Marek Cech faces six weeks out
Friday 27th August 2010, 10:56AM BST.
Albion defender Marek Cech is out for around six weeks after X-rays showed a broken metatarsal.
The Slovakia international is likely to miss at least five Premier League matches, after the Baggies’ cup curse struck again in Tuesday’s victory at Leyton Orient.
Cech was only introduced as a 61st-minute substitute in a largely second-string side in the Carling Cup second-round clash, but lasted just 24 minutes before being injured in a 50-50 challenge.
Head coach Roberto Di Matteo said: “We didn’t think it was going to be that bad after the game.
“But after we scanned him he had an x-ray and he has fractured his metatarsal so he will be out for about six weeks. I am disappointed that we lost Marek to injury.
“That’s the last thing we needed and he will be out for quite a long time so that’s a big disappointment.”
Cech has become the first Baggies player of this season to be injured in cup competitions.
But Di Matteo is no stranger to such incidents, having seen Abdoulaye Meite and Gonzalo Jara injured in knockout matches last term, with Youssouf Mulumbu and Jerome Thomas both suspended after red cards in cup matches.
Cech, who left the training ground on crutches yesterday, is now set to miss the Premier League matches against Liverpool on Sunday and Tottenham, Birmingham, Arsenal, and Bolton in the coming weeks.

Not so good news here. It’s typical, as I thought he had a great game against Sunderland and he got injured in a Cup game we didn’t really care about at all.
Step up Nicky Shorey, here’s your opportunity to keep Cech out of the starting XI for more than 6 weeks.
All the best with the recovery Marek.

I said earlier he was beginning to tackle for fun and had become a complete left back. This might set him back in the head as well as the foot! Who have we got for that position?

Shame for Cech thought he had been our best player over the 2 league games this season, gives Shorey a chance though.

A bad loss indeed but it gives Nicky Shorey a chance to prove he still has it and I think he has.
You can bet your bottom dollar he will play out of his skin to prove a point so not so bad for us.

The caption says “Broken Metatarsal”. Whilst
it’s still bad news there’s a big differance
broken and fractured. Speedy recovery Marek.
As stated before ( Apart from our Cyril ) it gives Nicky Shorey a chance to stamp his authority in the team.

Jack, it was a ‘senior moment’ trying to remember Shorey’s name. But what an initiation for him. Liddypol. Let’s hope he’s calm and ready for it. A fracture should heal more quickly than a break I suppose, but what a shame for Marek because he really was on top form.

Cyril,
I know the feeling well.I posted on a Villa string and couldn’t remember Curtis Davies’
name, then straight after posted on here and there it was. Also with my dodgy fingers I sometimes double click on a letter and post without checking properly. Lifes full of fun
mate. you are right about damaged bones, First-Aid is very valuable.
