Deadlock in Michael Mancienne race

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has admitted his pursuit of Chelsea’s £4million-rated utility man Michael Mancienne remains deadlocked.

The manager insisted he knew nothing of the reported transfer request lodged by Mancienne and reiterated he must sell players before he can buy.

Wolves are prepared to pay up to £4million to land the 22-year-old but, as McCarthy admitted, they still must shed some of his 28-strong senior squad before they can add to their six summer signings.

Regarding the latest twist on Mancienne, McCarthy said: “I guess people should ask their manager Carlo Ancelotti whether we should read anything into the transfer request.

“And if I was reading anything into it, I suggest he wants a transfer. But that’s the first I’ve heard about it.

“I’m not looking at signings at all at the moment. We need to lose some players rather than take anymore in and certainly won’t do any more business unless anyone leaves.”

Asked whether he had spoken to Ancelotti, he added: “I don’t like my name associated with stories when I don’t know anything about it but when someone asks for a transfer, they want to go.”

To complicate matters, Mancienne has now been linked with a move overseas to either Malaga, Sevilla and Sporting Lisbon as the race to sign him hots up.

It’s not yet known if Chelsea will sanction his sale, as another one of their defenders Ricardo Carvalho wants to be reunited with his former boss Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.

But, despite the new 25-man squad rule, Chelsea appear to have no interest in keeping Mancienne.

The former England under-21 international has previously stated his desire to move to Molineux, but it’s not known where the player stands on switching to the continent.

And McCarthy appears no nearer to shedding any of his unwanted players.

Andy Keogh failed to get off the bench for the second successive game in last night’s 2-1 defeat at Reading.

But the Wolves boss stressed that was because he wanted to give time to youngsters Sam Winnall and David Davis.

He said: “I felt for Keogh because he travelled but let’s give the kids a chance because 10 minutes in that environment means more to them than him.

“Keogh was injured last time and I had 22 players, plus we’ve got games on Friday, Saturday and Tuesday.”

Surely with the Football league season less than two weeks away there will be some movement of players very soon.

Keogh, Halford and Hill are obvious targets for teams in the Championship. Perhaps we’re holding out for too much money. Keogh is worth less than £2.5m lets be honest. Halford isn’t worth the £2m we paid last summer. And Hill is probably gonna go for next to nothing given his age and lack of football in the previous two seasons.

I don’t like the way it sounds like Wolves are trying to save up money to buy Mancienne? We aren’t going to receive much cash with the rubbish we’re trying to offload, and the chasing clubs are in a strong position to negotiate. They know Premiership teams really cannot afford to be paying wages to players who are ineligible to play – consequently the potential fee is tumbling down.

I hope Wolves don’t have to stick with what they’ve got – as the squad lacks depth in the holding midfield role, and also lacks creativity in attack.

still dont think we should sell keogh – that loan deal would have been the best.

As i keep saying please please please do not sign him he is not worth 4 million we will only be paying 4 million because he is from chelsea! If he was from anywhere else he would be 2 million at most… We could do a lot better than Mancienne for 4 million!

As for getting rid of the fringe players

    Matt Hill – realease

    The Hoff – 1 million

    Keogh – 1.75 million

    Halford – 1 million

Vokes – loan to get the experience which is needed for him!

see but with just them 5 players i just said there is about just under 4 million and getting 4 players off the wage sheet to bring better players in!

Get rid of the deadwood, and get a couple more in…

The squad is looking good people, its going to be another rollercoaster of a season, but I think there will be a few more ups than downs this year, especially with the tesco’s to wind up!!!

    1) I agree that we are not going to get much money for the 4 but you cannot tell me that Keogh is rubbish. He has once again been called up to the Irish squad and I think that an experienced manager like Trappatoni is a better judge of player than you are!
Creativity in attack??? Creativity in the main comes from the midfield department and for that we will rely on Jarvis, Kightly, Hunt, Jones and Milijas!

I think we have all learned that the MMMs keep their cards close to their chests and we don’t really know what is going on away from the media spotlight.
No doubt about it the transfer market has severe constipation at the moment, but, with new squad rules creating surplus players on high wages it has to change quite soon. Mancienne will become a Wolves player and Albion will get their loan signings !

Mancienne is a novice at defensive midfield role and lacks some of the attributes reqired to succeed….excellent touch being the main one. Keep pushing the name Anthony Annan of Rosenborg as he is the finished article. Was told ‘big clubs’ were after him but only name I’ve seen linked is Newcastle. Worth making a move as I’m sure he’d rather Premier League than football in Norway.

Surely wolves have all the cards. Most teams outside the top ten cant afford him or dont need him. Those in the top 10 think he is not good enough for them. Lets be honest how many teams in the premiership have asked about him this or last season. Every club will panic
trying to buy or sell soon as
they have done very little in the transfer market. We have done most of our buying so no panic.

If his preferred destination is Wolves, then I’d have thought he’d have consulted MM before he bunged in a transfer request.

In today’s market – with plenty of surplus players – it would be odd for someone to request a transfer with no destination in mind.

I conclude that either MM is being cute, or Mancienne has an understanding with another club.

Totally agree with 6…Keogh, along with our stronger strikers, will be a great asset to Wolves.
He is a playmaker, team player, understands the game better than most, and for mine will excel this season playing in behind Doyle/ fletcher/ & possibly Ebanks.

If we have to lose 3/4 players from the 25, Hill, Halford,Jones, Elocobi, would be high on my list, and I would move Craddock and Henry into the training/ skills coaching admin staff.

Big mistake to get rid of Keogh, International and runs his socks off for the club, in fact was the only player that understood and could keep up with striker Doyle last season

I can’t say that I am too disappointed that we lost to Reading, which after the first couple of friendlys against rubbish teams, will bring us down to earth, and stop experimenting with teams we will not be fielding on day 1.
What an insult in taking Keogh, a good player who is not one of McCarthys favourites to reading, and not giving him a run at all, despite being outplayed by a Championship team. Another run at least would show the Manager that Keogh is needed in the 25 this season.

Remember all, before we signed fletcher, Moxey caterogically denied that we after him.

He said he was talking to lots of players, and he knew fletch was not one of them, a week later he pops up!

    A smoke screen me suspects!!

Manc showed against liverpool and arsenal in shackling gerrard and the whole arsenal midfield when we lost 1-0(95th min goal) that he can play that holding role.

13 – How do you know we were “outplayed”? Don’t read too much into pre season games, Newcastle lost 6-1 to Leyton Orient this time last year and then went on to win The Championship, they’re to get fitness levels up and that’s all, MM is not experimenting with teams, he’s trying to get a SQUAD of players in peak fitness ready for the season.
As for Keogh, MM has explained the reasons for not putting him on last night, it was because the kids would benefit more for the run out with the 1st team squad.

12 Alan Morris. can you expand on the bit about “moving Craddock and Henry into the training/skills coaching admin staff”
Are you suggesting that Karl Henry is no longer needed as our holding player and that Jody Craddock should hang up his boots and paint brush and start a bit of pen pushing administration ?
Quite like Keogh, as it happens, but will most of us forget (Mick too) when he “ran his socks off” and lost us the game in injury time against Arsenal ? Bet Doyle understood that !

By my reckoning we can keep Keogh and still get in Mancienne as long as we get rid of Hill, Halford and the Hoff.

The squad would look something like this:-

    1) M Hahnemann
    2) R Zubar
    3) J Van Damme
    4) K Henry
    5) C Berra
    6) J Craddock
    7) M Kightly
    8) D Jones
    9) K Doyle
    10) S Fletcher
    11) M Jarvis

    12) W Hennessy
    13) K Foley
    14) G Elokobi
    15) S Mouyokolo
    16) R Stearman
    17) A Guedioura
    18) N Milijas
    19) D Edwards
    20) S Hunt
    21) S Ebanks-Blake
    22) A Keogh

    23) S Ward
    24) C Ikeme
    25) M Mancienne?

    Plus U-21s S Vokes
    G Mujangi Bia etc

Surely that squad would ensure a third straight season in the Premier League for the club…

    15. If you had listened to the game you would have heard that we were under the cosh for most of it. Kebe danced rings around Elokobi, really disappointing that that left back slot is still not right. No need to panic though as the championship sides are further on in their fitness and it showed (or rather sounded). Fletch sounded pretty good though and Jarvis.

We would struggle to beat Reading away in a league match even with our best 11.Player for player we are probably not that much better than them. That Icelandic midfielder looks a good midfielder to me.And Kebe and McAnuff are not a million miles away from Jarvis.Kightly and Hunt of course are injured. We are better up front and I think Jody and Berra are key to our chances of survival next season,so we missed them last night.Overall we still lack quality and that is why we are third favourites to go down.We survived last season largely down to organisation and team spirit. It will be hard to replicate it next season.

Four years into McCarthys reign and I´m beginning to trust the guys methods and his nous, something once I was sure he didn´t have. I visibly flinched when I heard he´d succeeded Hoddle but I´d take my hat off to any guy who got us into the Prem and could keep us there.
Everyone and his uncle, more or less harangued him for his supposed favoritism towards the likes of Ward and Keogh but see now, he´s ready to let Keogh go and Ward won´t be far behind as better players make their presence felt.
It´s a cut throat biz alright and I for one think MM knows when to let go and when not. Of course we won´t get 2.5M for Keogh and likely as not he´ll end up in the Championship but MM is a good guy, he´ll do his best for the players he likes but knows aren´t up to his/prem standard.
By the way, check out La Liga in Spain. Have a look at who´s the longest serving manager in that league. MM may very soon be up with the top eight in this country and if he keeps us in the Prem, I for one won´t complain

16 – Keogh didnt lose us the game against arsenal, after his shot, the Arsenal players still had to pass it past our entire team, before they scored. Would it have happened if we still had 11 players? I personally dont think so. I think Keough would be a decent back up for a number of attacking positions.

I hope we sign Mancienne as i feel theres still allot to come from him, considering his age.
