Chris Brunt’s backing Odemwingie

Chris Brunt today backed new-boy Peter Odemwingie to be a Hawthorns hit but urged fans to be patient with the Nigeria international.

Brunt has been impressed with the £2m signing from Lokomotiv Moscow, who hit the winner on his debut against Sunderland on Saturday.

But the Baggies wide man believes Odemwingie will still need time to adapt completely to life in England.

He said: “Peter had a great debut. He jumped in head first and did well.

“I think everybody will expect him to do it every game but it will be tough. You can run on adrenalin in your first game because it’s such a big occasion.

“But he needs time to settle in, it was his first home game and, yes, he did well. He has to adapt to this country so we have to be patient with him.

“I think we’ve seen enough to know that he’s got quality and if he does well then there’s no reason why he can’t get us 10 or 15 goals this season.

“He seems to have the attributes. He’s a confident, cheerful lad and he’ll fit in.

“He speaks perfect English so that will help massively. He looked sharp on the Friday in training but I read what the gaffer said, and he was probably right — it was a gamble and it paid off.

“We didn’t know much about him and, credit to him, he did everything that, speaking as a midfielder, you want from a striker.

“First impressions, though, are very good. His attitude is top drawer in training and he did the business on the pitch.”
