for Keogh, he is venturing to Wolves reserves – Kennedy, Gyepes, Naylor, Olofinjana and Bothroyd – and surely has a great opportunity to get promoted again.
As for this Saturday, let’s forget what the Geordies did to Aston Vile. Their defending is woeful at present! Let’s get in their faces and utilise the class of players like Jarvis and Doyle. Wolves to win 2-1 and that will be a great start to the season!

With regard to the comments on Keogh, please bear in mind that he is on a season long loan.
If he does not perform very well, then he will probably return to Molineux next year.
If his performances are exceptionally good, will McCarthy have second thoughts and retain him?

No.1, I have to say, ive not met or heard anybody celebrate Keoghs departure?
I personally would of been cool with him staying.
Maybe I walk round with my ears closed?

Here’s a prediction for you, 6 points for us from two games against you! As usual :)

BobWolf – When are you going to be happy with Wolves? What would make you a happy Wolves fan? Do you think your expectations may be slightly dillusional? Or, are you as a lot of people think, an albion wum? If you are a wum then you should take a good look at how sad your life is. Do you really not have anything better to do?
Some wums are amusing, but you’re just an oxygen thief. I’d just end it all if i were you.

Bob Wolf goes back to the Albion page and gets a life..
Really boring now Bob and is it still school holidsys lol

Totally agree with you KaiserWolves, either BobWolf has totally different expectations than the rest of us humans, or he is indeed a supporter from Sandwell Town !!

bobwolf- you wouldn’t be happy if wolves won the premier league, champions league, league cup and F.A cup all in 1 season. Seriously, go and look in the mirror and wake up.

You obviously like Keogh and know a bit about the history, but I’m not sure where this blog is going!!!!! I don’t here any excitement, enthusiasm or ra ra ra rallying the troops, for what is surely going to be a very exciting high tempo close game.
Newcastle will absolutely be up for it 100% they just battered the Villa and now there after the next scalp, they will be coming down to the Black Country absolutely full of it, they will be out of the blocks at 3.00pm full steam ahead, pushing pushing pushing trying to keep control and trying desperatly to get that important early goal ……… But we will be ready, lets be honest we have had a better start than most of us really believed. The boys genuinely think they can do it again, were well organised, disciplined and everyone one of them is committed to the cause, the team spirit can hardly be improved on. Its going to be a very interesting first Twenty Minutes, but then we will start to take more and more control, its got the making of a great game… The score will be
2-1 for the Wolves but Newcastle will score first and no prizes who will get their goal. As for our goals I have everything crossed it will be SEB…If you have a God, have a word,if you have a lucky charm keep it close, Just bring it on……….. Yee Haa

18) The same Routledge that failed at Villa and QPR… yeah right. You and Bob Wolf are clueless about football!
As for the Tesco’s on here…. won one game against a poor team and thrashed in the other – 6 points? Not a chance!

14) Cannockwolf. Not everybody has a problem with Ward, it’s just a few dimwits like 3 and 17/18.
Their lack of understanding on how useful a squad player Ward is, and more astonishingly Karl Henry’s vital contribution to Wolves cause clearly means they never played the game, or were the last to be picked in the school playground.
Don’t believe it’s the ‘official bloggers’ job to wind up the baggies. Stick to the Wolves and the bigger football debates.

A few more expectations;
- BobWolf will say something positive
- BobWolf says who he really supports

What a good blog from Tim and laughed so much at the predictions.
Very sad news on Matt Murray but wish him all the best for the future – whatever that may bring. Also, sorry to see Keogh go as thought he was a good all-rounder. However, not entirely sure that he is Premier league standard.
Looking forward to going to the game tomorrow and think Wolves will nick it by the odd goal. Said on here after the Stoke game – going into September with 7 points and a 3rd round place in the Carling Cup – fantastic start.
We are Wolves!!!!

I think the pressure on Keogh was completely unfair. He was no worse then then any striker we have had between when Keane left and when SEB joined. I believe it was just the fans desperation to catch up when we could see albion and blues drifting away.
Keogh was brought in to take us up the championship table and he did. Sometimes players are just not good enough to go further and there is no point having a got at them as a result. He arguably scored the most important goal in recent times. One that all but secured promotion at Derby when with 4 remaining games it could so easily slipped away. For that he should be respected.
He knows he’s not good enough now and so does Mick which is why he has gone quietly off to another team who needs help. Time to leave it at that.

It seems to me the majority of people who post on this site expect Wolves to have 10 Lionel Messi’s on the pitch – WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE LADS!!
Players like Henry and Ward do a fantastic job for the overall team effort, after all it is a TEAM GAME!
I am very positive that we are in for a good season- even put a tenner on Wolves being the top Midlands club at 25 to 1! Nice

19) yam yam wolf… how is playing 44 games for qpr failing? if your going to say anything at all please say something correct… u have no idea what your talking about, ward is our weakness hence he gave away the freekick that should of been a pen for their goal, we could have won 1 nil if it wernt for that joke of a player

Cracking post today. You’re right about Keogh in terms of how he played. Except that it is more likely he carried the weight of the whole of the Wolverhampton population when he played. Keep up the good blogs. Keep the torches shining and Up the Wolves!

I understand the Keogh debate not good enough for the Prem cant score etc, but I for one like most I think would like to thank him for his services and do remember the Foxes game with great joy and would like to add another…Derby away in our Championship winning year and the no sorry THAT picture of Keogh with his shirt off and well toned body with all the players around him ALL knowing that that was the result that really made sure we were going up? UTW
Prediction tomorrow Wolves 1 0 scrappy affair but ultimately 7 points on the board.

Looking at our fixtures when they came out I thought then the gods had smiled on us as we need a good start with 6 winnable games to start off with.
A win today would be great a draw wont be a disaster but lets not get carried away shall we.
MM must have taken leave of his senses if he has said our 3 strikers are the best combination outside the top 4 – btter than we’ve had yes but between them they score less than 20 goals last season in open play!
Lets get behind them but lets not burden them unfairly…
