Mixed news on injury front for Villa
Thursday 12th August 2010, 10:30AM BST.
Villa duo Carlos Cuellar and James Collins were today ruled out of Villa’s West Ham opener – but Curtis Davies and Gabby Agbonlahor could be fit.
Defenders Cuellar (hamstring) and Collins (calf) are progressing in their rehabilitation but Saturday’s game will come too soon.
It could open the door to Davies (knee) after he resumed training, with youngster Ciaran Clark the only other option to play alongside Richard Dunne, who came through the Republic of Ireland’s defeat to Argentina last night unscathed.
There was also good news on Agbonlahor (back) following his return to training.
Caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald said: “Carlos is still not outside running because of the hamstring injury he picked up.
“He’s getting there but he won’t be ready for Saturday. Curtis and Gabby are both joining in. How far down the line they are, I’ll have to assess over the next couple of days.
“James will return to training later this week. He won’t be available for the weekend though. We have injuries but you have to deal with them.
“Let’s see what we can do with what we’ve got.”
But MacDonald insists he won’t be afraid to give opportunities to Villa’s young guns, who he has managed in the reserves.
He added: “I wouldn’t have any qualms about throwing in six or seven of the lads who have done well for me over the past two or three years. Whether they would be regulars, who knows?
“If we had a spate of injuries then I would have no problems with them playing in one or two games before we got one or two back, or even see them coming off the bench to impress.
“Marc has done fantastically well this pre-season as has Ciaran Clark. But people like Barry Bannan, Andy Weimann and Nathan Delfouneso have all done very well too.
“It’s whether they get in the team for the first game. That will be my decision come Saturday morning.”

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
