Mick McCarthy’s selection headache

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has backed rejuvenated Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to give him a real selection headache up front.

Ebanks-Blake went close to scoring in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Charleroi and was a stand-out performer, having moved to the right in a 4-3-3 formation for the last half hour.

McCarthy said: “Sylvan was terrific – he just came and occupied that right hand side and did it well. He’s come back looking very sharp and very fit. He’s working hard at it and he knows that by his own standards, last season was a poor one.

“He looks like he wants to rectify that, which is great for me.

“It means we’ve got great competition in there and it’s a nice problem for me to have.”

Kevin Doyle’s opener meant all four main strikers have now scored in pre-season and McCarthy is relishing the battle for places.

He said: “It’s great to see centre forwards scoring goals – they thrive on that.

“The strikers are scoring goals now and we’ve got good competition for those positions.”

Winger Geoffrey Mujungi Bia missed the game against his parent club with a tight hamstring.
