Mick McCarthy’s signings admission
Thursday 29th July 2010, 10:58AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today admitted 11 new signings was too many last season as he sympathised with the promoted clubs.
McCarthy splashed out for Kevin Doyle, Nenad Milijas, Ronald Zubar, Greg Halford, Andrew Surman and Stefan Maierhofer last year.
Marcus Hahnemann arrived on a free transfer, while Michael Mancienne and Segundo Castillo came for the season and Adlene Guedioura and Geoffrey Mujangi Bia arrived on loan in January.
But he missed out on players such as Sami Hyypia, Scott Dann, Roger Johnson, Aaron Mokoena and Tommy Smith.
This time he went for quality over quantity and spent £18m on five permanent signings plus Mujangi Bia until January.
Now he admits it was too many 12 months ago.
“We signed 11 over the two windows last season, and it was too many actually to integrate them all,” said the boss.
“You end up giving them half a game at a time. But we needed them because we had to build the squad.”
A year on and Albion, Newcastle and Blackpool are having trouble attracting permanent signings.
McCarthy believes getting the right players is more difficult than naming a 25-man squad.
“We’ve got another five weeks to name the squad so I don’t think that’s causing any grief,” he said.
“It’s the start of the season that’s more important. I can’t see any of those who haven’t signed players suddenly signing five or six.
“That would be hard to integrate them.”

Maybe it was but hindsight is a wonderful thing. At the end of the day he kept us up and may have unearthed a couple of gems on the cheap. So hey, don’t beat yourself up Mick!

I agree with this but we stayed up . Whats to say if we signed 4/5 quality players instead of qauntity that we woudnt of got a few injuries and got relegated. We have a good squad now and qaulity is defo more important this year the qauntity. Would like mancienne back think he has got a lot of potential and will be a england international in the future.

I don’t think anyone has quite grasped the consequences of the 25 man squad yet. Gone are the days of ‘fighting for your your place’. We are now down to ‘one in one out’. If we sign Mancienne, who do we leave out? Stearman? Mijlas? Guediora?

totally agree with wallheath wolf, the main thing mm is you kept us up.

Some of the signings didnt work out, but for the most part we didnt break the bank for them, so it doesnt matter too much. I also think even though some of them didnt work out most of them contributed too our survival except for maybe Andrew Surman, Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, Stefan Maierhofer and Segundo Castillo. Considering Bia was injured, thats 3 signings out of 11 that didnt contribute to our survival.
Most people will say Halford didnt do anything but his long throws got us a few goals last season, and evidently helped secure a few extra points for survival.

MM is quite right, but when you come up, its about getting as many in as possible, without breaking the bank, and see what sticks.
When you stay up, its about getting a handful of quality players in, and getting rid of the dead wood.
Worked out just fine for us, we found some gems for a decent price, and the failures we didnt spend too much on.
Personally I would like to see Guedioura playing the holding midfield role, I think he is perfect for that.

Dont think we made too many bad signings last season certainly found on or two gems. You have only got to look at what the baggies are trying to do on the cheap this season to see its doomed

“It is what it is”.
We are still solvent.
Still in the Prem.
More quality players.
Look attractive to other players.
Some come and some go.

Billyraff – each squad can have as many players under 21 as they like in addition to their 25. – so its not really a case of 1 in 1 out. Vokes and Bia will not be included in the squad as they are under 21, but they will still be able to play.

Some work some don’t Same goes for the players we already had.
Craddock, Foley, Henry, Jarivs and Keogh (for a bit) all stepped up a gear.
As we know E-banks, Iwwelumo, Stearman, Ward Didn’t
Halford, Hoff, Surman and Castillo were a bit of a flop but Zubar, Hannaman, Guedioura, and Milijas were absolute bargins. Plus Doyle.
It happens to every club Even Man U and Chelsea get there fair share. Important thing is that Mick can identify who’s not working and get rid. Something he does really well.
I’m sure 1 or 2 of our new signing may not work but others will.

the ruling of the 25 player squad was taken im guessing aimed at the larger clubs who have 35+ players, but it is going to affect us so called lesser teams harder than you think, 25 squad players, say you need 2 players per position giving you 22, if you then start to pick up a few injuries it could become very testing for some squads! but take j woodgate at spurs for an example, in my opinion this guy is finished anyway but… he is now out for atleast 4 months so redknapp cant really name him in his 25 so where then is the motivation for the player to fight to full fitness knowing he cant play in remainder of season anyway?
i agree with the 8 homegrown players rule but even that is stupid to say the least cos if you read the ins n outs of it all players only need to have been in country playing for 2/3 yrs, so they could be from any nation anywhere they dont even need to speak any of the home nations language, so how on earth this can be described as “home grown” is totally beyond me!
Another example especially with the lata that this world (country) is going nuts!

We didn’t break the bank with journeymen and passengers and stayed up so job done!
This put us in good stead this new season to attract the right kind of player to improve the squad.

Dave – I’m aware of that, I have my 25 written down in front of me, and Volks & Bia ain’t in it, and the 25 are all over 21. All I’m saying is that anyone new coming in will mean that someone else isn’t going to get a game till at least January, unless they go out on loan, and there doesn’t seem to be alot of that going on right now. I predict alot of activity in August, as players all over the country realise that they are not going to be in their club’s 25. May work to our advantage as Chelsea, Man U, Man C etc shed players who would not normally consider the likes of us, but that in turn will mean that a few of our players will have to toddle off to the Championship (or even the Albion).

The most important thing was we stayed up. Get rid of Ward. Need to sign Shorey and a striker.
Sholud have no probs beating the ‘tesco’club down the road, 6 points!
For the drop defo, Blackpool & ‘Tesco Baggies’.

10)JJ It’s all about opinions and I agree with most of what you say, but, I cannot see how you can describe Milijas as an absolute bargain. He had a few bright moments, but, he also had some very poor ones and a few absolute shockers. Even his shooting and passing let him down in the end. That’s why he spent most of the season watching.
Unless there is a big turnaround in his form/attitude, and I really hope there is, and he starts playing like a Premiership midfielder,I wouldn’t even name him in the 25.
10) Ward didn’t? He was playing all last season with a bad injury and could not turn properly, see I think in the circumstances he did very well.
We could definitely do with getting rid of the Hoff, Hill and Halford and then probably bring in one more?
As for an assessment of the squad:-
Goalkeepers – No team has a better pool of them in the Premiership
Defence – We have two top quality right backs, Craddock was quality last season and this is his swansong, Berra did ok and will get better, Stearman has got to cut out the errors, Mouyokolo? , Van Damme should do the job
Midfield – Quality wingers, Henry and Jones had good seasons, more to come from Milijas and then we have Guedioura and Edwards
Strikers – Doyle is class, Fletcher should get double figures, SEB – we may see a resurgance, Vokes immense promise
All in all things are looking good. Let’s aim for mid-table and then start on the new stands!

11- crowfish – I think the naming of the squad lasts untill the next transfer window, so players injured could be ruled out of the 25, and then renamed in the 25, in january. That gives a little incentive to get fully fit. This would mean, tottenham could leave Woodgate out untill january and then bring him in, so he wouldnt miss the whole season.
I did agree with you about the homegrown players rule, but ive also read that they have to have been playing the 3 years when they were under 21, which would mean that allot of foreign players would be ruled out. Most players who have played in england while they are under 21 are english, but even this is a problem, as many big teams are poaching foreign youngsters for their youth teams.
With this new 25 man rule, am i right in saying once the Jan tranfer window starts you can name a new 25 man squad ?
If so then i think we should keep the squad we got apart from the donkey Hoff.
Im glad we’ve gone buisiness early this year but there is a possiblility we will miss out on quality players on the cheap, as once the season draws closer there will be alot of movment from the big teams to trim there squad.
Still, i think we will bring in Mancienne if we get rid of at least one player but if we dont it wont happen. SIMPLES.
In my oppinion theres only one relegation place to worry about, with albion and blackpool taking up the other two.
This year is our REAL make or break for wolves.

MM well done as I for one beleive MANCIENNE is by no means worth 4mill.
His first touch is poor and when defending he as looked a little clueless, his tackles are a little mistimed too.
For those who think we will struggle are in for a nice surprise as I beleive we will comfortably stay up and finish higher in the league. Our first 6 games are all point’s gettable. It is important that our season starts well during this period as we can then kick with the gained confidence.
So I for one look forward to the season and hope team starts on the front foot as it could reallyset us up.
Wow nothing like a bit of confidence is there lads!!
I must admit i tend to be abit over cautious when making predictions and maybe see too many negatives, but if i could spend more time with the likes of brummierobwolves my glass could be half full.
The truth is many of you are in for a shock. The quality of the Prem last season was below par, the Baggies and the Geordies are better than Pompey, Hull, and Burnley. I know none of you will want to admit it, but the truth is we have some real dead wood in the squad who will take some shifting. I think Mick has taken a gamble in recruiting or cherry picking as he would say from the relegated clubs. Time will tell how we get on this season but some of the over optimistic comments on here are the reason why our fans are laughed at by other clubs. In truth i am preparing for another battle against the drop.

We have a great squad for a 4-2-3-1 formation. And i’d have keogh as 1 of the 3… creative player and looked great 1st half of the season.
MM has built a squad that, all being well, will secure us comfortably.

At least we can attract quality players to our club unlike the steptoes who really are scraping the bottom of the barrel, face it steptoes you are a small time club with no money and no hope.

18. Mick is correct,if Albion or Blackpool fans suddenly think 5-6 signings are going to happen, it wont!
I think by mid-April, Blackpool and Albion will be as good as gone and Wigan, Newcastle, WestHam, Bolton, Sunderland and Wolves will be fighting to keep away from the last place but I blieve we will finish the season in 14th.
I think we all know this transfer blockage will break soon, very soon. It’s really down to overloaded clubs like Manchester City (35 players and still looking to sign more) Chelsea, United, Spurs etc etc. They can’t afford to have players sitting in the stands in their designer suits listening to their ipods. The players aren’t going to walk away from fat contracts. Loan deals will be the order of the day, but, this is back to the bad old days when every club in the Premiership seemed to have a Chelsea player on loan.
In my opinion this is not healthy.
The only consolation seems to be that it will suit clubs like us and certainly not those in European competitions.
The Championship, Div 1 and 2 clubs are going to get some right bargains….and maybe Mancienne will be acquired for £3million

17- oh i see my bad, i didnt realise u could name again in jan, thats much better, not a bad ruling then that, still think the home-grown rule is screwed up though something seriously needs to be done, as we will just get repeat performances at international level like we did a worldcup. There just aint that much british quality about at moment because of the big import of foreign players (even kids) over last 5 or so years! so it will take atleast this time again before we see any result giving us a massive dip in international class players in meantime!! but same old england! dont do nowt until its broken!! UTW

just wondering, does anyone know what players actually come under the home-grown category?
no20 Man from Laramie, I am with you,in that I think we are at least a couple short on quality. But to be fair to Brummie Rob he called it correct two seasons ago when he said we would win promotion, even when we had that bad spell. He also called it right last season when at the start of the season he said there were at least 5 teams worse than us.So from a Wolves perspective the time to worry is when Brummie Rob says we will get relegated. It has certainly been so far so good.
Yes eleven was certainly too many. I guess it was a case of fear in some ways, get as many in as possible to save us from the drop which happened, but most of the eleven did not contribute in a positive way. We now find ourselves stuck in a frustrating position, unable to go after another quality signing like o’Hara for instance because nobody wants to sign our dead wood.

26 Gloucester Wolf. Okay, I’ll have a go, without checking record books, here’s my split.
Homegrown
Hennessey, Ikeme, Murray(if named) Foley(?), Elokobi (?), Craddock, Henry, Jones, Kightly, Jarvis, Ebanks-Blake, Hill, Halford,Stearman,Edwards
Not Homegrown
Hannahman, Zubar, Berra, Mouylokolo, v.Damme, Ward, Fletcher, Doyle, Hunt, Guediora, Milijas,Keogh, Hoffmeister
Under 21s Vokes, Geoffrey Bia, Hemmings, Batth etc etc
Have I missed anyone? The ones I may be wrong on are Foley (did he do 3 years at Luton?)and Elokobi (3 years Non League ?)
Obviously, Mancienne and David Beckham would both be homegrown if they sign, although the latter may have to wait until January with his injury problem.

Not bad!!!
But I don’t think Elokobi is & I think Berra(Hearts), Keogh(Leeds) & Fletcher(Hibs) are.
Becks certainly is, but you’re right I wouldn’t include him in the squad til Jan, perhaps we could loan him out to a championship club to get him match fit………………
