Albion 1 Sunderland 0

Albion 1 Sunderland 0

Peter Odemwingie became an instant Albion hero after bagging a potentially priceless winner on his debut.

The Nigeria international struck in the 81st minute, as the Baggies bounced back superbly from last weekend’s 6-0 hammering at Sunderland to open their Premier League account.

Odemwingie had missed an early chance to open the scoring, ensuring a tense afternoon.

But the victory was no more than Albion deserved for a disciplined display.

Neither side could manage a breakthrough in a first-half that was just edged by the Baggies.

Odemwingie was given the nod to start as Albion’s lone striker less than 48 hours after touching down from Russia.

And the 29-year-old had the chance to make an early impact after racing between Sunderland’s centre-backs onto a Chris Brunt through-ball, but dragged his shot wide of goal under pressure from the back-tracking Titus Bramble.

James Morrison then sent a dipping shot wide after a poor header by Paulo Da Silva, Chris Brunt headed a Morrison cross over the bar and Marek Cech sent a fizzing shot just wide.

In between the Albion chances, Cristian Riveros had a shot for Sunderland charged down by Jonas Olsson.

Brunt then saw a spectacular bicycle kick from 10 yards fly just over, after an overlapping run and cross from Cech.

The Baggies might a bright start to the second-half, with Morrison and Brunt almost conjuring up an opening on 54 minutes with a neat exchange on the edge of the box.

But Bramble made a timely interception to snuff out the danger.

With 19 minutes remaining, a dangerous Graham Dorrans cross almost brought the hosts some joy but goalkeeper Simon Mignolet did well to punch it off the head of Jonas Olsson.

But the roof came off the the Hawthorns with nine minutes remaining, when Odemwingie capped a lively debut with the crucial goal.

Gonzalo Jara picked out Morrison 30 yards from goal and he turned smartly to thread a pass between two defenders for Odemwingie, who steadied himself before prodding a shot past Mignolet.

It could even have been 2-0 with two minutes remaining, as Brunt let fly with a left-footed thunderbolt that rattled the crossbar.

Well played BAGGIES, Olsson was a Trojan in
defence, Brunt was dymamic, ditto Thomas untill he was ” Taken out “. Carson played much better having a tighter defence in front of him, did everything required of him. Odem
Wingie superb pace the lot and stuck at it the whole match. Thoroughly deserved his
    ” Scalp “.

Now Bring in Tchoyi to partner Wingie as Morrison needs more time to fine tune his fitness And lets see 4-4-2 at home. Having said that there wasn’t a under performing player out there.

I felt the first little nudge in our box and the referee would have awarded Sheffield a penalty. We could certainly do with By-line
cameras the way the assistant referee flagged for a throw-in and the ball never went off the island. Maybe the fourth official should have sent him off.

Fantastic result and also a great peformance… we bossed a team that has spent millions and millions.

Dorrens pulled the strings, the defence was solid (mainly) brunt looked excellent and Odemwingie looked a class act – his running and power is something we have waited so long for.

Oh, and Scott Carson kept us it it – again….. how many posters will be calling for him to be dropped this week ??

With Tchoi still to come in its looking good again now – we will still lose more than we win, but finally i think we may win enough..

At times and early on, we played against 12 and the sarcastic cheers said it all when we finally got a decision from the ref. The hard 50-50 challenges all went Sunderland’s way,
(Jack, how many 1/2 time pints did you ship mate, ‘Sheffield’ indeed), but later he improved. We may have found a two-footed gem in Peter Odemwingie and fast ain’t the word. Had that first one he missed gone in there would have been more space to play. As Shakespeare said, ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’.

I crave your indulgence as I intend to have one BIG moan. Many times I have expressed my disgust with the maniac that runs the Hawthorns PA system. Yesterday he stepped lunacy and noise aggression up several notches. Having many years experience of audio engineering, I would suggest the level broke the 120dB barrier and probably infringed laws on noise abatement. It was impossible to even say hello to the people around us due to the racket. I will forego the criticism on his choice of ‘music’ because it isn’t my scene. Two things sprang to mind yesterday.
If we’d defended like that last week we wouldn’t have lost 6-0.
If we’d had Peter Odemwingie playing like that last week we definitely wouldn’t have lost 6-0.

I’m a big fan of Roman Bednar but the one thing he’s not blessed with is pace. This meant Thomas was our only real threat from the wing which allowed the Chelsea defence to push right up and put tremendous pressure on the ball. With PO on the pitch they wouldn’t have dared to do that.

I’m a realist and we’d have still lost the game but a narrower margin would have kept the doom merchants in the media and amongst our own fans off the players backs.

I also hope that Ishmael will watch and learn from PO that it’s not all about how fast you run, it’s also about which direction you run in.

I’m listening to Talksport this morning. Cundy and Quinn have now been on two and a half hours and the only mention of us is when they list the ‘no hope’ clubs, ourselves, Wigan, Blackpool. Last week they couldn’t stop talking about our game. What a difference a week makes, you wouldn’t know we played yesterday because it wasn’t the result they wanted. Cundy is only interested in Chelsea and Spurs, his old clubs and Micky Quinn the same with Portsmouth, Newcastle and his beloved Liverpool. Disgustingly biased broadcasting.

Although grateful for the points I’m not getting too carried away. What’s good is that we’ve tightened up at the back, but our new striker (or Bednar) will need better support from midfield as one goal will often not be enough. I was really pleased how Morisson set up the goal, as I thought some creativity in the middle was missing. The full backs didn’t get forward as much which added to the isolation of Odemwingie, but as 1-0 was enough in the end, job done!

The Smethwick, which is where you obviously sit give the team fantastic support and have been the more vocal over the past few yrs since it became all seated but if we can get the Brummie back to the volume of singing it used to enjoy, then the two ends would complement each other and go a long way to help keeping us in the prem.

I tried to post on a couple of streams but it didn’t take, oh well.
First of all, what a crackin result. Bossed a decent side in Sunderland and should’ve won by more.
We seriously need to stop conceeding free kicks outside the area. All Premiership sides look to win them in this area and most (Stoke particularly) use this as thier main source of goal income. I hope PO or Tchoyi have a good free kick on them coz it would be nice to have a few genuine options in that department ourselves.
I know it’s early days but Odemwinge may just be the answer to the “are we ever going to replace Phillips” question. Fingers crossed on that one but on this display we definately found our main striker.
I can’t wait to see Tchoyi but from what RDM says I doubt we’ll see him against Liverpool.
The media (local media excluded) have written off the Baggies straight away this season. Certs to go down and “whipping boys” being mentioned by lazy, biased and unintelligent sources. But, biased though I am, I can’t see how this squad are being dismissed out of hand.
We have some great players at the club and I felt we only needed to fix the last pieces to the jigsaw to stand a very good chance of surival. I recon JP DA and RDM have done that and any other signings will be a bonus (although we might need anoher Striker).
We won’t win every week but we will surely win more this time round. We should score more and conceed less so this is a very optimistic (but within reason) Baggie saying WELL DONE ALBION, and Wolves and Blues to boot. I also hope the Midland sides kick on this year. Maybe some of that money will grace the second most populated area in the country.
Comisserations to Villa. I guess that shows how important MON really was, but they’ll be mid table at worst anyhow.

I’m guessing you’re in the Smethwick and I thought both ends were quiet on Saturday. I wonder if it reflected the amount of tension because despite what James Morrison said, this was a MUST MUST MUST win game or we could have been like West Ham, 5 games in without a win.

I hope your jibe was aimed at geeing up the BRE. Unfortunately the singers like myself are spread around and surrounded by the hand sitters, making it hard to generate an atmosphere. It’s much easier in the Smethwick where you’re crowded into a small section and have away fans close to respond to.

Last season a lad of about 13 or 14 sat next to me with his dad. For the first few games the lad didn’t sing but then I noticed he’d started joining in when I did, although his dad still didn’t. I commented the other day that the penny had never really dropped with me before that younger fans had never experienced standing on a terrace (Kev in Mallorca thought I’d gone round the bend) But this young lad is a good example. It’s a different culture now, if this lad was in the Smethwick no doubt he’d be singing his head off every week because everyone else is.

The English tradition of singing/chanting at games is something else we’re in danger of losing from modern day football, it’s already happening at the prawn sandwich grounds, Arsenal, Man Ure, Chelsea.

The English style of football and the unique atmosphere is what makes the PL the most viewed league overseas. The powers that be are doing their level best to ruin the football by removing any physical contact (a master class by Mr Friend on Saturday) and there’s a danger that real supporters will be hounded out of the game as well by over officious policing of the crowds.

Gripe nearly over except to add my other moan about our crowd.

There seems to be an increase in the amount of people streaming out of the ground with ten minutes left to play. If we’re 4-0 down or if we played ‘park the bus’ football I could almost understand this. Saturday we’ve just gone one goal in front, we’ve played some lovely football, we’re witnessing the debut of a player that looks capable of getting the pulses racing more than any player since Big Cyrille and I look around to see more people in the gangways than in their seats.

Do these people go home ten minutes from the end of a film? What sort of signal does it send to the players? And worst of all they push in front of you to go out but if something exciting happens they stop in front of you blocking your view.

    Rant over. Sorry.

No.44 TRBH is right. It was the same Newcastle side that we outplayed last season. A Newcastle side that didn’t lose a league game at St James’ all season, because the fans intimidated the referee’s. They weren’t that good last year, but they were loud. They beat Villa outright yesterday but the fans had the referee on the ropes from kick off.

San Sodje who has played for us and more importantly Dickson Etuhu who hasn’t. Both told him that we were a massive club that play good football. He’d been under the impression that we were a fairly small club.

This echoes what Boaz Myhill said when he arrived about how impressed he was with the clubs infrastructure. I think some of our fans don’t realise the massive steps we’ve taken in the last ten years. All without a sugar daddy.

I don’t think we had a weak link on Saturday, it was an excellent team performance. Did anyone else think that Giles Barnes seemed to grow in confidence. I thought it was his best game for us yet and his early crosses will cause problems for other teams when our players get used to them.

With Giles, JT, Chris Brunt and Somen Tchoyi we have an embarrassment of riches out wide and they are all very different in styles.

Well said! I myself have tried to post on our and their sites to try and get Wolves fans to stop voicing their pathetic comments where they’re not wanted.I must say that it’s nice to have the supportive comments of late but they are far outnumbered by the pathetic, so please it’s better we each keep to are own.

Well done baggies and important but quite easy win. We looked quite comfertable in stages and my only regret is that we couldn’t add the that tally but a great performance all round.

As predicted JM will be instrumental in our midfield.

Not for a minute did I think you’d gone round the bend mate but as you said it was one hell of a DURRR moment.
That’s one of the things I’m happy and proud about being a Baggie’s fan is we’ve got this far doing it as a club without a sugar daddy.
I’m also glad we are talking about the chanting and singing on the Brummie especially but in the East/Halford stands as well, lets join the Smethwick, make it the more the merrier and make the Hawthorns a wall of sound,so making the crowd the 12th man.
I’m very much looking forward to my 1st match against Spurs, anybody want any bakki or donkey s–t for the roses bringing back?

    A few comments :

    50. Cyrille – totally agree re the announcements, but… not sure whether it’s the same incident or not, as the announcement was being made Campbell had just been put clean through on our goal, and the announcement put him right off !

Re the singing, I have to admit it takes me some time to warm up during the game. Usually I’m a bag or nerves for the first 20 mins or so. I didn’t think it was too bad on Saturday – I’ve certainly been to games where the singing’s been worse.

Just like to comment on Giles Barnes – when he played towards the end of last season, I thought his performances where a little tentative, possibly understandably given the nature of his injury – but I thought he was superb on Saturday.

Looking forward to Anfield now !

30 cyril, might also be a good idea to just let 10 thousand fans in the ground on match days,it gets a bit noisy for you does it? ”I SAID DOES IT GET TOO LOUD FOR YOU?”and you want a bit of peace and quiet eh? be happy that we dont have vuvuzela’s here, and you want the PA guy who may have a family to feed the sack to boot

Kev, your baccy and donkey pooh comment took me back to 1947. The better off at West Brom Grammar School could afford fags in the bike shed, so there tended to be a blue haze drifting out at break times. One lad got a reputation for scrounging fags or even nub ends to roll up again in those clever machines they had then. A naughty group rolled him a ‘special’ one day, a mixture of baccy and hoss muck. I swear it, he never noticed! There again, the oval shaped Turkish ones stank like that anyway. ‘Pasha’ they were called.

I do not wish to rain on our parade regarding your “not a weak link on Saturday” assessment.

Whilst i agree (not unusual) generaly with you, there were nontheless a couple a minor irritations from my viewpoint.

    Jara
I thought some of his distribution was poor, and sometimes put us under unnecessary threat.
I certainly dont think it`s a lack of skill thing with him, more of an overly relaxed training session no urgency thing.

    Dorrans
Very un-Dorrans like first half, not as involved as we have come to expect, much more involved second half, i would question his fitness.

However some really positive signs in the main.

Solihull65. You have not read one word of my moan post and understood. I LOVE the crowd noise, the chants, the singing, especially so when the ground is jam-packed solid as it regularly was back in the 50s when we all stood up other than Halfords posh. I invite you to stand by me in the East, second tier, near the front when the PA is going full bore, (which it always is). I defy you to say it isn’t absolutely deafening and almost surely breaks every noise-level law in the country. Maybe the speaker cones have all blown out where you are. Where we are, all the supporters complain about the level of noise. IT IS FRIGHTENING and what it is doing to folks hearing is bloody irresponsible. All the idiot has to do is turn the volume down.
We’re supposed to make the noise, not him.

maybe the brummie road end need a consultant for supporting their football club, who knows? bye the way did anyone see the blackpool fans at arsenal?both old n young giving full voice, maybe we can learn from that,i remember having a go at quite a few cardboard cutouts at wembley against portsmouth sitting with no expression and i thought why didnt you all stay at home.

I know what you mean about Jara. I said to the bloke next to me that he doesn’t look quite the player he was last season. It could be the step up but it could also be the after effects of the long injury lay-off and he’s not up to speed yet.

Dorrans as well didn’t hit last seasons peaks but he’s a young lad finding his way in the Prem.

I don’t think either of them was a weak link though and I was really thinking in terms of over previous seasons there have always been at least one or two that you hoped wouldn’t see too much of the ball. Saturday I didn’t mind who the ball went to and that went for the bench as well.

Don’t want to get carried away but I think that if we can survive our opening nightmare fixtures we will do alright.

Carson never put a foot wrong. Jara was as patchy as he was against Chelsea. Cech has decided tackling is fun and is now a fine left back. Olsson is bravery personified and had a good game. Tamas ditto. Morrison had a better game this time and is getting his form back. Dorrans looks 80% at best, but it will come. Mulumbu is a dynamo of destruction midfield and can play a good pass. Occasionally gets caught in possession. Brunt was very good although not his usual ball winner in the air. Thomas looked a bit worried by the strong tackling, not so fluid as last week. Odemwingie was excellent. Where did he find the energy after the travelling he’d had midweek? Barnes uses his centres quickly. Could be very effective in this League.

    Bully

Please let me assure you that my critisizms are but minor niggles, and the two players in question are both held in high regard by myself.
Indeed i have stated often that Dorrans is destined for the VERY top, but before the seasons opener against Chelsea he was assumed as a major doubt to appear, consequently he did and was subbed relatively early, followed on Saturday an unusally low key performance.
Regardless of his impact on games you are always assured of a high energy game from him, and Saturday fell short of his normal lung bursting effort, hence my doubt about his fitness.

Again with Jara, i have absolutely no questions about his abillity, just that on Saturday his laid back approach to passing or taking on “his man” became horizontal, and better teams than Sunderland would have punished his at times sloppiness.
Just a word from RDM to eliminate the risks and i`m sure all will be well.

First, well done lads, great to see Odemwingie onboard. We have 3 points from beating Sunderland, same as last time around.

Both squads are stronger this time around, but I thought it was a more measured performance from WBA. A few personal observations:

One or two players still lack sharpness and want too much time on the ball. The day certainly belonged to Peter who put the work in! Thomas, Cech and Barnes worked the left well, but the one-sideness did concern me a little. I agree with 76 about Jara. The poorest performances over the 96 minutes were Friend and us supporters who stayed quiet for long periods during the game. The chant, ‘you only sing when you’re winning’ ought not to apply to us Baggies.

    Cyril,

I understand what you’re saying regarding the PA being too loud but the gentleman that operates the system isn’t an idiot and is indeed a family man.
You are the sense of reason usually all of the time but on this occasion I feel your disgust has got the better of you.
Do you really want a good man that has a family to feed sacked for having the PA system too loud?

    Maniac?

    79. OK Dan, you win and I’ll apologise for being too drastic. In my defence I will say this: When I sat in the Halfords, I spoke to Paul Thompson on many occasions on various subjects, one being the PA din and in those days, excess distortion caused by damage to the system. He would phone someone, it would be turned down for a while and then back up again. Repeated regularly and I even got up a petition signed by everyone around me. Total disregard for the crowd by YOUR man. We move on to now. I have complained on numerous occasions about this bloody racket, both on here and to officials, but VERBALLY so as NOT to get anyone into trouble. It went down for a while. Now it’s back to its worst and that is unacceptable. If by ranting on here something is done about it, I shall be happy as will the folks around me.
Lastly, someone made the point it takes them 20 minutes to get into full voice with singing. We don’t sing much in the East Stand because WE DON’T KNOW EACH OTHER ! The damn noise sees to that! We cannot exchange pleasantries, names, anything in fact. Ask your man why he does it. Sorry, I’m ranting again, but it is too important for him to win.
