Djemba-Djemba fails Albion medical

Albion today dramatically called off their bid to sign Eric Djemba-Djemba after the midfielder failed a medical.

The 29-year-old was due to sign for the Baggies from Danish club Odense in the next 48 hours, after flying to England to join Roberto Di Matteo’s squad.

But problems revealed by medical tests have prompted Albion officials to call off the deal.

Djemba-Djemba missed the end of last season with a knee injury, although it’s not yet known whether the same problem has scuppered his move to Albion.

A Baggies statement said: “Albion have decided not to pursue their interest in Odense midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba.

“The Cameroon international travelled to England to meet the Baggies earlier this week but, following medical tests and further talks between the clubs, Albion have decided not to proceed with a deal.”

The former Manchester United and Villa flop had joined Albion’s players for their friendly defeat at Doncaster last night, watching from the dug-out as they lost 1-0.

Albion will now turn their attention to other transfer targets, with Di Matteo admitting that adding to his forward line is his most pressing transfer concern.

Ishmael Miller led the line in last night’s 1-0 defeat at the Keepmoat Stadium, but the Baggies boss still wants two new strikers to supplement his squad.

The Hawthorns hierarchy are willing to sanction two new forwards, but are currently playing the waiting game as bigger clubs decide which players can move on.

Di Matteo said: “Of course, it’s a big concern to us. We’re very much working on that behind the scenes but it’s difficult.

“Everyone is after a good striker but it’s a difficult task.”

The medical results are bad for the player, but not many Albion fans will be upset by the deal being stopped. The ‘former Villa flop’ tag doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, and although he’s said to have done well recently, with all due respect, looking OK in the Danish league and making an impact in the Premiership are probably world’s apart. If the club stopped trying to sign failed players on the cheap, with poor health and dodgy knees, the fans might feel a lot happier. With a promotion and increased season ticket prices, you’d expect an effort to bring in better quality than this.

Need Man City and a few others to decide who their 25 will be and then we can move in…. there will be quite a few “names” becoming available over the next week or so.

Talking about efforts to sign players,a couple of things emerged from last night’s game.It may have only been a friendly, but against the mighty Doncaster,at one end we couldn’t score a goal, while at the other end it’s been said that Zuiverloon and Mattock had a ‘nightmare’,yet again being turned inside out by a lower division club’s strikers. Can we please stop trying to bring in more midfielders when the alarm bells are ringing for strikers and defenders?Surely someone at the club can see what’s obvious to everybody else?

Very good point Cannock, Moore needs to go. He is no better than his brother who is currently residing in the Conference, I believe. He has no enthusiasm, nor desire.
£850k-£1m to a CCC team I reckon. Make a loss on him and accept it then use that money to bolster our wage structure. Nor is he a fan of certain management staff (this I know for certain due to an odd twist of fate in March)

As for EDD, we will indeed never know how he would have turned out, I wasn’t against signing him by any means and could see some potential in him, he may have flopped for Man Utd and Villa but lets face it they are both much better than us. I don’t rate Heskey but I still think he would work wonders at WBA. It’s all about the stage they perform on. Much like the aforementioned Luke Moore.

I can see this as a small glitch for our CB’s. I was talking to a work mate, who is a Gunner, earlier this week and named all of our defence.

Meite/Zuiverloon/Ibanez/Mattock/Jara/Tamas/Olsson/Cech and he rated them all, and especially surprised that Ibanez had moved to a team of our stature. I look forward to seeing how Pablo turns out. He could be a gem. From the insider perspective maybe these guys don’t seem like top players but it’s become apparent that they are all well known names and a great deal of experience and reputation amongst them. I feel we just need to strengthen our forwards. I really hope Miller comes through this season, he deserves it.

Sorry but I thought it was impossible to fail a medical at the Hawthorns nowadays…. Is this just an excuse because Dan Ashworth woke up this morning and relised it wasn’t all a terrible dream and this signing was actually going through…… or is it just me being cynical.

BoingBoing666- Do tell all, we like a nice bit of gossip!!

So our scouting network identifies EDD as a back-up holding midfielder- JP’s fault.

The player fails to sign for £1.85m after failing a medical- JP is berated for pursuing free transfers.

RDM and DA both remark that they are still pursuing players, and have funds to do so, but the transfer market is slow- which is obviously JP’s fault.

Is he to blame for the public arts centre funding deficit as well?

Ok who tripped Eric up on his way into the medical room? Would not have been a convincing signing even though he would have assisted in keeping our yo-yo status.Fed up of waiting for decent players now. Matteo claims it his hard to get a decent striker. What he meant to say was that there are no players out there who he can get on the cheap, pay poor wages and won’t wave their arms about like Rocco. If some of our players who worked hard to get us up are not good enough for the PL then surely the same can be said for the manager. You only have to look at Megson, Mowbray and possibly RDM. Yes RDM got us promoted but my 5 year old son would have probably managed that…Come on boys !!

I think the problem is that not many CCC clubs that could (A) afford that sort of fee, could (B) afford to pick up his wages. I do however agree that strikers and a left full back are essential now.
We can make do on the right with Reid, Jara, Tamas and Zuiverloon but Mattock is a concern. I don’t mind him I just think his head is in the wrong place due to his run in with the law.
Nicky Shorey would be a stella buy. If we can get him I would be chuffed. Beattie is still my favourite striker to get in and one head turning loan deal would do it. Santa Cruz would be top of my list.

Why are so many people comparing Koren with Djemba-Djemba? They would’ve fitted completely different roles. Koren would’ve been competing against Mozza and Dozza which is probably why we let him go, we had a surplus of ‘artists’ from the Mowbray era, RDM has already spoken of finding more balance.

Agree with your point on Koren. He wouldn’t be my choice for a holding midfielder – interesting that Blackpool have yet to confirm where they stand with him as well. But if they do bring him in it will not be as a holding midfield player. Balance is the key here – the squad limit necessitated the need for Rocco to move on.

Some interesting points you bring up and sadly you might be right about some things. I too fear a lack of goals, it’s easy for our 4-5-1 to turn into 4-3-3 in the Championship when we have so much possession, but I worry it’ll become a rigid 4-5-1 in games where we just can’t get a foothold, which is probably why this striker could make or break our season.

There don’t seem to be a surplus of good target men. I always liked Benjani’s ability to hold up the ball, but he has the same question marks as Heskey in terms of goal threat and I assume he gets paid a fortune.

Carew’s a great player, he was almost unplayable when they beat us 2-1 at our place. But again, probably unlikely.

We missed out on that Berg to PSV, he looked a promising player.

So it looks like Beattie or an unknown from the continent.

Would Marc-Antoine Fortune be an option? Celtic have just bought another striker. RDM won’t know much about him but Ashworth will.

Regarding the panic over the lack of new signings i will refer to the interview i witnessed theo other day with sir Alex Ferguson.

The gist of his feelings were thus,

The transfer market this season has been stagnant due to the new rule relating to a 25 man squad. I have 32 pro`s at the club so before i can release anyone i need to sign someone, but if i sign new players my squad will go upto 32+ players, meaning i need to loan or sell 7+ players and that thought is preventing me from going out and signing prospect players. If at the end of the transfer window i still have players at the club i cannot name in my 25 what do i do with them??

So at the moment we are only looking at players who will definately make our 25, and that means transfers are taking more time, which is the same story for most Premier league clubs, which has resulted in a stagnant transfer market.
Even my chairman does not want to be paying wages to players i cannot even play!!

Now if the greatest manager of our time can see it and is having his own problems with this transfer window i think we should all take a chill pill and leave our chairman and his team to get on with it.

I think to many fans play on football manager and think it works like that in real life, news flash is doesnt!!

    Rant over.

At the start of this transfer window JP stated we would not be signing players for big money but rather spending money on wages. Anyone hoping for a signing over 3.5 mil will be waiting a long time. Those who think we need a striker for a goal threat are also missing the point. We will be playing 451 so in this type of formation your goals will come from midfield. A forward is needed to hold up the ball and have the intelligence to make chances for the midfield runners…. we will sign 3 players between now and 31st august.

I am starting to become more concerned by our lack of activity, the only player signed who wasnt here last season is Pablo and he has not played regularly for 18 months and the pace is much quicker in the Premier League than Sapin, if we do go down he will be like a financial leadweight on 40k a week.

Giving new contracts to Dorrans, Brunt, Mulumbu etc is pointless when they already have years left on their current deals and a huge bonus if we survive. That money should of been spent on improving what we already have.

If JP thinks we will survive spending 800k on 4 players and Dan Ashworth and RDM feel that Djemba-Djemba would of kept us up, we are bang in trouble.

    34. Bomber, one of the most sensible posts I’ve read in the last three days as these boards have resembled something from looney tunes.

Another reference point is Man City. They have a squad of almost 40 players at the moment, go and take a look online. Something has got to give at the top with the big boys and then things will start to trickle down.

The point is, and JP and DA identified this a long time ago, given the new rules, you don’t have to pay big money for players because quite a few are going to get ‘cut’ before August 31 and will be free agents (this somewhat resembles what happens in the US in American Football) and others will be loaned out.

An overriding objective of these new rules was to increase the number of English players playing in the Premiership, however, whether by default or as a secondary objective it’s also going to lead to more parity between teams especially this season as clubs get to grips with it all.

I think August will be a very active month and things will go to the wire i.e. midnight on August 31.

The point is, be patient. Good things come to those who wait.

I can see the point you’re trying to make re: recouping half the money we spent, but we only lost Gera and Phillips that summer, both for free.

You may be referring to the previous summer when we sold Koumas, Kamara and McShane for circa £13m, but in the same summer we also bought Hoefkens, Barnett, Pele, Morrison, Brunt, Beattie and Slusarski for roughly the same amount.

I’ll accept JP’s prudent, but I don’t think he’s entirely to blame, we’ve had chances to stay up. Of the money we spent last time the majority was wasted, with hindsight not purchasing a holding midfielder or a replacement to Phillips killed us.

That’s why it’s important to get the right players this summer and if needs be, wait for them rather than churn out millions on players for the sake of it. Unfortunately a symptom of waiting is the moany brigade spend the summer on here demanding we sack everybody and rip the backbone out of the club.

You’re probably right actually!! I hold my hands up……in shame!! I was associating it with the year before when he actually left. In fairness, Moore formed part of that deal.

If we go back over the past 7/8 seasons though and list the players we’ve bought, it does come to a fair whack (even if you consider those sold) and wages are where most of the club’s money goes.

I think your original point was that Wolves have shown more ambition than Albion. Would I be right in saying the Fletcher buy takes Wolves’ spending since reaching the Prem last year to around £25m?

We’ve spent a very similar amount if you add this summer’s to 2 summers ago’s buys. Birmingham have spent less than either of us last summer and this and are arguably much better off than both.

Also we spent our way out the Champ to an extent (parachute monies) and Wolves got their way out on a shoestring thanks to Mad Mick.

I think it just gives credence to the argument that’s it’s far more to do with how you spend money than what you spend it on. Which is why I think we’re holding out. I think you will see us spend money before 1st September.

The truth is our respective clubs have approached this summer very differently in terms of transfers. Wolves have bought their intended targets quickly, a move made slightly easier due to purchasing from clubs who have been relegated and need the money. That is not a knock at who you have bought just a statement of fact, the quality of those signings will be decided in time.

Albion on the other hand have decided to wait until the market moves and to see what shakes down, a gamble? Definately!! But a gamble that could pay off, we could attract a player previously out of reach, or we could be left with a last minute panic scramble, who knows?

Also JP has no doubt saved the club a great deal of money in wages, another reason why many clubs are not buying early.

The truth is only time will tell which transfer policy has proved the most successful.

Because of the 25 man squads it’s even worse than the Chelsea episode a few years ago when Abramovich moved in and then promptly loaned half his millionaire players out to other Premiership Clubs. The best goalkeeper in the Premiership last season (Hart) is looking like spending most of the season on the bench unless he’s loaned which looks highly unlikely. No wonder England blew it in South Africa.

42 NYBaggie. You make some good points , but, I don’t see there being as many free agents as you seem to be suggesting. Sure, there will be some contract cancelled by mutual agreement, but many of the high wage players who don’t make their club’s 25 will want to see their contracts out….or get loaned out. When the Club’s get used to this new system it will iron itself out, but not this year I feel.

The fact that the best goalkeeper (Hart) in our division last season will either spend most of the season on the bench or be loaned out again, which looks highly unlikely. This is very concerning for English football and epitomises the problems of South Africa.

    59. Bertie, good point and let be more succinct.

Many players will be allowed to leave on a free or for a nominal transfer fee, as clubs don’t want to be paying someone 40K a week just to do nothing as they’re not in the 25 man squad.

A few contracts will be mutually cancelled as you point out and the loan market will be more active than ever.

This is in line with JP and DA’s thinking regarding paying higher wages, you will save on transfer fees this summer but pay it out in wages as you try to attract the bigger names.

As Baggies fans we all want to be like the Wolves. If only we lived in similar bubbles we too could imagine that we are the biggest club in the country let alone the Midlands.
Our Spanish International defender (last cap November) couldn’t possibly be a statement of intent. However Hunt and Fletcher for £10m, now thats a statement.

Your making an irrelevent point re what we as two clubs spend. Its like saying i should have bought an audi RS8 like my neighbour has rather than my vw scirroco. The truth is i havent got the money, and maybe just maybe my car will still get me to where i want to go, and his RS8 will break down.

The fact is we will spend what we spend, and with JP in charge we will never do a Portsmouth, hand on heart Wolves fans cannot say the same regards the Liverpool fan running your club.

The Liverpool fan running Wolves has unveiled plans for a 40,000 seat stadium, which btw will be paid for without affecting the budget for transfers and wages over the next 3-4 years. By comparison WBA gets a new coat of paint. Nice!
Also Fletcher was bought to partner Doyle so we dont have to “park the bus” like you lot will this season. Nice to see RDM taking tips from a manager that can actually cut it at this level though. Every little helps.

Bomber you talking extremes. No one is suggesting JP do a Portsmouth and end up in their state. But surely with all the money you have earned over the last five years with Premier League money(your fans keep reminding the Wolves this is your 5th season) you must be able to spend more than the £800k on Tamas.
I’m sure you will add a couple more but has less than £10 mill ever kept a team up in the PL. The odds arent great are they.
Your analagy regarding the cars, I dont see how you would have less money than your neighbour as explained above.

I could be wrong but I think Brum will have some problems defensively this season.
Last season they had Hart (on loan) who made being a goalkeeper look easy tbh didn’t he? This season though, although they have signed Foster from Man U, imo Hart is 10 times the keeper he is.

We shall see but Hart stopped a lot of goals going in last season. This season…we’ll see.

    63. You are talking utter cobblers.

Firstly, after an independent audit, it was announced that Albion were 7mil in the red. Wolves were not in debt when Morgan took over and he has signed a contract to invest 30million of his own money into the club, according to sources he has spent 4mil so far as the club have been self-funding.

a VW Scirroco is a good comparable for Mulumbu, Dorrans and maybe Brunt, you have a few cars that failed a recent MOT and proove that they can step up such as Morrison, Giles Barnes and Jerome Thomas (who publically stated that he really wanted wolves to be his new owner) and you have a few old fords such as Carson, Zuiverloon, Cech, Bednar who just wont make the journey and players such as Reuben Reid, Mattock, Moore, Miller, Cox, Wood, Reid who I would just scrap right away.

They say ‘distance lends enchantment’, but it can also lend common sense. NYBaggie scores a bullseye. We shall not pay large transfer fees, but we shall pay big wages. So said JP months ago! Why? Because he is astute and realises that the bigger clubs won’t keep players on huge salaries who aren’t in the squad. The sales will be on shortly in the Prem. Our best players have already been promoted in readiness for the high salaries we shall pay.

Firstly nice to see you use your own now infamous name. As for talking cobblers, you proved my point, if we are so much in debt why would we be spending as much as what Wolves are?

I love the over confidence of Wolves fans like you, it means the Baggies can never lose. If you finish higher than us and beat us twice in the league it will be nothing more than you thought would happen.

    However………….

Oh and then you look like what so many fans throughout the country think you are, fans with inflated egos, get a grip.

You might not ‘park the bus’ this season with 2 strikers. But ultimately wasn’t this your strength? Being solid and difficult to beat? All of a sudden Karl Henry’s going to have a lot more work to do and ground to cover in that midfield, and if you’re opening games up, 75-year-old Jody Craddock is going to have to learn to defend one-on-one on the halfway line, instead of having 6 players within 10 yards of him so all he has to do is win headers in his own box.

    Southern

Yes, Birmingham last season. Reading a few years back.

I hope you’re right. I was just using them as an example that it can be done and it’s how you spend as opposed to how much. Lots of people seem to think it’s as simple as getting the cheque book out.

    laughingwolf

Don’t pretend you’ve seen any of these players play. You’ve proved in the past your opinions of us are based on here’say. 12 months ago your fans were worried about Craddock and Henry and talking up Kightly and Foley, so you have no idea which players are up to the job. We’ll just have to see.

Re: debt, it was down to estimates on player write-downs that will have been largely eradicated through getting promoted again, so we are most likely no longer in the red, or certainly less than we were.

Dorrans, Brunt, Olsson, Ibanez, Jara and Mulumbu are class players who can easily make it at Premier level. I don’t think the Wolves have anyone better than the above (with maybe the exception of Brunt and Doyle).
Morrison has already proved he can cut it in the Premier and was in demand by Premier clubs before he was (luckily for us) injured.
Barnes and Thomas were excellent last season and have points to prove, I would back them to shine and the latter to score against Wolves.
Carson is a young and talented Keeper and will probably earn an England cap this season.
Bednar has already scored goals at this level and with a sturdier backline and midfield can chip in with vital goals.
Cech has a point to prove but on his day he is a decent fullback same will apply to Zuiverloon, although to a lesser extent.
Steven Reid is a quality player and would be in the Blackburn 1st team if they had a half decent medical staff.
Miller looked laboured last season as he had not fully recovered from injury. If we get a Miller like we recieved off Man City he will do a job up front.
Moore, Mattock and Reuben Reid I agree aren’t good enough. Not even good enough for the Wolves or Blackpool (1st teams).
But Cox and Wood are young and your comments on these two alone show how little you know about the players your commenting on.
Cox is a strong centre forward, he may be a poor mans Alan Shearer but a Shearer like player nevertheless. He plays with heart and muscle and he shoots from the edge of the area (which we may need this season). He also played well in the attacking midfield role last season.
Wood is a very exciting prospect and has a very bright future indeed. He was the lad who made Cannavaro look stupid and almost scored a cracker against Italy in the World Cup if your struggling to place him.
He is a big strong centre forward and I’m sure he will be important for us in the future.
This is what we have at the club. It looks like Myhill may be signing and I really hope Beattie will also to add a potent goal threat (from himself and from his hold up play). As I write this out I can think of only one player I would cherry pick from the Wolves. Doyle. Hand on heart he is the only one.
The Albion are not the same team that went down last time, we have strengthened. I agree that we do need at least a striker (or two), keeper and ideally a left back. Any other signings would be a bonus.
Despite JP’s takeover, he is a shrewd businessman and will realise that a Premier League club is more valuable than a Championship one. So he will be looking to stengthen the squad further to give the club the best chance of survival.
So I guess you’ll get to actually watch this team in action for the first time next season. Only when we’re stuffin you 6-1 at the custard bowl it’ll be too late won’t it?
