Albion new-boy Peter Odemwingie today claimed he is entering the best years of his career – as he was joined at The Hawthorns by Somen Tchoyi.

Tchoyi sealed his £1.5m move from Red Bull Salzburg on late yesterday just hours after Odemwingie completed his £2m switch from Lokomotiv Moscow.

But Nigeria international Odemwingie was the first to receive international clearance late last night and the 29-year-old was available for his debut against Sunderland this afternoon after penning a two-year contract with a further year’s option in the club’s favour.

And he said: “The best years are still ahead of me. I think 29 is a good age for a football player because you have realised a lot of things and you know the end of your career is coming.

“So you concentrate more and you are more organised so I think this will be a good part of my career.

“I think playing in Belgium and France and Russia and for the national team in various tournaments added something to my football.

“The three years in Russia will definitely add something to my game and hopefully I can get results with that.”

And Odemwingie, who can play as a wide midfielder, is targeting a striker’s role in Roberto Di Matteo’s team.

He said: “I think a striking role is where I can be more effective. I can definitely play on the wings as well and that’s why people put me there sometimes.

“But I have an ability to shoot with both feet and if I get a pass I can score with both feet, so I think I can be more effective for the team in that role.

“But I can create a goal as a well and if I play on the wings I can deliver a good cross and help my team mates.”

Odemwingie trained with his new team mates yesterday after receiving his visa and flying in from Moscow overnight on Thursday.
