O’Neill in Stiliyan Petrov warning to Reds

Martin O’Neill today spelt out skipper Stiliyan Petrov’s importance to Villa after rubbishing reported interest from Liverpool.

Speculation on Thursday claimed the Reds were eyeing Villa’s captain as a replacement for Javier Mascherano, who is expected to leave for Inter Milan, and were ready to bid £7m for the midfield maestro.

O’Neill insists he is unaware of interest from the Merseysiders, who were snubbed this week by Luke Young, but admitted interest in the ex-Celtic ace wouldn’t surprise him.

He said: “Stiliyan has been absolutely fantastic for us in the last couple of years.

“Please, don’t take this as if I’m inviting offers, I’m not – but I’m not surprised that teams are interested in him.

“It’s exactly what I said about James Milner and, of course, we had an offer.

“It’s what I said about Ashley Young and a number of players – the next thing people are saying is I’m inviting offers, I’m not doing that.

“I haven’t spoken to (chief executive) Paul (Faulkner) or (chairman) Randy (Lerner) about it, but there’s nothing in the story.

“That doesn’t mean that teams like Liverpool wouldn’t be interested in him though because he’s a top quality player.

“But no-one from Liverpool has contacted us.”

And O’Neill has heaped praise on the Bulgaria star.

“I think he’s done very well,” he added. “He’s been an excellent captain. Players will say things to him and he will voice that opinion to me. He’s not frightened to put his own opinion across and he’s not frightened to act on behalf of the players.”

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
