Liverpool bid for Villa’s Luke Young

Luke Young is today contemplating a shock move to Liverpool after Villa accepted a £2.5million offer for the out-of-favour right-back.

Villa manager Martin O’Neill confirmed, after last night’s friendly victory over Walsall, a bid – from the Merseysiders – had been accepted and it was now in the player’s hands to decide if he wanted the move.

Despite being a firm favourite with claret and blue supporters, Young, who has also interested West Ham and Sunderland, was one of six players made available for transfer at the beginning of the summer after O’Neill was told he must adhere to a sell-to-buy policy this summer.

But should the 31-year-old decide against a move to Anfield – where he would have to battle with England’s first-choice Glen Johnson for the right-back slot – he will join the rest of the squad which heads out to Portugal later today for this weekend’s Guadiana Cup.

O’Neill said: “There has been an offer from a football club for Luke, which he is mulling over. If it doesn’t materialise then he would also join us on the trip to Portugal too because he needs to play some football soon.

“We will see how that develops. He is having a think about it. If he chooses to go that’s it, if he chooses to stay then he needs to start playing because with the new rules I have to name a 25-man squad for the Premier League.”

Reds boss Roy Hodgson is a long-term admirer and reportedly tried to sign the former England international last season when he was in charge at Fulham.

Young, who still has three years to run on his existing deal, arrived from Middlesbrough for £6million two seasons ago and enjoyed a fine first season at Villa but his start to the last campaign was marred by injury.

The player failed to re-establish himself as a first choice, making just 14 Premier League starts – many of them out of position at left-back.

But it did nothing to diminish the esteem in which Young is held by fans, who gave him a standing ovation when he came on as a substitute in the final game of last season against Blackburn.

Well he fits the criteria for Liverpool.
    He is injured.
    He is out of favour.
He will have to battle for an established position at Liverpool.
He is not someone who will spoil things and score goals for Liverpool.

Hmm, sounds ideal as he does nothing to alleviate our desperate requirements of either a LB or Attacker!

You’ve got to be winding me up!!!!

2.5million for a bloke who has been injured more than he has actually played… This is the first signing of ‘Roys’, more like this and the big named players at Liverpool will be begging to get out of the club, never mind saying they want to stay!!!

Interesting comments from Liverpool followers??? Maybe Woy isn’t the manager that Liverpool need. I mean, against all odd’s, he’s just persuaded Gerrard and Torres to stay, persuaded Cole to move to that vile city and signed a couple of up-and-coming kids for peanuts while allowing a moaning, whingeing Argie to leave and getting rid of the deadwood left behind by the Fat Waiter! Yeah, Woy’s doin a bad job there!

Then again, perhaps Woy sees what 40,000+ Villa fans see, but our manager doesn’t. An experienced defender, who can play anywhere across the back 4! Hard in the tackle and good in the air! Has pace! Reads the game well! Good communication! Reasonable wages! English! Ex-international! And a damm sight better DEFENDER than the male model who currently flirts around at right back.

So yeah, I suppose you’re right and we should keep him!!!

Agree 100% with Psycho Villa. And even MON’s biggest fans will admit Young is the best right back at the club by a long way.

You moaning Reds fans have no idea what you are on about.

Young did absolutely nothing wrong. He could not get his place simply because the Villa manager likes the defenders to hit the ball long every time (i think every fan in the country must know that by now.) And he also prefers to play a big centre back at right back to give us an advantage when defending and attacking set pieces; he did the same with Mellberg before.

I am sure Luke Young will suit Hodgson’s passing style of football and do really well up there.

Respect PsycoVilla. You are 100% right. These armchair scoucers have obviously never seen Young play. If he keeps fit he will have Johnsons place in a couple of months.
