Mick McCarthy looking to 4-4-2
Wednesday 28th July 2010, 10:00AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has re-iterated his desire to revert to 4-4-2 again this season.
McCarthy has played the formation in all four friendlies so far, only reverting to 4-3-3 for the last 20 minutes against Charleroi.
The manager stuck with four in midfield even though Reading effectively played five last night, as Wolves went down 2-1 in their only defeat so far this summer.
Wolves played 4-5-1 for virtually all the second half of last season and it worked, as they lost just five in 15 games to secure safety before reverting to 4-4-2 for the last two matches.
McCarthy said: “I’d like to be able to play 4-4-2 more. If we’re all organised enough and the players work hard enough in certain roles, we might be able to do it. Playing 4-4-2 can be a problem when they’ve got an extra man in midfield.
“But going to 4-3-3 is no problem for us either – we can cope with that and make those changes when needed.”
McCarthy insisted his players are now adaptable enough to slot into either formation.
And midfielder David Jones feels he and Karl Henry can cope in the middle, even if they are outnumbered.
He said: “Playing 4-4-2, it was good to test ourselves against three in the middle last night and we knew from looking at the players they’ve got that it would be hard work.
“Myself and Karl have had a good understanding for a couple of years and if us two are playing in there, we knew what each other is doing, so it’s always good to play with him.
“It was the hardest test we’ve had so far in terms of tempo on a good pitch.”

In the old days it would have been “madam” – but now it’s more likely to be “babe (or round these parts ‘bab’)”, “love”, “duck” or “chick/chuck”, writes Louise Jew.
