Nicky Shorey returns to his roots

Leyton Orient fan Nicky Shorey will return to his roots in the Carling Cup hoping for a full Albion debut in London.

The 29-year-old is keen to make his first start in Albion colours in the Carling Cup clash at Brisbane Road, where he learned his footballing trade.

Shorey made 15 appearances for Orient before leaving for Reading as a 21-year-old.

But the left-back, whose father worked as a scout for the League One club before moving to the Reading academy set-up, revealed today his connection with the club goes back to when he was nine years old.

He said: “It’s my first time back there and I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s always nice when you go back to old clubs, especially as it is where it all started for me.

“It’s a great ground, it’s always a good pitch and I’ve got a lot of memories there.

“I grew up as an Orient fan and me and my brother used to go and watch all the games. I’ve had a few requests for tickets.

“My dad Steve worked at Leyton Orient and I played there from the age of nine until I went to Reading at 21.

“I enjoyed my time coming through the youth ranks at a lower league team. It was tough but I enjoyed it.

“It will be nice if I do get a start.”
