Ryan McGivern join Walsall on loan

Walsall have completed the signing of Northern Ireland international left-back Ryan McGivern on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City.

The 20-year-old comes to the Banks’s Stadium to further his first-team experience, after making 14 appearances for Leicester in the Championship over almost a full season on loan in the Championship.

McGivern has also spent time at League Two club Morecambe, but will now try his luck in League One and rejoin his former Manchester City team-mates Clayton McDonald and Paul Marshall at the Saddlers.

And the three could be in the team for Walsall’s next friendly at Port Vale tomorrow.

Manager Chris Hutchings said: “We are delighted to have Ryan on board. He is another young lad who we have been monitoring for some time and will be a welcome addition to our squad.

“We know what he is capable of and he comes here keen to gain experience.

“He certainly has pedigree behind him and we are grateful for Manchester City allowing him to come here and continue his footballing education.”

Very good signing in my opinion. I was just saying to my dad that we could do with a couple of hungry youngsters who have had experience at a Premier League club, and this guy fits the bill.

For years we’ve been begging for the club to take on the younger players, of a decent calibre, rather than the golden oldies who have been out for one last pay cheque! Ok, this guys on loan, but we have some promising youngsters at the club now, Marshall, McDonald, Smith, Westlake, Deeney, Taundry, Grigg… a couple of lads that have just signed pro-contracts look promising aswell. Hutch and O’C seem to be building something which looks very good on paper. If they have the know how with the tactics of the game is the slight doubt that I have.

I’d say we need another midfielder now. An old head, with experience, a leader…. Lee Carsley would have been perfect. We also need a striker if (or should I say when!) Deeney goes. I’d take Marlon King if there was a chance he’d come and play at Walsall. Didn’t Hutch coach him when he would have been at Wigan? Just a thought!

This comment from a Leicester fan:
Thanks Walsall, and congratulations on securing a young player who ranks alongside Junior Lewis as probably the worst ever to wear a Leicester City shirt. I hope you guys can teach him how to mark, tackle, head and/or pass the ball – something our coaches failed miserably at last year. He definitely WON’T be missed!!!
