Bring it on says Wolves’ Kevin Doyle
Thursday 26th August 2010, 10:02AM BST.
Wolves striker Kevin Doyle is ready to welcome more competition up front as the countdown ticks away to transfer deadline day.
Manager Mick McCarthy is assessing his options, after Andy Keogh’s departure to Cardiff made it four forwards to leave this summer with fellow loanees Sam Vokes and Stefan Maierhofer, along with Chris Iwelumo’s £500,000 switch to Burnley.
Club-record signing Steven Fletcher has so far been the only striker recruited this window, as one of only three senior strikers at Molineux with Doyle and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
McCarthy is believed to be happy going into the season with his quota of three forwards but will prepare a move for another if he is given the go-ahead.
However, Doyle would welcome the arrival of another striker.
He said: “I’m glad we signed five players and spent some money. I’m glad he signed competition to keep me on my toes, but hopefully we’ll sign one or two more.
“We were 15th last year but with a month to go we were safe. I want to finish 15th or above and go forward.
“We want to do more than is just necessary to stay in the Premier League.”
Despite McCarthy’s willingness to try out two up front more this season, Doyle remains happy to play a lone role.
He said: “I was happy personally with how I played – I got everything out of it that I could have.
“Looking at it on paper, people might say, ‘he didn’t have a great season’ but I was very happy.
“People who saw me know how much I was involved.”
