Steven Mouyokolo’s three-week plan

Wolves’ £2.5million signing Steven Mouyokolo today gave himself a three-week deadline to achieve full fitness.

The towering former Hull centre-back returned to full training on Monday after recovering from an ankle injury that cost him three weeks’ training.

Mouyokolo is now set for an imminent Wolves debut against either Cheltenham tomorrow night, Leeds on Saturday or Hearts next Tuesday as Mick McCarthy’s squad step up their preparations.

And the 23-year-old is relishing the chance of challenging regulars Jody Craddock and Christophe Berra.

“I’ve got just over two weeks to get myself ready,” said the France-born stopper.

“I was back in training on Monday, and, after being out for three weeks, I was very happy. I don’t feel any pain in my ankle anymore. But it will take as long as it takes to get back to full fitness – whether that’s one, two or three weeks.

“I’m ready to play in any games if the gaffer wants me to. I need to get some minutes to build my fitness up. Training is good but you need to play games as well.

“It’s very important to know my team-mates on the pitch. When you’re on the sidelines, you can’t help, and, although you’re part of the squad, you’re passive.”

Mouyokolo admitted it was a shock to return to full training but he insisted he can’t afford to rush his comeback.

“At one point this week I thought I was up against Real Madrid because the tempo was so fast, but that’s normal when you come back from injury,” he added.

“It’s made me tired but it’s good because it means I’m getting my fitness back.

“It’s about doing it gradually and just working as hard as you can to get your fitness back. It’s a long season and so there’s no point coming back too soon.

“I wasn’t injured at Hull last season so when I came in the treatment room Stephen Hunt was asking me what I was doing there!” he joked.

“It’s even more frustrating when you’ve moved to a new club and want to have a really good pre-season.

“It’s been tough this week, but I need the work.”
