Michael Mancienne has ‘come home’

Michael Mancienne today completed his latest move to Wolves and declared “I have come home” after snubbing rival Premier League offers.

The 22-year-old utility man sealed his season-long loan from Chelsea, as Wolves saw off late competition from West Ham and reported interest from Saturday’s opponents Newcastle as well as clubs in Spain.

Mancienne snubbed a chance to stay in the capital to join Wolves for a third time out of loyalty to boss Mick McCarthy, the club’s hierarchy, players are fans, having settled well in the area in his two previous loan spells.

He said: “Wolves have been very good to me in the past and I’m delighted to be back.

“In a way it feels like I’m coming back home and I’m really looking forward to the season.

“There were other alternatives, but the gaffer here has been really good to me and had faith in me and helped me improve my game.

“That played a big part in my decision.”

Having seen him play all across the back four in the last two years, Wolves now see Mancienne primarily as a holding midfelder, where he excelled during the second-half of last season.

He said: “I’ve played in both midfield and defence here but I’m happy to play wherever I’m put.”

A loan move was the only way Mancienne was going to secure regular first-team football, with Chelsea insisting on clubs meeting their £5million valuation and Wolves refusing to budge beyond a £3million bid.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “We did speak to Chelsea about a permanent deal but it was decided the best course of action was another season long loan.

“Michael was happy to do that, and although he had other alternatives, decided to come back to Wolves.

“He’s got a very good relationship here with everyone, and we’re delighted to see him back.”

Mancienne added: “It didn’t look like anything was going to happen with Chelsea and I want to play.

“I think the squad is already looking stronger with the new signings and they’ve made a great start as well.

“Hopefully we can do well again.”

McCarthy said: “We know his quality and it’s great to have him back.

“He’s very versatile and can operate in different positions.”

Get Mancienne in as soon as possible. Drop Henry, he offers nothing. Mancienne is quicker on the ball, and has a quicker footballing brain. Henry offers nothing at all as a holding midfielder. I don’t even know why he is Captain, i’ve never heard him shout at anyone.

Great Stuff, wonder which striker we will go for. Its always gonna be a back up striker, so a lower league with proilific record or a seasoned PL proven??

Interesting news about Ikeme, could be promising news for Murray in the 25 man squad then. I know its a 28 day loan, but the signs that MM is willing to let Ikeme go on any loan looks like he is thinking of keeping Murray at the club, which I would prefer. Keep a closer eye on his fitness, and he is a far better keeper, if we keep him fit. IF?????

    Nice one!

Happy about this signing, i believe this lad will improve into a quality holding midfielder but will still always be able to do a decent job in central defence and at full back.

    Good signing. :)

Agree with the need for one more striker as well. Although i am very happy with the 3 we have, somebody with bags of pace would be nice though.

    Welcome back Michael!
Chelsea are obviously playing ‘hardball’ with Wolves in wanting £5M for Mancienne when he has hardly kicked a ball for them over the past 3 years – maybe they are struggling to find money to buy players?
Anyway, the £3M we have saved on buying Mancienne should get us a decent back-up striker to replace Keogh – the big question though is who?

Moxey is a priceless star, ‘he says we think an awful lot of Michael Mancienne, what a joke they cant think that much of him other wise they would have met Chelski’s valuation of him, and NOT tried to ‘penny pinch’ him away from them. So they’ve got him again on loan, which im happy about as i dont rate him worth £2M never mind £3M or Chelski’s silly price of £5M. At least we can use him as a back up for Karl Henry, but like i said yesterday id sooner play Stearman who is a much stronger player in the tackle and his height for winning headers, plus he’s a decent player going forward with the ball at his feet, and chips in with the odd goal. He just needs to cut out them suicidal tackles which give pens away and get him sent off. Im not sure we need to rush and spend the £3M they have spare now on a new striker, when they’ve said ‘most of the games they will play with one striker up front’. It will be hard enough keeping Doyle’Fletcher and SEB happy when playing 4.5.1 so lets keep the money and wait and see who’s available and what positions ‘need’ covering in January. UTW

Good move. I think weve done some good business this transfer window. I think we should loan a young striker from one of the top clubs now, just to backup our 3 current strikers. If we didnt bring in a striker, i dont think it would be doom and gloom, as we have always got some of our youngsters that could hopefully make the step up for a few games if needed.

    Great signing.

He was a key player in the 4-5-1 system, which I think we will still use against the top teams.

He may struggle to nudge out Henry in midfield if we stick with 4-4-2 but he’s great to have in the squad, as he can play a number of positions well. Hopefully we can get him permanently.

I still think the club have a striker on their radar and I yesterday heard several rumours it would be Heskey on loan?!

Please o have him back, he is versatile, his work rate is first class and he never moans. He is a solid pro! I believe the board were right to not pay £5m though as he has not proved himself to be THAT good yet, and £2-3m was about right.

As for a striker, well lets wait and see. I cannot see why we are signing one, if we have the option to be successful at 4-5-1 as well as 442. For me, we need a fit winger, and I would be spending that cash on Eagles from Burnley. Nobody knows when Kites will be fit again, and we still haven’t got Hunt fit. Basically we only have Jarvo fit, and I’m not prepared to watch Foley struggle with a Right Wing role again.

Zubar is going to fight Foley for his place, I just hope Mick doesn’t push Foley up the pitch because he is a full back not a winger.

This time of year is always the silly season and some very silly things were posted by a minority of Wolves fans regarding Mancienne and whether he was good enough, strong enough, big enough and why no other club’s wanted him (don’t you read the papers, boys ?).
This lad is developing superbly, he still has a way to go and if he can add better distribution to his skills, reading the game and pace, we will have a player who may well be worth 5 million by season end. He will continue to learn a lot from Karl Henry who has got the art of the holding midfielder’s role off to a fine art (why is it duffers like 8 cannot grasp the way KH does his job ? They obviously have never played the game)
Good to have Michael back and well done MMMs for playing the waiting game in this silly season which will be even sillier as the window closes on this 25 man squad rule.

PS Do find the month’s loan of Ikeme confusing. Presumably we will still name him in our 25 as a homegrown, ‘cos I don’t believe Murray is ready and surely we can’t go into the first half of the season with only 2 keepers (yeah, I know about the emergency clause)

It would seem that Mancienne has finally realised that his future in football is not going to be at Chelsea.
He is good young player who generally performed well last season in a defensive midfield position and played a major part in our survival.
If he does the same the season I would hope we can strike a deal with Chelsea and sign him permanantly.
