Marek Cech’s Albion fitness vow
Tuesday 3rd August 2010, 10:45AM BST.
Albion defender Marek Cech has insisted he will be fit for the big Premier League kick-off despite his extended summer break.
The Slovakia international believes he can catch up his team-mates’ fitness levels in the next fortnight and be ready to face Chelsea in the season opener at Stamford Bridge on August 14.
Cech returned to the club last week after being given extra time off following his appearance at the summer’s World Cup and he made his first appearance of pre-season on Saturday, a 45-minute outing in the friendly draw at Coventry.
He said: “I was on vacation but I feel like I need to work a lot because the Chelsea game is very near, so I am happy that I am back and training.
“Saturday was my sixth day, so my fitness is certainly not top quality at the moment. But I feel that in the next week I will improve a lot.
“For sure I will be ready for the Chelsea game. I have two weeks until the game and that is enough time to get in the right physical condition.”
Cech enjoyed a dream summer as he helped his country progress from their World Cup group, before returning to his homeland and marrying his long-term girlfriend last month.
He said: “The World Cup was quite good. We got through the group and that was a big success for Slovakia.”
