Rachel Yankey’s pride at 100th cap

Centurion Rachel Yankey has revealed her pride after leading England to within touching distance of the women’s World Cup.

The Arsenal winger won her 100th cap as England beat Turkey 3-0 in their World Cup qualifier at the Banks’s Stadium last night.

Hope Powell’s side clinched top spot in Group Five and a place in the play-offs with victory after goals from Yankey, Ellen White and Jess Clarke sunk the Turks.

And Yankey – who captained the side – admits reaching her ton and becoming only the second Englishwoman to do it was a proud moment.

She said: “It’s very special, you think back to the fact only Gill Coultard has done it and it means a lot because there have been some fantastic players who have played and retired.

“I’m still playing and for me to be second is really special. I couldn’t ask for much more and it was nice of Faye (White, captain) and Hope (Powell, boss) to let me walk out as captain.

“It was a nice touch.”

Coultard’s record of 119 caps in now in sight, but Yankey insists she just wants to help the side qualify for the World Cup in Germany next year.

The 30-year-old said: “I’d love to reach it but whether I do or not is another matter. Getting to this stage is a big honour but I just want to play as many games as I can.

“If we can get to the World Cup it’s another tournament on the biggest stage.

“Rather than chasing Gill’s caps I just want to concentrate on getting into the team.”

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
