Young Villa side held by Chasetown
Tuesday 27th July 2010, 9:15AM BST.
There was no lack of action as Chasetown and a young Villa team served up a hugely entertaining goalless draw in a pre-season friendly at the Scholars Ground.
Villa found the net in the 14th minute last night when Connor Taylor jinked the ball past goalkeeper Ryan Price but the flag was up for offside, while Gary Birch shot wide for the Scholars three minutes later.
Harry Forrester was next to go close for the claret and blues with two shots in quick succession, but Chasetown were far from outclassed.
Chris Slater impressed in defence, ending an attack by Barry Bannan just past the half-hour, before Ramone Stephens combined with John Branch well down the right but Ellis Deeney was able to counter their efforts in the run-up to the break.
Substitute Michael Drennan was the main dangerman for Villa in the early stages of the second-half, forcing Price into a fine double save, while both sides made wholesale changes in an effort to break the deadlock.
Two new faces were brought on by the Scholars in the shape of Matthew Cohen and Andre Gonzalez, with the side continuing to display lively passing and attacking football.
In the closing stages Birch and Dave Egan both went close, but were denied by Villa substitute Durrell Berry and goalkeeper Ben Siegriest.
