Albion poised to snap up Boaz Myhill

Albion were today poised to end their goalkeeper search by snapping up Wales international Boaz Myhill from Hull in a £1.5million deal.

The 27-year-old has emerged as the red-hot favourite to become the Baggies’ new gloveman with the club closing in on an agreement to sign him.

Hull head of football operations Adam Pearson confirmed the Baggies lodged an official bid late yesterday and the clubs are believed to be close to agreeing a fee.

He said: “We’ve had one firm offer in and that is currently being considered.

“He’s a player I’ve known a long, long time and have got a lot of time for. He has a very special part in the club’s history so it’s not an easy decision.”

Myhill has not sought a move away from Hull and was happy to stay despite relegation to the Championship, with his family settled on Humberside.

But he now accepts he will be sold to bring in much-needed funds to the cash-strapped Tigers.

A move back to the Midlands suits all parties for him and his family.

His mother is from Llangollen and from the age of one, the California-born shotstopper was brought up in Oswestry where he initially played as a midfielder, while his wife is from Birmingham. He also played for Shropshire schools at cricket.

Hull are under pressure to raise money to ease their £30million debts and Myhill is among their most saleable assets.

Pearson said: “The fact we owe a lot of money to other clubs puts us under some pressure to raise cash this summer.

“All we’ve raised so far is the cash off the sales of Stephen Hunt and Steven Mouyokolo to Wolves, so it does put you under pressure to look at the deals.

“The position of the club is such that we have to consider them carefully.”

Myhill, who former boss David O’Leary allowed to leave Villa for just £50,000 in 2003, has not yet talked personal terms with the Baggies so the move is not expected to be completed before the weekend.

The former Villa reserve, who climbed from League Two to the Premier League with the Tigers, has been on the Hawthorns transfer radar for several years and was added to a summer shortlist of potential goalkeeping signings, as revealed by the Express & Star in June 2.

Myhill made it on to a shortlist drawn up by goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely that included Preston’s Andy Lonergan and Lee Grant of Sheffield Wednesday.

The Baggies targeted Myhill actively after failing to agree a fee with Preston for Lonergan.

    One word – uninspiring.

We need first XI players because the current XI won’t keep us up in a million seasons. We’ll be battling Blackpool for 20th.

If he’s able to get in the 1st team ahead of Carson (who should definitely remain 1st choice) and can pull off some performances like he did for Hull against Spurs last season then we have a very good goalkeeper on our hands.

I think he’ll be good back up to Carson though.

My mate says that Beattie is due at the Shrine for talks over the weekend……apparently any way!!

A talented keeper by all accounts. It concerns me that he lost his place to Duke at the back end of last season, but at 27 he’s a baby in goalkeeping terms and he’ll hopefully keep Carson on his toes.

Have I missed something? Is Jeremy Peace our new manager?

Peace doesn’t decide the transfer targets. I’m astounded by how many people seem to think he does.

    2. Myhill is a much better keeper than Carson and this is excellent as it will improve our first team. Carson will be back-up now and it has been proven for years that Carson is not a Premier league keeper. Lets hope we can complete this deal after Lonergan and Grant turned us down.

I have heard that Beattie will come in over the weekend as he is talking to Blackburn today and if he signs our 25 man squad is in place.

As usual JP will be happy with spending next to nothing and us fans will have to watch a huge scrap and relegation.

Carson’s club captain and RDM’s already spoken of signing back-up so I think you’ll be disappointed come 14th August. Carson’s achieved more at 24 than David James had, I think we need to be patient and get behind the lad.

Also, why would JP be happy to see us in a relegation scrap?

Premiership club= higher turnover= higher salary for chairman and increased value of club and shares owned.

The argument he wants us relegated carries no weight whatsoever, whatever your thoughts on his motives.

The blooper football programmes are full of his errors. He will never be a top class keeper, David James commands his area and has never played outside the top flight since he has 19.

    A couple of points:

    1) This is a very good signing and will provide excellent competition for Carson. I think we’re going to have two exceptional, young keepers on our hands and as Cyril correctly points out, quite the selection headache for RDM. It’s a nice headache though.

    2) If JP is so tight, why would he sanction a 1.5 million outlay on a goalkeeper? The transfer drama is just about to unfold, believe me. Fasten your seat belts, August is going to be quite the ride and we’re extremely well positioned to take advantage of it.

    Are you serious?

Beattie could probably do a job for us but has proved to be a bit disruptive at Stoke.

Mido has failed miserably since shining for Spurs in his first half dozen games.

Zaki had a great half season before the goals dried up then went missing altogether.

Sometimes you need to sign players with character not just names plucked out of the air.

Wages wise all three of these could prove expensive mistakes.

    Boaz for no.1

Take away his England performances, how many high-profile, costly mistakes has he made in an Albion shirt? Mistakes that are solely attributable to him?

I can think of about three- Arsenal at home when he dropped a cross, QPR away last season. He shouldn’t have headbutted Chopra against Cardiff. He really hasn’t made that many. I challenge anyone to come up with a big list of them.

Compare it to how many World-Class saves he makes, which people seem to have come to expect rather than to applaud.

Scott Carson’s 24-years-old. To put it into perspective, David Seaman won his first England cap at 25, David James at 26, Nigel Martyn at 27. Even Ray Clemence has suggested he has as much potential as any England keeper he’s worked with.

Don’t get me wrong, the lad has his weaknesses but he’ll only get better, unless the moany brigade ruin him. He’s still a baby in goalkeeping terms.

Lots of Carson-critics on here. If we were to get rid of Carson, who (realistically) would you replace him with that’s better?

I’m not going to come on here under some daft pseudonym pretending to be a baggies fan.

I hope that you’re going to buy some decent outfield players in the next three weeks. It would be a tragedy in the first season in years when all four midlands teams are in the premier league and your board aren’t prepared to make a fist of it and get their wallets out.

This must be as about as exciting as when we signed Hahnemann (who in hindsight has been outstanding) last season – it’s like “yeah, sensible to get him in but this is not a signing that will keep you up”.

I’m sure this post will receive a barrage of criticism which you’re entitled to write, but do you honestly think you’ve got a team to stay up in it’s current form and do you believe the West Brom management team have got the inclination to try and stay in the premier league or are they not prepared to risk financial security to give the fans what they want?

You’re our bitterest rivals but event I’ve been frustrated by the apparent lack of ambition in the transfer market.

42 – Thanks for your honest opinion. In my honest opinion, we still need some strengthening work. We all know that our main priority now is a goal scorer. If we learnt 2 things from our last PL campaign, 1 was that we need to stop the silly defensive mistakes (something I believe we have addressed) and the 2nd was that we need to take our chances in front of goal.

We can score almost at will in the Championship, but the Prem is cometely different and we MUST buy a goal scorer.

We have a very good midfield who will create chances, but if we don’t get someone inwho can finish them we will really struggle.

In summary, if we buy a goalscorer, I think we’ll stay up. If we don’t (like our last PL campaign) we’ll get relegated again.
