Everton 1 Wolves 1
Saturday 21st August 2010, 5:20PM BST.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake bagged Wolves a point after they survived an Everton onslaught to launch a late raid.
Tim Cahill’s first-half opener had broke Wolves’ resistance but the visitors felt aggrieved referee Lee Mason awarded a free-kick against Stephen Ward in the build-up.
Everton bossed the game but Ebanks-Blake equalised, turning in Kevin Doyle’s cross after a quick break on 74 minutes.
It was the visitors’ first effort on target after they rode out heavy pressure but Wolves’ rearguard action merited some reward, much to Everton’s chagrin.
Steven Fletcher was sidelined with the foot injury picked up on his debut against Stoke last week, but Wolves were buoyed by the return of Doyle.
George Elokobi replaced ankle injury victim Jelle Van Damme and was quickly under pressure, as Everton attacked from the off.
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov ballooned over on six minutes, after Mikel Arteta’s free-kick was only half cleared as the hosts opened well.
The Toffees saw plenty of the ball with creator-in-chief Arteta impressing as Leighton Baines bent a 25-yard free-kick over but, despite their dominance, the hosts failed to breakdown a stubborn Wolves defence.
Jody Craddock and Christophe Berra flung themselves into last ditch challenges to halt Everton more than once, before goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann came to the rescue.
Everton worked the ball out to Johnny Heitinga 25-yards out mbut the Dutch defender was denied by Hahnemann’s sprawling one-handed save.
From the resultant corner, Cahill headed over with Wolves struggling to get a foot-hold in the game.
Matt Jarvis’ lob drifted harmlessly wide after 34 minutes, before Steven Pienaar flashed one over after excellent work by Cahill.
Wolves were on the rack as Everton probed and Bilyaletdinov drilled a snap-shot wide, before the hosts finally made the breakthrough three minutes before the interval.
Ward bundled Arteta over a yard inside the box but referee Mason – who was right on the spot – somehow awarded a free-kick outside the area.
But when Arteta’s shot was blocked, Cahill whipped the ball off Craddock’s toes and fired into the roof of the net from six yards.
The Toffees proclaimed justice was done, but it was hard for Wolves after they battled to keep the hosts at bay for so long.
For all their first-half superiority Everton created few clear-cut openings and Wolves were still in the game but needed a break going forward.
Adlene Guedioura replaced Elokobi – who took a knock in the first half – on 53 minutes and the visitors began to briefly press but failed to find much forward momentum.
Ward had to be alive to stop Jermaine Beckford after Everton broke before Jarvis fired over but, with 16 minutes left, Wolves stunned Goodison Park with an equaliser.
Guedioura challenged Louis Saha before robbing Heitinga on the half-way line and fed Doyle.
Suddenly Wolves were three-on-two and Doyle crossed for the unmarked Ebanks-Blake to stroke in at the far post, but the goal owed everything to Guedioura’s industry.
There could have been a winner, as Ebanks-Blake curled one into goalkeeper Tim Howard’s arms.
Then Saha’s header landed on the roof of Hahnemann’s net with three minutes remaining and Jarvis almost won it for Wolves at the death, curling wide in injury time.

a good result, today, we soaked up the pressure and Ebanks Blake is off and running with a good goal.
im sure there will be some moaners but yet 4 points from the first two games isnt bad for us and we just need to keep it up

Has anyone else just saw Charlie’s response on sky sports? What an idiot still thinks we will struggle? He hates us. Oh well. UTW

Great point stolen from the Toffees today. SEB is back!!!!
I haven’t seen any of the match yet so won’t comment until I have done.

4 points from 6, great defensive performance,
cant wait for the doom mongers to find excuses why everton didnt win after leading for most of the game. bring on newcastle, utw

Much improved second half performance gave Wolves a deserved point after 90 minutes. The goal by Ebanks-Blake was well taken from a very good build up.
I think we gave Everton way too much respect in the first half. MM should have the courage to let his players play – Jarvis visibly gained in confidence in the second half after having had to spend too much time defending in the first half.
When we keep the ball on the ground and keep it moving we look a different team. More of that and less aerial ball, please!!!
Win at home, tie away – I like it!!!
COME ON YOU WOLVES!!!

To be fair, I’ll settle for 5th.

Adlene Guedioura is the Mike Catt of this side. Amazing how just one man can make all the difference.
He must be in the starting XI from this point on, naturally.
we were very lucky ward gave away a blatent penalty and is allways liable get rid the man is useless.

Superb effort by Wolves. Closed Everton down quickly, defended very well. SEB ran his socks off but to little effect until his goal.
Guedioura was excellent when he came on, the best attacking midfield display he has produced for Wolves to date. I’m still not convinced Halford deserves a place on the field though. Good point gained. Now for Newcastle.

Yes wolf on cider – I saw Charlie Nicholas’s comments.
Heaven forbid they should give Wolves credit for earning a hard point at a tough ground.
He said we were lucky, we won’t score enough goals to survive, there was a foul in the lead up to our goal (which there wasn’t), he doesn’t like to praise MacCarthy (sure MM will lose sleep over that!)
Guess we shall just have to accept that we are not fashionable in the Prem!
Anybody know how long you have to be in this division before the so called experts accept you (all of whom predicted an easy victory by Everton by the way!)

Guedioura was pure class today. Well happy with 4 points from 6!

Great Performance from Craddock and Berra 2day ! Some great tackles from the pair of them ! Rock Solid !

4- never a truer word said.
This season is getting off to a good start and with ebanks scoring, it looks like he will finally be adapting to the top flight, Fletcher will be back next game and doyle is the same great player from last season.
if we can enter September with 7 points i will be a happy Wolf

Watched the game live today at my local snooker bar which has access to some euro channel. Great atmosphere in the bar, but we were lucky to be only 1-0 down at half time. Second half was much better. Jarvo is class going forward, and I was delighted for SEB in scoring the equaliser. Guedioura’s spirit and determination created the goal. He made a big difference to the balance of the team in the second half.
Have no fear Wolves! With a fully fit squad, it will be something to relish.
Up the Wolves!

Craddock and Berra awesome. Guedioura added a new dimension, hard in tackle and great in distribution.Everyone though worked so hard a real credit to the club. With Van Damme,Fletcher and Zubar to come back things look good and MM has a real problem as to who to pick and which system to play – a good problem to have. A good result at a top club. May it continue.

I don’t think we should be too concerned about Charlie Nicholas. He’s always had a problem with us and clearly is not a fan of Mick. He’ll begrudge us anything.

If Guediora and Jones can team up and know their respective roles, we could have a great midfield. Not sure they complement each other, but hey it would be worth finding out.
Well done the lads, showed fine fighting form today.

a good point against a strong team. but im going to comment on charlie nicholas comments about us. he said we will struggle for goals based on one performance when we had players out with injury. we missed fletcher but we still have hunt, kites, van damme, n mouyokolo 2 come back. but he can clearly see we wont be able to score many goals this season regardless of the players we missed to day. (for those who can’t tell i am being sarcastic)
i hope fletcher n van damme can play next week against newcastle but we can pick up the points.

champagne charlie as he was known at the gooners is’nt immune to bieng wrong as he’s comments clearly show. its that london bias coming through again, as arsenal have’nt won the title for seven years its irritating for him and can you imagine what he would have said if it was arsenal and not spurs that got beat home and away by the old gold?
oh by the way im sure we beat them 3-2 at thier place and 1-0 at the molinuex in 1978/9 or following season . so charlie joins the long list of bitter pundits who have a grudge against wwfc . just ask why man city’s rodney marsh slated wolves every chance he had just because the so called city slickers were beaten at wembley 1974.
oh well, bring on newcastle .fletcher 1 blake 1 already and kights and hunt to come back as well. doyle to score against the geordies utw

Well what have ALL the SEB moaners/knockers from last season, who said ‘get rid of him’ got to say about him now, a few people like Brummierwolves and myself said all along he missed his pre-season training and thats why he looked sluggish all season, but we all said wait till next season when he gets a FULL PST under his belt, you will see a different SEB, well he’s been excellent in the first two games he’s looked sharp,so get of his back and ‘support’ him instead. GREAT RESULT TODAY LADS .UTW

fair play to the wolves thats a great start to the season. hope we can both stay up this year and do the Black Country proud.
Everton were without doubt the better side in the first half without creating too many clear cut chances.
However the second half was another matter with Wolves getting stonger as the game wore on. The turning point for me, was the substitution of Guedioura for Elokobi (who had not done too much wrong). At end we were slightly unlucky not come away with all 3 points, but overall a draw was a fair result.

I There is a rumour going round (for years) that little old Charlie N in the 70ies was down to have a trial for us but had seven bells of pooh knocked out of him on the station so went home so probably (if true)he has some issues with Wolvo – anyway does any of you/us really care what he thinks?
Couple of observations from afar.
1) McCarthy got his tactics wrong first half.
We looked much better second half taking the game to Everton.
2) We have a major problem at left back. Neither Ward or George are up to the standards required for this division.
A good start to the season yes but these problems need addressing.

I’m not going to knock anyone but lets not get carried away here,Stoke who we just beat at home last week lost at home today,Everton got beat last week by ‘mighty’Blackburn. We are doing ok considering none of our new signings played today but I do think we are wanting in midfield,no question we are not strong enough in this department, the front players are not getting the service they need. But as I said I’m not thinking negative ,Up the Wolves.

Great result.
We survived last year as we fought for every single ball and point.
The same this year, with more quality, will only bring us good.

Good performance in the second half as at half time it didn’t look very good at all. Fans as solid as ever away. I disagree with some of you guys about Ward though … I actually think he does a decent job for us and never gave up today. Jarvis looked up for it in the second half and if only that pull had of reached SEB we could have nicked it!

Great point in the end.
Guedioura deserves a start on Sat. If we stick with 4-4-2, put him on the RW and move Jarvis to the left.
Hopefully Van Damme will be back at LB and Zubar at RB. I’d still put Fletcher up front alongside Doyle even though Ebanks scored.
A win at the weekend and it’ll be a great start.

Watched the game in a pub with euro-channels.
We looked out of depth in the first half. We were cut to pieces but defended brillantly- but were nowhere in this game. Better display in the second but still a miracle to get a point I think. Great effort from Guediora .. and can we keep picking these odd points from games like this, we should be OK !

I’ve now watched extended highlights on football first and imo in the 1st half we were not impressive at all which continued for the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half. I’d even say we were lucky to be only one down at half time tbh. Top save by Hahnemann from Heitinga’s long range exocet, he’s turned out to be a very astute aquisition by MM.
Then once we started to play with more conviction, we looked a different side. Guedioura was excellent in midfield, good sub by Mick. He was hussling, harrying and tracking back with great effect. The equaliser is owed to his persistance in winning the ball back and then picking a forward pass so well.
I do wonder whether he had a swipe at the cross from Doyle but missed, as apposed to a step over which the commentator believed. Immaterial though as SEB was on hand to expertly finish a good counter-attacking move and if not for AG’s determination to win the ball, the chance would not have been created.
Make no mistake. We got lucky when late on Saha’s header went onto the roof of the net. It looked as though Hahnemann may have just had it covered though. As the 2nd half wore on though we still got better and better imo.
Once again, imo captain Karl was very effective as the midfield spoiler once we got our game going. I don’t know about anyone else but there seems to be much more belief from this Wolves side this season. You have to bear in mind we gave Everton, who are no mugs (especially at home) a decent game while still managing to play 2 up top. Now THAT’S an improvement on last season already if you ask me. We still have Hunt, Kites, Fletch, Zubes, JVD and Mouyokolo to come back yet.
We could have won it at the death from Jarvo but unfortunately he didn’t have his shooting boots on for this one. I’m not going to have a go at him though as overall he was very effective today. Indeed, had Distin not cut out his forcefull run and cross we could have been celebrating a brace from SEB with a “tap in” as they say. For me though the signs are there that our number 9′s confidence has returned again. Watch this space Wolves fans. Anyone fancy him to net against the Magpies at the golden palace? We’ll see but if Fletcher IS fit for that one, I’d give SEB the third straight start his play of late deserves. He’ll be buzzing after his contribution and goal today. That’s a nice problem that Mick has to sort out now.
My take on the Cahill goal. I think it should have been a pen anyway, but Cahill definitely fouled Jody before scoring. In contrast, Guedioura’s tackle on Heitinga was a fair one and he should be given a start next week as #7. Farnham Wolf said but we’ll see what Mick thinks as he’s a qualified football Manager and I am certainly NOT!
Just a point to the Ward knocker (#8. Doorjam) on here, He was clumsy to give the free kick away (was pen yes), but his timing in the last ditch tackle on Beckford was superb, you surely can’t argue with that? If he’d got that wrong he was gone, so give him some credit will you!
Newcastle won’t be easy but I think another win is not out of the question. Onwards and upwards lads!
We Are Wolves.

Good to see that McCarthy had the nerve to play 4-4-2 away to a class side. I had expected a reversal to 4-5-1.
His confidence in the team was rewarded, and I think that he has just earned enough brownie points for even the thickest critics to give him slack.
Well done Mick and the team.

Fantastic result today after being under the cosh for the majority of the match, think most wolves fans thought we could come away with a point and with strong players still to come back into the fold things are looking rosey at the mo.
Great to have Ebanks-Blake on the score sheet early on in the season and give his confidence a much needed boost. With regards to Charlie ” dodgy bit of bling in me old ear” Nicholas, i cudnt care less about what he thinks, since the season started not one of the sky sports pundits have had us down to get anything from either game so far with only two thinking we’d score a goal in the game with Stoke and none yesterday, well thats 4pts and 3goals from 2 games and still undefeated so hopefully we’ll keep proving the doubters wrong…..
Bring on the toon and up the wolves!

We aint afraid of the big guns anymore! Ward, Henry, Berra, Craddock, Foley all played their socks off. Doyle was his usual self. say no more!! SEB’ goal was a good poachers goal….in the right place at the right time. Adlene….mate u were fantastic! He is wot we need in midfield….fast, aggressive, and got great foresight! Hennaman pulled of some brill saves.Jarvo had a good game fast and luved the nutmeg! Quality! Just wish at times he would drag back or do step over. I unfortnately could not go to the match but having seen the match on Footbal First yes I agree we were not good first half, but if you listened to MM press conference he took the blame for it. Second half was better and the play leading up to our goal was brilliant. Everyone of our lads work their socks off. I am really not interested in what some sky sports reporter say, none of them ever have a good word to say about Wolves anyway, did they not say we would go down last season and where are we. I was chuffed with the result yesterday, and yes it could have been down and out at half time, but our lads did not put their heads down and got their just reward. Well Done! Proud to be a Wolves fan

great result, i only saw 10 mins of the game on MOTD, which is all the time they gave, but looked a decent match.I’m so pleased SEB got of the mark early in the season as hopefully he can knock in a few more. to be honest i’m one of the knockers from last season.SEB struggled i think mainly because he didnt have a full pre-season due to injury and also because of his technique, his first touch and hold up play were not good enough at this level and he lost his way a bit.Lets hope this season he continues to proves me wrong.
I’m not MM greatest fan, but the hardest thing is to pick up points away from home and we look capable of doing it on a regular basis.w brooom got a good result as did newcastle at home, but lets see what they can do on their travels.

Great start to the season and the team look like a clinical, established unit and certainly not out of their depth. A lot of pundits are saying we will go down, but on the first two displays, there are a lot of teams in more danger than us. Good stuff! UTW!

SEB got the goal but his general play needs to improve. He often gave the ball away too easily – hence attacks fizzled out too quickly – and his distribution is poor. Plus, he hasnt got the skill to beat players one on one.
He is good as an impact sub when we need to bombard the goal.
On a whole, he is not good enough as the lone striker but gets in the way too much if we play with 2 strikers.
I love the guy for his contributions in the fizzy pop league but we have to be honest about his ability at this level.
Hope he improves and makes me eat my words though.

8) You obviously did not go to the game. IF Ward fouled Arteta – 3000 Wolves fans thought not – it should have been a penalty. Secondly you did not see the match saving tackle, unless you were watching MOTD.
Everton are a top team boasting the likes of Jagielka, Arteta, Baines, Pienaar, Rodwell and Cahill and therefore surviving a first half onslaught and being the better team in the second half, is an excellent performance and Wolves were without Zubar, Hunt, Kites and Fletcher! I thought that Jones was a bit of the boil on Saturday and Guedioura was class. As Capello was there I hope he took notice of Karl Henry and Matt Jarvis.
Just a mention lads, i read Jeff Stelling’s book recently (great read) and it talks a bit about an incident with McCarthy and Nicholas on Friday night when McCarthy took the Mick (no pun intended) out of Nicholas and Nicholas answered back going over the top about Keane and the World Cup. McCarthy threatened to flatten him and they managed to diffuse the situation in the bar before it got out of hand. I think it’s a Mcarthy issue Nicholas has got, not necesarrily a Wolves one. Great point by the way!
Good result only problemn i see is elokobi at left backk being really weak as well in defence such as Foley who I don’t think is good enough as he backs off too much needing halford in right baxck until Zubar comes backk. What I saw on sky sports and MOTD also shows wolves midfield didnt seem to be very solid until guedioura came on. He should be playing all the time as hes brilliant at breaking up the play something Henry and jones don’t do well, even though they have other good characteristics of their play. We need another striker I think.
There seems to be a pattern where Wolves allow the competition to do well early on but then as the game continues, we get better and better. Happened against Sunderland and Stoke and now Everton. maybe we are paying the opposition too much respect.
After yesterday Newcastle will be a handful but I cannot see Wolves players being as gutless as the villa players. What a disgracful episode.
So already we have one tenth of the points needed for safety and one tenth of the wins/draws we had last year (20). And we still have not played our strongest team.

I don`t do many away games, but what fantastic support at Everton. My MOM was Karl Henry, awsome display of tacking and getting in the faces of the Everton midfield. Particularly in the first half when Ward was exposed as a holding midfielder for his lack of pace and mobility.
Guideiera came on and with his quicker feet and pace to help his captain, gave us a much sharper edge in midfield. How Ward got picked before this lad is a joke.
Superb defensive display again particularly in the first half, we look a real premiership team, well worth a point from our 2nd half efforts.

Only able to watch TV coverage, but, a great point at Goodison. They won’t drop too many points at home. Charlie JockSock had us down to lose 3-0 and his aftermatch comments on SEB were disgraceful. Just remember after scoring for fun in the Scottish Sunday Morning League he was an expensive waste of space when he went to Highbury. Overrated and Overpaid. Drop him a line at SkySports.
Must comment on Ward’s late tackle on Beckford. It was out of the Bobby Moore school of timing. Whereever he plays he’s a VERY useful squad member.
8) Doorjam. Your lot did well against Sunderland, it keeps them as my outsiders for relegation and Bruce to win the sack race, although Martinez might beat him to that.
53) Wanderer in Eire. Is it the Guinness ? Point 3 I think I know what you trying to say, but, read it again ‘cos I don’t think you do. Tip. Read back what you write before you submit. Most of the rest was the usual drivel

Elokobi & Ward…. What I saw they did not do that bad at all, george cleared for us quite a few times and evary ones seen the best tackle in NATO come out of Ward!
However your always remembered for your mistakes and these two did make one or two, one resulting in a goal.
For me, I think If MM is going to play GE or SW then it should not be together, Jarvis should be in his rightfull place just infront one of them outherwise our left flank is to vunerable.
My MOTM = Adalean Guedourla, his hunger, grit & shear determination for that ball… Well he is sertainly fighting for his place in the starting eleven and sent a clear message to Mick!
Well looking forward to Saturday think the Toon will come at us with all guns blazin, I can see it being a good & interesting game!
STAND UP IF YOU LOVE THE WOLVES!

Anyone noticed that the SANDY BEACH SIDE of the Midlands win one match and they are going to win the Premiership. Funny really that lot aren’t they????

Enjoy the comments. Any unbiased observer would note that Ward and Henry were simply awful in the first half. Ward played much better after moving to left back, particularly in dispossessing Beckford, who impresses me at most as a Championship level player. Ward should be a reserve left back. Mick needs to have his confidence in Henry rewarded. He can be a solid player, is always willing to be around the ball and has a lot of grit, but he simply lacks Premier League pace and passing skills and is still too apt to panic on the ball and backpass.
Second half looked like the team I expected to see play the whole game. A draw was a fair result. We need to get 4 points from every three games that we play. Any more in gravy. Let’s get ahead of that pace with a win over the Toons.
