Wolves striker Sam Vokes has a double reason to look forward to the friendly with Leeds.
Firstly, the Wales international gets to return to Elland Road tomorrow, where he enjoyed an impressive loan spell last season.
And secondly, he can get ‘up close and personal’ with former Molineux team-mate Neill Collins, as well re-acquaint himself with his old Leeds colleagues.
“Neill was a good player here and he did really well in the promotion season when he scored a few valuable goals, so it will be good to see him again,” said Vokes.
“He’s done well since he’s been at Leeds and I’m sure like myself, he will have a good time there that will benefit him and the club.
“He was a loud character on and off the pitch so I’m expecting plenty of earache if I’m involved during the game!
“But he’s a good lad to have around because he gets people going, and he’s a leader.
“He’s also very strong in the air as he proved for us with the goals he scored so he’ll be a threat and no doubt I’ll have a few bruises!
Vokes only scored once for Leeds, but formed a dangerous partnership with Jermaine Beckford and his 10 games yielded eight wins and a draw.
“It’s a good club and they did very well to get promoted,” he said.
“When I played at Elland Road, they were getting 38,000 which is unbelievable in League One and ridiculous even in the Championship.
“I hope they can attract similar gates in the Championship because I think they’ll be strong this season as well, certainly contenders.
“They’re a very strong attacking team as well so I think they’ll cause problems – not just for us tomorrow but also for teams in the Championship too.
“It will be good to go back and see a few familiar faces.”I mainly played up front with Jermaine Beckford when I was there but, although he’s gone to Everton, they’ve still got some good strikers with Luciano Bechio.”
Vokes also has fond memories from playing under former Villa defender Simon Grayson.
“He was very good with me when I was there – I got on well with him and played a good amount of games,” he said.
“He did very well having taken Blackpool on, and to get Leeds promoted after a number of years in League One, was great for him.
“And he has a good squad there too now.”
Vokes is expecting a tough test at Elland Road as Wolves look to build on a warm-up programme of three wins in four.
“This will be Leeds’ last game before the start of their season so they’ll be ready for us,” added the 20-year-old.
“I think it will be a very hard game for us too – just like Tuesday’s was for us.
“Pre-season has been hard like it always is, but I think it’s been more focused on the games, so it’s been good to get some run-out.
“On a personal note, it was good to score a couple of goals at Walsall. Hopefully I can take that on and score more goals.”
