Leyton Orient 0 Albion 2

Pablo Ibanez headed his first Albion goal and Chris Wood struck late on to book the Baggies a place in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Pablo glanced home a 28th-minute free-kick from young debutant Sam Mantom to hand a shadow Albion line-up victory over their League One hosts.

Boss Roberto Di Matteo changed all 11 players from the team that defeated Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday but the second string had enough to see off Orient.

Mantom was given a 90-minute outing on his senior debut but there was a worrying sight for the Baggies five days ahead of their trip to Liverpool as substitute Marek Cech was helped from the field in pain after a heavy challenge.

Albion held the upper hand for the majority of the first half and fully deserved their interval lead.

Orient goalkeeper Jamie Jones made smart saves from Luke Moore, Roman Bednar and Simon Cox as the Baggies dominated possession.

Goalkeeper Boaz Myhill was tested just once on his Baggies debut when Scott McGleish broke through, the keeper responding well with a low save.

The Baggies went ahead just before the hour mark when Mantom delivered a fine free-kick for the unmarked Pablo to head inside the far post.

Jonathan Tehoue should have levelled for the home side with an unmarked far-post header but his effort went wide.

Mantom then saw his shot held by Jones, Cox fired wide and substitute Wood headed over for Albion.

McGleish also saw his header for Orient held on the line by Myhill.

Orient posed little threat late on and Albion made sure of their win when Gonzalo Jara found Wood, who shrugged off two defenders and produced a powerful low finish from a tight angle.

Cech injured. Just when he had started to make the left back position his own. Good win though and great to see Wood bang one in. Someone said we needed a battering ram to complement PO up front. We will have, soon enough.

Good win. Professional. Good support and a great community focused club to go to. Myhill impressed, Reid was a good choice as captain. Worrying about Cech. Moore and Bednar did little to enhance their reputations.

It was a good game and nice to see our youngsters given a chance to taste the real football leagues.

It was a good atmosphere too!

Attended the game last night, good result, Sam Mantom impressed greatly , good technique and passed the ball well.Well done Mr Appleton.

Just for the record i am about as Greek as Winston Churchill, so the comments about Turkey etc are somewhat misplaced, nice to know that one blogger knew that Istanbul is in Turkey , where there’s life there’s hope apparantly.

7 Sir Tel-I see that near the end of 90 minutes, wolves brought on the ‘big guns’,Doyle and Ebonks-Blake,because Mick said the game needed a goal-it worked, because not long after Southend scored.Nice to see the manager knows how to make inspired substitutions.

Jack your slipping again. What has happened to the apostrophe? It is who’s nt whos.
You will probably get the freebies if you ask nicely. We know that you haven’t got any money for players hence the 999 emergency logo on the shirts.

Now look at the “plank in your own eye” as you have had to have a second shot at it.
    SEE (13).

How can we have any money when wolves have it all.
Regarding the freebies: O.K. as long as the pies are Melton ” MOWBRAY ” and the beer comes from a ” Kamara ” pub.

You state: It should be ” Not whos “. What do you expect me to think?.
What I do think is a change of headmaster is needed as mine isn’t so brainy as he thinks he is.
I didn’t know what pukka meant as I don’t eat JUNK food like some dingles who do know.
By the way here’s one of these ‘ I think you need it.
