Matt Murray retires from football
Thursday 26th August 2010, 12:30PM BST.
Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray has announced his retirement from football after failing to overcome a knee injury.
The 29-year-old has finally forced to admit defeat in his long battle to overcome the problem.
Last month Murray had briefly rejoined full training on the club’s pre-season tour of Ireland, but was unable to make the final breakthrough.
His last comeback ended in disappointment in November when he lasted 20 minutes of a reserve game against Birmingham and later had further surgery.
Murray played exactly 100 games for Wolves, but the last of them came in May 2007. His final competitive action came on loan at Hereford United in November 2008, when he broke down with a ruptured patella tendon to his right knee, the injury he has struggled to come back from.
A former England under-21 international, Murray was touted as one of the country’s brightest talents and would surely have been in contention for this summer’s World Cup.
Given his debut by Dave Jones in August, 2002, his highlight came in the 2003 play-off final at the Millennium Stadium when he saved a penalty as Wolves went on to beat Sheffield United 3-0 to secure their place in the Premier League.
Murray said: “Up until a few weeks ago I thought I’d turned the corner.
“I’d always thought I could get back and the specialist said the same thing. So I kept going and gave it my all.
“I did everything I could, but I just don’t think I can play to the level I need to play at.
“It’s given me a lot of discomfort and it does affect me to the extent I was sometimes finding it difficult to walk properly after training.
“I can look at myself in the mirror and say nobody could have done any more.”
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “Matt is what I call a Wolves man – he’s a great guy. Everyone at the club is devastated for him.”
Manager Mick McCarthy said: “It’s a sad day when anyone has to retire, even more so when it’s a 29-year-old goalkeeper that in my opinion would have been one of the England regulars had he been fit.”
Murray, who has been taking his coaching badges for several months, is now expected to remain at the club in some role after taking time to reflect on his decision.

Desperately sad news to hear. Without doubt injury free would have gone on to become a world class goalkeeper.
Best of luck for the future.
Absolutely gutted.

All the best in the future Matt. Hope to see you from time to time.
Enjoy your time with your family.

I am gutted to read this. The best English keeper to never play for England. All the best for the future Matt.
Such a shame, I am certain he had the potential to play for England.
Good Luck & Best Wishes for the future Matt
Report abuse
Sorry to hear this news Matt you were a brilliant goal keeper and its such a shame you have had to end like this. All the best for the future. Hope we will still get to see you at the wolves.
Very saddened by this. As with everyone else I wish Matt all the best. So much potential unfortunatly injuries never allowed him to fulfil it. Good luck Matt. I hope he stays around the club like he deserves too.
So sad!!! He would have been a great ‘keeper if not for all his misfortunes…
Good Luck for the future Matt…
Report abuse
absolutely gutted for big Matty Murray, he had the ability to go to the very top… it’s a cruel world..wish you all the very best in whatever you choose to do… best wishes

Devestating news! I have been a regular at Molineux since 1975 and Matt is without doubt the best Wolves keeper i have ever seen. He would have been England’s number 1 for many years but for his cruel luck with injuries. I’m sure he has made the correct decision and I wish him all the very best for the future. Thanks for the memories Matt!
Very sorry to read this news but in all honesty it has been an announcement a long time coming.
Matt you have been one of the most unlucky footballers I have ever known and but for your persistent injuries, you would have been England’s no. 1 goalkeeper, that I am sure!
Good luck in whatever you have planned for the future and hopefully your injuries will not prevent you from leading a ‘normal’ life.
I am choked that the best goalkeeper in England has had to give up the game, but there has been a feeling of inevitability for some time.
I am proud that Wolves have supported Matt through his ordeal for such a long time, because that’s how we need to support our wolves.
Thanks for everything Matt, and best of luck for the future.
This is sad news because i thought Matt could have been a top, top goalkeeper. I wish him all the best for the future.
I’m gutted for the big man.
Had he been fit and on form last season, I’ve no doubt he would have been England number one for the World Cup.
What a keeper…..there are many times I remember the ball destined for the back of the net only for one of those giant Murray hands to palm it away.
I hope he gets some sort of recognition from the club for his fighting spirit and the good memories – at least a testimonial if not some sort of permanent role at the club.
All the best for the future Matt and I hope you have some great memories of your career.
Good luck for the future Murray. A sad but inevitable end of the career of a fantastic goalkeeper.
goodluck to you matt you have been a great servant to the club and if not for your injury i honestly do believe you would have gone to the top in football securing many a england cap.all the best
Report abuse
Good luck for the future Matt, such a shame you never got the chance to play top flight football.
I was watching the highlights of the play off final the other day & the various comments from commentary were of being a premier league keeper in waiting…….. crying shame but good luck

very sad news. goalkeeping coach?

Such a shame, quite a few Albion players have had to retire early due to injury (Appleton, Clement etc) and you have to feel for them all. Hope he goes into coaching or maybe counselling badly injured players

I am gutted, and a real downer.
Matt was an awesome keeper, surely the best in the country.
He is a bright lad, and I hope he can move onto great things in football, or outside.
Cheers Matt, true Wolves fans will never forget what a great keeper you are.
Very sad day, Matt was definately England material. I will always remember the play off final at Cardiff. Great Day !
I wish Matt all the best for the future.
So so sad to hear this, but inevitable I guess. I met Matt in Ireland 10 years ago on the pre-season tour, came across as a very polite young man. I had kept an eye on him when Peter Bonetti was doing some part time coaching at Wolves and other clubs. He gave an interview on the TV and said Matt was going to be the best goalkeeper in this country, he was 17 at the time. In reality Matt only played two full seasons for us, the year we were promoted in 2002/3 and MM’s first year here when we just missed promotion in the play offs. Great memories though. No doubt there will be many on here who will join me in saying “what might have been”. Good luck for the future Matt….
Without a doubt would have been England No.1, brilliant keeper when fit. Definitely should be a goalkeeping coach for the Wolves!!!
Heart breaking stuff. Matt, you were a fantastic keeper for us and will be sorely missed in the squad. Don’t think of what could have been, just be glad of the force you were as a professional goalkeeper – one of the best.

I think we should all write to Wolves and get him in the hall of fame this year!

Absolutely gutted to hear the news about Matt Murray. He was one of the best goal keepers i’ve had the privilege of watching and a big favorite with the Wolves fans.
I have no doubt in my mind that if he’d been fit he would be playing for one of the top four in the Prem and be Englands No1 keeper.
Its a massive loss for us Wolves fans that was hoping that one day we would see big Matt wearing the No1 jersey at the Wolves.
Thanks for the good times and all the very best for your future plans.
To be honest this was not to be expected…the modern day footballer needs to be 100% percent fit and no point in risking further damage that will cause him anguish in his later years.
Good luck in what ever you choose to do
Report abuse
The penalty save at Cardiff will always be in my memories. You made it happen you helped us see Premiership football for the first and I’m sure its something all Wolves fans will be grateful for.
Players fall in and out of favour with us fans but no-one has ever said a bad about word about the big fella (apart from the odd dodgy goal kick ;) ).
Very Sad news. I was hoping you would come back from injury and play but looks like it wasnt to be.
All the best for the future Matt

Such a sad sad day, bought a real tear to my eye…
One of the most talented goalkeepers not just for Wolves but also England of the most recent era…
Had it of not been for his injuries I have no doubt in my mind top honours would have followed him everywhere in his career… Would have been Englands No.1 without a shadow of doubt!!
Away from the game, Matt’s always been lovely guy to be in the company of, a true footballing gent!!!
All the best in what ever you do next, if anyone in this world deserves a break its you ma’friend…

Matt never failed to take a cross when I shouted his name from the enclosure. What a keeper and his performance at the Cardiff play-off against Sheffield is legendary; I shall watch it again tonight. Good luck Matt and thanks.

He was worth ten points a season and we would have been in the premiership two years before we were had he played.
Life can be so cruel. Best of luck Matt. You were real class and you would have gone to South Africa.
A big loss to Wolves and to the fans.

This is very sad news. Im proper gutted!!! Without a doubt Murray would of been Englands number 1 keeper in the last world cup if he had stayed fit. Had an amazing talent and will be missed by everyone! i just hope before the game on saturday we give him the send off he deserves!

Really sad, the best keeper we have had in years.
Thanks to the Baggies for their words on here too, nice to see.

Very sad news, all the best for the future Matt. Every Wolves fan knows you were one of the best keepers in the country.
Very sad news. All the best for whatever future he chooses. Hopefully it will be as a coach and source of inspiration to wannabe Wolves ´keepers of the future. This is one major position English football is woefully lacking in and Matt could have been the man but for his injuries.
Really sad news, but I think we all knew years ago that this was probably what would happen.
Good luck for the future Matt!

Best wishes to Matt on this sad day. Cruel luck to be denied a chance to play in the prem (twice)and almost certainly for England.

Shocking news! As an albion fan and im sure i speak for a lot more albion fans when I say I would like to wish him all the best for the future after hearing this news.
Top Top keeper, shame he didnt reach his full potential by possibly playing at a higher level club or even his country.
Im sure the wolves would offer him a coaching role or something for his loyalty in staying when he had numerous chances to move on.
All the best Matt!
Shame, top keeper. This is the sort of man-mountain keeper most teams dream of.
Unfortunately these injuries retired him years ago, so hopefully he’s banked enough from Wolves to secure a decent retirement from the game, worth every penny for the season leading up to the first premotion.
Sad news indeed, though perhaps expected
Let’s hope he comes out on the pitch just before the game on Saturday when the ground is full to get the reception he richly deserves, rather than in a half empty ground at half time.

A keeper who almost single handedly dragged us into the Premiership a few years ago. Those who saw him play knew they were witnessing something special.
Although the real tragedy in this is what could have been, it’s important to realise what Matt did achieve and the entertainment he gave. He should be very proud.
Thank you Matt.
Very bad news for all Wolves fans. Matt twice helped Wolves towards the Premiership. In 2003-04 he played the whole season topped up with a fine display in the Play-Off Final against Sheffield United while in 2006-07 he again played the whole Championship season to help Wolves into the Play-Off but got injured in the last match of the season.
Matt played only one match in the Premiership that is against Blackburn and after that got injured and missed the whole season as he did last season when he was totally out of the reckoning through injury.
Many say that if Matt was injury free he would have been England’s number one for a long time now and I agree.
Met him a couple of times at Molineux and he was a genteman.
Hope that the club will find him a job with Wolves as Jez Moxey said today.
Hard luck Matt but look at the brighter side of life. Good luck for the future!
We should make Saturday’s game a tribute. What about us all wearing England shirts for the Newcastle game, Matt should have pulled one on many times so what better tribute?
Very sad news. Matt had terrible problems from the start of his pro career as the tendons and ligaments in his legs never seemed to quite catch up with the bone growth. He has shown immense strength of character to keep going as long as he has. I guess we should all be grateful for the two great seasons he had and of course wish him all the best for his future.
Sad sad news Matt was a fantastic guy and exceptional keeper. Would have been Englands No1 for years but for his terrible luck with injuries. Good luck for the future Hope Wolves put a match on for him so we fans can show our appreciation . Never forget his stunning saves from Paul Inces deflection and his penalty save,in the Play Off final win over Sheff Utd

very sad to hear this all the best for the future matt surely there will be a place on the coaching staff for you to enable you to pass on your talents to a younger generation of wolves keeper

I am so upset to hear the news, i can honestly say i shed a few tears! Thank you for all the years service you have given to Wolves, especially that brilliant day in Cardiff in 2003! Very sad news to hear, good luck! You never know maybe a couple of years out and it may clear up on its own, can always hope :).

it doesnt surprise me that everyone thinks so much of him . he was fantastic . the good news is that he has nt died , and never mind the hall of fame , we should press for some sort of testimonial for him , so as we get a chance to show him how much we like him .

Tragic. A great goalkeeper who I hope has a future role at the club. A testamonial would be appropriate.

Probably the greatest goalkeeper to play for Wolves. There’s life beyond football and I hope he finds personal happiness. Thanks for the memories.

matt will always be remebered at the molineux for how great he actually was like in 2003 in the play-off final he got us there he was outstanding! by now he would have been a top 4 goalkeeper and defo englands number 1!

What an extremely sad day!

As mentioned so many times above, the best goalkeeper nevenr to play for England.
Good luck Matt – we will never forget you!

Brilliant keeper and top bloke. I feel if Matt and Joleon were fit when we first made the Premiership we would have survived. Green, Carson and Robinson – all England failures – were not fit to lace his boots in his prime.
My slight concern now is that Hahnemann is quality but someone like Hennessey is still poor off his line and we have loaned out Ikeme – who actually comes out in the Murray mode!

What bad luck for he was such a great keeper who sure would have gone on to keep for England.
All the best M8. A bad day for Wolves and him.
Good luck for the future!!

A mighty sad day for football at Wolverhampton Wanderers and for the Country. He was without doubt one of the most talented goalkeepers anyone has seen in a very very long time. Good luck for the future Matt, wherever that may take you, and be assured you will be remebered by the fans of Wolverhampton Footbal Club

Really sad news for Wolves fans but absolutely devastating for Matt. I hope Wolves can find a role for Matt within the club.

Such sad news. So much has been written on here that echoes how I feel. I met Ray Clemence on holiday recently and he stated that he believed Matt would have gone right to the top with England but for his injuries. That’s what we all believe. As Soton Wolf says, “what might have been”. Thank you, Matt, for wonderful memories. You are woven into the history of Wolves. We won’t forget you. Good luck with the next stage of your life.

Gutted for him!!!! Such a great keeper!!!! To use the words of Ian Holloway “HE’S A MONSTER”.
All the very very best Matt and thank you for producing the goods whenever you pulled on the shirt, thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!

Thats a shame, to be honest he was a top keeper, played like a man posessed against us.

Very sad, if not unexpected news. A real shame for the lad, I am sure Matt could have gone on to represent his country if only he could have stayed injury free. I wish him all the best for the future and I will be there to support you Matt when Wolves organise your testimonial.

Really, unutterably sad, and as it has been noted, nice to see Baggies paying tribute too. Hopefully Sir Terry will not feel it necessary to add his two cents’ worth.

That’s a loss for Wolves, England, and football. Cost me a few quid as well as I had bet you would play for England one day.
Stay in the game and pass some of that skill on (hopefully at Wolves).

Such a shame.
I hope Matt has more luck in his next career than he did as a keeper.
He was without doubt the best keeper we ever had and would have been England No1 were it not for his terrible luck with injuries.
Having read Moxey’s comments on the official site I hope he does stay with the club in some capacity.
I know this is on the other wolves subject today about Mancienne coming home but E&S have removed the comment box from that stream and I really wanted to reply to a comment on there – Wolvesmod – you are a moron! Henry is the best holding midfielder at our club by a country mile, he wins as many tackles in the game as most of the other players put together and if you can not see that then head straight for specsavers now! He may not create much but THAT IS NOT HIS ROLE IN THE TEAM!!!!!!
Keep you drivel to yourself until you understand the game – and take Bobwolf to class with you!
Rant over!

Feel extremely sorry for Matt too and really hope we can find him a job within the club that he will enjoy, but coaching is such a vital role at all age groups that he should only be employed as a coach if he clearly excels in that field.

Desperately sad news to hear. I am absolutely gutted. As someone else has said, Matt was surely the best English keeper never to play for the full national side. I am so sorry. But thank you for all the memories, Matt – I wish you and your family well for the future.

Surprised, no. Saddened, deeply.
We will never know how good he could have been, but to thousands of Wolves fans he was a colossus of a man and the best keeper of his generation by miles.
In my own humble opinion he would have been a 100 cap keeper for England and probably playing for a top three team that his awesome talent deserved!.
Chill out Matty give your body a rest and lets hope the club use your wonderful talent to our advantage.

It is always a sad day when a player has to retire from the game – it is even more sad when that retirement comes as a result of an injury and gutting when that player has worn the black and gold. Truly sorry Matt. I have no doubt that you would have been one of the greats and to have your career cut short is especially upsetting. I am sure that all Wolves’ fans wish you well.

You have gotta feel for Matt, he has clearly tried his heart out to get back in the game.
GOOD LUCK MATT….thanks for some really great memories, including the penalty save in the cardiff play off final !

Completely gutted. As a fellow Goalkeeper at Amateur level Matt was an idol and a roll model both on and off the pitch. Cardiff will never be forgotten, and hope he can stay on at the club. Never has a wolves player achieved so much admiration from the fans from so few games.
It’s a big testament to the big man that after years of injury he is still so highly regarded by all
Report abuse
What can I say which has already been said above. What a top bloke Matt is and its a shame his career has been cut short because of a catalogue of injuries. He will always be the guy who took us up the 1st time in the premiership because of the saves he made in that season aswell as the play off final penalty save against Sheff Utd. If it werent for injuries he would have been England’s 1 well ahead of David James, Joe Hart, Ben Foster etc etc… Matt will always be a Wolves legend and no doubt he will be involved at the wolves in years to come.
Good luck big guy!

I had an e-mail from my Dad about this earlier which pretty much sums up my own reaction to this: “Sad sad news about Matt. The best keeper England never had, and a little bit of Wolves ‘soul’ has gone today. I felt physically sick when I read the announcement.”
It’s desperately sad news, and very upsetting for a true gentleman of the sport to have been prevented becoming undoubtedly one of the finest goalkeepers in world football by cruel injury after cruel injury.
I will be singing Matt Murray’s name loud and proud on Saturday afternoon, and I’m sure every single Wolves fan at Molineux will join me.

Couldn’t kick the ball for toffe BUT!!! With his hands he was outstanding. Matt you will be truly missed all Wolves fans always hoped that the two H’s were just there to cover whilst you got fit.
Its gutting when you see that donkeys like Robinson, green and Carson got full caps for England and Matt never will.
Good luck big Matt you will always be a wolves goalkeeping great!!

Very sad to see that the inevitable has finally come to fruition. Matt has definitely made the right decision in respect of his long term health and well being and it is great to see the club getting right behind him. I’m sure he can continue to be an asset to the Wolves. All the very best Matt.
Heart warming to see the kind words from baggies too, putting all local rivalries aside it is nice when we can recognise a real local talent and offer positive stuff like this! Cheers guys!

I heard the news and was genuinely saddened. It’s actually put me on a real downer today.
The guy was quite simply an outstanding goalkeeper and was robbed of a potentially world-beating career.
I’m still hoping that after a couple of years chilling out and doing something less physically demanding he can return!!
Goodluck that man- he was the best goalkeeper I ever saw in a wolves shirt.

absolute crying shame i feel for matt.

A very sad story, particulary for someone so imensely talented. Definately the best keeper i’ve ever seen, not just at Molineux.
I had a friend who had to retire at just 20, so if your reading Matt, at least you have made some cash, played at a very high professional level, for a founder member club and infront of 80,000 people you saved a penalty for your club at the best stadium in Britain and it won us promotion to the Premiership.
You should be proud of yourself son, and thanks very much for your service, entertainment and brilliance.

It would be a great idea if he could come out on to the pitch on Saturday so all us fans can show him how much we think of him! (Take note Moxey & Co)

Haven’t got a lot to add to the sadness and best wishes of all the posters, but, I have seen every Wolves ‘keeper since the wonderful Bert Williams and although goalkeeping has changed a lot since Bert’s (and Malcolm Finlayson’s) days, you Matt were as good as any and better than most. Such a crying shame that during England’s time of goalkeeping need you should get struck with such crippling injuries.
They’ve been part of your everyday life for so long I guess an intelligent guy like you will have made contingency plans.
Have a good rest of your life.
At his best, like the top goalkeepers, you just felt nobody was going to beat him.If one did you automatically thought’how did that get passed Matt’.When you have a keeper like that it gives confidence to the entire defence. It is so sad that the glittering career we all knew lay ahead will not be fulfilled. Let us hope Matt becomes a top coach and helps Hennessey and others to become better keepers.

So sorry to hear the sad news Matt. All I can say is that hope everything goes well for you. It would be great if you could still be a part of this club in some capacity, and I agree with 65 London Wolf that it would be an extremely good idea for you to have a testimonial. Good luck Matt

Thanks for everything Matt especially Cardiff. I am old enough and lucky enough to have seen us win at Wembley 4 times but you played a huge part in giving my kids the best day in their Wolves lives. The ball seemed like a tennis ball in your giant hands.

I would just like to add my message to the ‘many many’ messages left by ‘TRUE’ Wolves fans, who ALL know what a fantastic GK, Person you really were / are. I too felt gutted when hearing the news today, in a way its like a death in the family, ive had the ‘PRIVILEDGE’ of meeting / talking to you many times matt ,and i can honestly say YOUR one of the nicest men ive ever met. WWFC must be proud of you, as you’ve NEVER given this club one day’s trouble since you first walked through the door. I just hope and pray that Mr Morgan finds you a job within the club in some capacity as you fully deserve one. Had you stayed fit i/we know full well you would have been GK at this year’s World Cup and would remain so for many year’s to come. Alas i dont think you would have been plying your trade at Wolves, as i/we are positive you would have been ‘SOLD’ to a TOP PL team like Man Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool, for a record goalkeeper fee in England. GOOD LUCK MATTY TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR FUTURE: UTW FOREVER.

I am absolutely gutted to hear of Matt’s retirement. My non-Wolves mates were fed up of hearing me say how Matt was a future England keeper in the making. Anybody who saw Matt play will know what a great keeper Wolves and England are missing out on, I wish him luck in whatever he decides to do. Go on Wolves, give us a chance to show our appreciaion and give Matt a testimonial game.

Very sad. I followed his career from here in Canada and from everything that I read he was a major talent. I have absolute empathy with him. It is a pity that Matt Murray has been forced to quit football after a series of injuries during his spell at Wolves. I wish him good luck in his quest to become a coach and may be he could again be involved with his beloved Wolves in the future. What I would like to point out here is that Wolves and the Board have shown their human aspect towards a player who was doing everything to get back on trail. So we Wolves fans should be proud of our team and all those at the helm to help Matt. Also I should like to say the goalkeeper has also shown his will to stay with his team and never wanted to go elsewhere when he was hailed as a future England’s prospect. Nowadays we see players such as Mascherano and Azmir Begovic among others do not believe in their teams but always believe into making money. As Tony Pulis said this a disease which affects lots of players as they know how to make money. Let’s hope a new era can come when we have players willing to play for their clubs once they have signed a contract and see it going the distance. Let’s hope also that Murray can find something he can do to be in football and in return help youngsters to develop in the game.

Read the Mancienne news which chuffed me to bits, then read the news about Matt which soured my good mood. I’ve heard interviews with Matt in the past and he comes across as a very bright young man, so I think he still has a future in the game. I wish him all the best in his future endevours. Very, very sad news for Matt, Wolves supporters and all the guys, such as myself and fellow supporters out here in Thailand, who were following Matts progress at every stage.
I feel privileged to have seen him play on numerous occasions in UK.
Even in the warm up before matches you could see a smoothness, a confidence in ability which stood Matt out from other keepers. This was reflected when he played matches, superb.
Tough for Matt to come to terms with, but he is fortunate in having a club such as Wolves to help him through these times.
We will continue to follow Matts progress as he seeks a new career.

Matt, you are awesome! What a great goalkeeper you are, and always will be. You’re not done, no way, because in time you will be switching gears, then using your gl’keeper brain again, helping other young aspiring Matt Murray’s! Some professionals get their average three to four years in the business, then they’re off. You already beat that, and if it works out, have decades left at the top level, being in the coaching and managing ranks! Anyhow, it will go down in history is one of the Club’s greatest moments, the 2003 playoff final, when you literally stood on your head to give us the chances we needed to score down at the other end! More so, the real victory was your unbelievably good character all throughout your fantastic determination, one injury after another, to NOT give up and quit in your pursuit to get back into the team. That was the REAL game won, and you were more than just a great example to your teammates and the rest of staff, as everyone associated with Wolves, all the way over here in the States, bounding through the entire Wolves world, will never forget the first phase, as most players only get a “first phase” in football, of your career, as you move through to the next, into the rarified quarters of coaching and managent! Thanks for the great memories and the many to come, at Wolves, hopefully, or wherever your footballing endeavors take you. God bled and “You (We) Are Wolves!”
