Albion trailing Eric Djemba-Djemba

Albion are attempting a shock deal to sign former Manchester United and Villa midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba from Danish club Odense.

The 29-year-old was reportedly on his way to England today to discuss a shock return to the Premier League, where he endured nightmare spells with United and Villa.

The Baggies have identified the Cameroon international as the man to compete with Youssouf Mulumbu and Steven Reid for defensive midfield roles in Roberto Di Matteo’s side.

Djemba-Djemba made just 31 league appearances in four years in England from 2003 to 2007, ending his Villa stint on loan to Burnley in the Championship.

But the Cameroon international has gone some way to repairing his damaged reputation during two years in Denmark, starring for Odense in both domestic and European competition.

Now the midfielder has been given permission to miss Odense’s game against Randers tonight, with reports in Denmark claiming he is on his way to England to seal a surprise move to the Hawthorns.

Odense coach Lars Olsen said: “Eric will not be involved against Randers because we have allowed him to travel abroad.

“It’s for personal reasons which we cannot say more about.”

Djemba-Djemba previously struggled to make an impact in English football, after joining Manchester United in 2003 from French club Nantes.

The £3.5million signing made 39 appearances in all competitions for United before joining Villa for £1.5million in 2005, but again found first-team appearances tough to come by.

After a loan spell with Burnley and a stint in Qatar, Djemba-Djemba joined Odense two years ago.

News of his possible arrival comes after head coach Di Matteo admitted his “worry” at the Baggies’ struggles to sign players for the new season.

Former Spain international defender Pablo Ibanez is so far the only addition to the team that won promotion from the Championship.

The Baggies boss said: “As we get closer to the start of the season you start to worry a little bit, yes.”

I think its a absolute joke trying to sign him, we might aswell offer George boeteng a contract at least he is proven and experienced in the premier league… think peace needs to get his cheque book out and buy some good players I know we have never been big spenders but to spend £800,000 on what looks like being 4 players is a complete joke.

Djemba Djemba for West Bromwich Albion? Are we desperate, we already have players that we can’t off load. Luke Moore, Joe Mattock, Rueban Reid, Gianni Zuvierlon these players are not Premier League players and Djemba Djemba has proved this not just on one ocassion, but on two ocassions with top flight Premier teams Manchester United and Aston Villa. Not even Burnley wanted him, but West Brom do? Surely we can do better than this?

In the summer we have been promised experience, quality, a bit of money spending.

Eric Djemba-Djemba. ARRRGGGHHHH! He has experience of playing in the premiership – and looking out of his depth. Failed at Man U (Perhaps lack of a run in the team there), failed at Villa, who then took ages to loan him to Burnley and sell him on abroad. Now with Odense in a league of flam.
He has quality – nice car good clothes etc – not much I can remember on the pitch.
The only money spending here will be on wages as this would be a free transfer. I’d play for nothing and without the attitude when I get to warm the bench or get subbed off.

This is possibly the most desperate move I have seen us make in recent years and I would be straight down the bookies if we signed him. We don’t need him in our midfield.
Was the Boating training with us and rumour supposedly to make us less hacked off about this potential move.

If Dan Ashworth thinks this player should even be on our extended lists, he should go now. One Luke Moore sulking on 15-20k per week is enough.

Hoping it’s a slow day in the office with nothing to write about for the press but this rumour is everywhere.

Can Dan Ashworth come out and quash this before his reputation is completely ruined.

a} hes had chances and not proved himself and
    b) if hes that good why is he free and no one else wants him.
What we need is a “proven” front man and not a maybe. Moore has proved they are hard to move on.

I am worried too RDM. We always seem to move on but we never move up.

At this moment, with the players we currently have, how many teams are going to be worse than us over 38 games? I can only think of one possibly two. Not a good sign is it?

Saw the boys on Sat against the Gas. We may have passed them off the park but we’re lacking match winners, with only Dorrans to rely upon.

I don’t think Djemba-Djemba would be a signing any of us would’ve hoped for, but there comes a point where we have to trust RDM’s judgement.

I would suspect he’d be used as a back-up to Mulumbu and Jara as a holding midfielder. Pre-season would suggest RDM wants to play with 2 holders and if Mulumbu or Jara (who is also probably first-choice right-back) gets injured, that leaves S Reid who has experience of playing the role. In truth, that’s probably not enough.

Finally, it seems that when we sign a good player, credit goes to Ashworth and/or RDM. So when we sign somebody that nobody wanted, why are people so quick to attribute the signing to Peace? At least be consistent.

Peace has said he’ll spend the money, I’ve no doubt we’ll spend a fair bit before the end of August, but there’s no point signing the wrong players for the sake of it. Have a bit of patience…..

I would rather we try and get in good players on the cheap then waste money like Wolves.

Where have all these short-sighted people come from?

This board has provided us with a stability we lacked for years, a scouting network to be proud of, a youth system that’s producing England youth internationals year-upon-year after years of producing none, a sporting academy, our own training ground and modern facilites that rival the top-flight clubs we’re competing with when all financial experts tell us we have no right competing with them given we’re virtually debt-free.

Ashworth was responsible for some or all of: Jara, Olsson, Tamas, Mulumbu and Ibanez amongst others.

We get linked with (i.e. nothing official) one player, and some of you want them all sacked?!!!

Who are these fans who seem to think that spending £10 million buys you instant success. We spent £4.7m on Valero and I bet they were the first to bark on about how much of a waste of money he was. I too beleive he was a waste of money.
The basic facts of the matter are that we are Albion, and unfortunately we can’t convince Beckham or Gattuso to sign for us.
If these fans have been going to the Hawthorns for more than 6 years they will be aware that we had to ride much bigger storms than signing Djemba-Djemba, memories of scrapping with Walsall to stay in the 1st Division and battling against Swansea and Port Vale to get in it spring to mind. Ask your Dad boys.
Fair enough, 3 weeks is not much time to get players in but I do beleive we will get an extra Keeper and two Strikers in. An extra defensive midfielder would be an unexpected bonus IMO. The new rules mean there is more than likely going to be a rush in the final week where a lot of surplus talent is hurriedly ushered out of some big doors and into smaller ones. These clubs will probably prefer thier players to still be gaining Prem experience and teams like Baggies (who play flowing football) will be top of thier list. Don’t forget RDM still has Chelsea connections.

In terms of Albion, you have to feel sorry for RDM. Peace has got to come up with serious cash – £10m minimum – to improve the squad. The midfield is decent, the defence probably needs improving and you definitely need some new forwards! In my humble opinion Nick, to suggest we rip apart the backbone of a club on the basis of media speculation of a signing is absolutely absurd, and anyone who believes in that is in my view, beyond redemption.

For example your initial post, which suggests you know little of Ashworth’s role at the club. Did you know he was in some way responsible for the signings of Jara, Olsson, Ibanez, Mulumbu and Tamas? How is it justifiable to sack him on the back of media speculation?

I understand where Warren (29) and TRBH are coming from. JP in my opinion has done a great job in his tenure often with limited funds in comparison to those clubs up the road and beyond with sugar daddy chairmen or companies who have plundered the football club into debt.

I also agree we have not seen Eric play for quite a while.

First time failures Forlan and Bramble are the exceptions that prove the rule.I just cant see Djemba-Djemba is going to be one.
I think perhaps RDM wants to add depth which means potential subs and fringe members to the squad.
Signing him on 10k a week as a second string squad player probably makes some sense.

However this is the fourth time we have approached a Prem campaign under this management. JP and RDM have talked since April (3 months ago since we gained promotion) about bringing in experience and quality. They also have said be patient. Wait for the right player to become available. I think this may be a move made in haste at the present time.

The transfer market is in a stalled state at the moment. I hope this story is a rumour not a truth because I would like to think that we are aspiring to target players who have proven to be successful in the prem -even if at slightly lower hights than Man U and Villa have occupied recently.

Yes I agree there have been some bad buys, but Haber’s a young kid (unproven), Slory was a short-term measure with good pedigree, Reid was a young gamble that didn’t come off. None of them were big money and in most cases our loss has been minimal through salary. Even the likes of Sherjill McDonald we made a profit on.

You could argue Valero but it would seem from comments then and since that this was Mowbray’s buy on the back of the friendly.

Every team makes bad buys, whether it be Man Utd (Veron, Kleberson…..I’ll resist using Djemba-Djemba as an example) or Chelsea (Boulharouz, Kezman), Liverpool etc.

I think on the whole, this scouting system and buying policy has done us far more good than bad. I’d challenge anyone to disagree on that.

Re: Fletcher and Hunt, I agree with what you say but I don’t think it’s right to compare those with this. Djemba-Djemba would most likely be a squad player, our Rolls-Royce signings are still to come e.g. a target man.

My understanding of his role at WBA is that he scours the list of players available and selects the ones available on frees or up to a price and for the positions the manager reqires to build his team.
DA then provides an in depth report on each of the shortlist of players and has them watched over a number of games.

As I’ve already said on another heading, if Djemba (squared) was taken on by Man.U. and Villa, then talent he must have in abundance.

20 and 44. Nick the Greek. Ironically, and you should know this better than anyone else as it’s so close to home, if JP had been in charge of your homeland’s finances maybe Greece wouldn’t be in the trouble it’s currently in and maybe, just maybe, the rest of the European economy wouldn’t be at a tipping point either.

I suspect you’d already considered this though.

I have total faith in JP, DA and RDM. None of them work independently of each other when it comes to bringing in new players. It’s a team effort.

On another theme, Chelsea are suffering huge injury worries and other concerns ahead of August 14. Drogba, Benyaoun, Alex and Cech out, Ballack and J. Cole already left and speculation linking A. Cole with Madrid.
I know they still have a deep squad of quality players but following the World Cup too, this is as good a time as ever to play them.

I’ve seen on the official site that Albion are experimenting with making Brunt a holding midfielder, what do people think about this.

I’m no tactical expert but I’m not sure I agree with it. Brunt is one player in the side with a bit of quality, amongst a few others. Making him a holding player is completely changing is role in the team. We signed him as a winger, which is an attacking role. He also scored goals last time we were in the prem so this would take goals out the team.

We need goals from midfield as often, teams will snuff out the threat from our strikers. So having goals in the midfield will be important.

Obviously, this may work, but I have concerns. What do people think?

I too don’t know much about Ashworth’s background, so we can only go with what we know, which (to me anyway) is that he’s been fairly successful in a) setting up an extensive scouting network, which b) has flourished thus far.

If you’re suggesting that if he’s less qualified than RDM in coaching, he’s not capable of doing his job, then what right have me and you got to cast our assertions on Djemba Djemba more than either of those two?

Ideally I agree, that a manager should be in complete control of the playing side of things, but I think it’s worth considering that if RDM was in charge of everything, his average day in July might involve:

    Taking two coaching sessions;
    Spending hours on the phone enquiring about player availability;
Giving his evening up to fly around the world watching games; and
Holding lenghty contract negotiations with existing players and future ones.

To me that doesn’t seem logistically possible without one or more of those areas suffering. Also RDM is Italian, where a director of football is commonplace, so unless RDM suggests he’s not keen, I don’t see how it’s a major issue.

Finally, I appreciate the Peace joke. But I’m an Albion fan who remembers Twerton Park, Halifax, Woking, Bobby Gould, losing at home 5-1 to Crewe etc. I personally don’t want to go back to that and can see that this board and structure won’t allow that to happen.

There seem to be a number of people who post on here with short memories (33 Baggieinmanc- spot on), who demand instant success and need a reality check.

Why do a lot you keep bringing Koren into your reasoning? he was allowed to leave because he was a type of player we have to many of,he was a little light weight for the Prem, maybe he didn’t see eye to eye with RDM so why tie a lot of money up in a contract to keep him where it could be better spent elsewhere and he’ad given good service to WBA so they let him go on a free because in a ideal world they probably would’ve kept him. Didn’t have the best day and perhaps the earlier comments were a little short sighted.
Did read the comment left by Jacob. Perhaps he had Prem football when he was too young. So I am coming around to the idea of Eric more now. Thomas wasn’t expected to do much but he has done well since coming to us.

On other deals tho – I did say the transfer market was stalled in an earlier post.
However I would expect us to have been sniffing around the following players.

One looks like Grant off to Sheff Wed.
Two – Kris Boyd who decided to go to Boro
Three – Joe Ledley to Celtic with Rookie Lennon in the tin pot scottish league.
And whilst we are talking about CArdiff Players and others who haven’t cut it in the past in the prem how about Michael Chopra? He sounded like he was after a move last weekend when Sky Sports interviewed him. If Eric is worth another go so is Chopra.
Three of these 4 would’ve brought in Di Matteo’s requirements.

Grant I agree, unless there’s something moving in the Lonergan direction.

Kris Boyd. Mmmm remember Craig Beattie. Anyone from the SPL is always a risk.

Joe Ledley. I think Celtic were able to offer him much more money than Stoke or ourselves because of the anomoly where they have to pay much less compensation to Cardiff. Not sure how good he is anyway but no doubt he’ll shine in the SPL.

Michael Chopra. Now you’re talking. I suggested him originally when we got promoted under TM. I suggested him again when Cardiff failed in the Play Off Final. I think he could be a really effective player for us and in the PL he’d be happy to come in as a squad player.

Doyle is definitely a good player and I’ve never said otherwise. In a good team with proper service he’d be a fifteen goal a season man in the PL. I wish he was with us, I’m sure he’d hit that target.

I’ve said before now on here that I think Fletcher is a decent player that could have done a good job for us. I think the the only question is, would I have spent £7mill on him? Only time will tell but no doubt you lot won’t be slow in letting him know if he doesn’t live up to your expectations.

Stephen Hunt. Yes you’ve got him at a good price. No doubt that will be reflected in his signing fee and wages. If he stays fit he’ll be a good signing if not he’ll be like a financial lead weight.

Like you I have my doubts that he has what it takes as he’s never shown a great willingness to get stuck in with tackling.

Having said that I do remember a game a couple of years back when Robbo went off injured and we’d already used our defensive subs. Brunty did a very respectable job at LB. It was in the CCC but he showed good positional sense and a previously unsuspected ability to tackle.

I’m all for trying players in different positions. 9 times out of 10 it doesn’t work but when it does it can be spectacular. I remember Ray Kennedy, a decent striker with Arsenal bought by Liverpool for big money and converted to midfield. No one would have suspected that he had the ability in that position but he developed into one of the best in the country.

We had a player called Johnny Kaye. Good centre forward but converted into a much better CH.

With his passing ability if he could develop in this role it could be a master stroke.

Carson, Zuiverloon, Olsson, Cech, Mattock, Miller, Bednar, Moore, Wood, Cox, Barnes, Thomas are not good enough for the premier league.

The jury is out on Dorrans (why nobody else came in for him) Mulumbu, Jara, Tamas, Brunt and Morrison (back from injury) with three of these players being present when you finished bottom 14 months ago.

Hull didnt get a single point when Hunt didnt play, Fletcher got 12 goals in his first season with a relegated side and is only 23. Mouyokolo had exceptional ratings last season and Van Damme falls into the same catagory as Jara, Tamas etc.

Or could it be that when it comes to your own players, you realise that there may be more to their previous failings than their individual ability alone? For example, the style of football, the shape and balance of the team etc.

I applaud the substance of your posts, the majority of the anti-JP brigade post ‘JP Out’ without any sort of reasoning or plan for who to replace him with and how it would help the club.

I don’t doubt for one minute that our club has made JP a wealthy man, but it would make him a much wealthier man if we were to become an established Premier League club. The value of his shares would double and he’d be able to take more money out of the club as salary. This is why I don’t buy the JP has no ambition argument.

It’s been said a million times but we spent £23m last time, Birmingham spent £10m last season. I’m sure there’s £10-15m there if RDM wants it, coupled with more competitive wages than last time (RDM and JP have said as much themselves) but there’s no point spending it on the wrong players if we have 3-4 of the right players lined up and their clubs are holding fire until they buy themselves.

Will JP pay the wages of Sunderland, Wigan, Fulham and West Ham? No probably not, as they have wealthy benefactors willing to throw money into the club that they don’t want back. Will JP pay the wages of Newcastle? Probably not as they get 50,000 each week.

Bully did a great post on here about 3 weeks ago comparing us to the other Prem sides. Only Bolton and possibly now Blackburn have similar financial models to us, and they have years of Prem money behind them.

If we start trying to match West Ham and Wigan for wages, we’ll soon end up with a balance sheet like theirs.

I’m not hailing JP as the messiah but I think he does a good job with what resources he/we have. Does anyone know somebody who’d do a better job? The signings will come.

Don Howe brought Wile, Ally Brown, and Johnson. Statham, Cantello, Robertson, Robson, Trewick and Bomber all came through youth ranks. History shows this. Yes he does want to sell, perhaps not today but once he has overall control he will sell, walk away a very rich man without a worry for our beloved football club. Nothing wrong as long as the shareholders get a fair deal and the supporters have a football team established in the top flight.

I think what he’s said is that he would sell if someone with more money who wouldn’t damage the club came in.
The last time we had a football team established in the top flight was the early eighties. This is the closest we’ve come to it since then. So cut the bloke responsible for it a bit of slack.
There’s an old saying ‘beware what you wish for.’ If JP decides he’s had enough of the sniping and sells up, the future could look very bleak.
Unless you have a Plan B that is.

History also shows that Stoke City spent more than 100% of their turnover on wages/salaries in their first Premiership season. If they’d not survived, they’d have been in a terrible pickle.

For every Stoke that did it, there’s a Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County or Leeds United that didn’t.

It’s easy for us to say after the event that it wasn’t enough, but ultimately we spent more on our last visit to the Prem than almost all teams around us.

JP can only do so much. If he sanctions £23m of spending, it’s not him to blame that it gets spent on the likes of Valero, Moore and Meite.

If TM had spent that on Barry Ferguson, Lee Bowyer, Chucho Benitez, Scott Dann and Roger Johnson, we might’ve finished tenth and we’d be all lauding him as a hero.

You ask he learns his lessons from last time, so he limits the transfer funds and makes more available for wages yet you are crucifying him before the end of July. Give it a chance.

    99. We stayed up fairly comfortably last season in the end and we’ve added to what we’ve got.

If you think the likes of Hunt, Jarvis, Kightly and Doyle wouldn’t walk into your team then your having a laugh.

Weem in grave danger of becoming a total laughing stock if the story about our interest in Eric D-D has any substance. From memory he could’nt tackle a fish supper nor trap a bag of cement…the only thing he was lacking….was ability !!

Its getting to the tragic stage now I’m afraid and once again the chairmans talk about spending big seem to be just more hot air. We all know that JP is keen to sell the club, so I guess the healthier our ‘cash at bank’ situation will mean a higher price for him. With the new season soon to be upon us, I’ve never felt so depressed about the aura of apathy that’s surrounding the club that means so much…to so many.

Warren, love the banter but dont think Mowbray wanted Moore that was done solely by JP because of the Davies situation at Villa. Tony never wanted Moore. Also he is just about highest earner. I still struggle with this £23m spending but if you account for wages over the period of the contract then possible but we have not accounted this year for Greening & Robinson & that is about £7m income when we talk over being £10m in debt. I admire your faith in our Chairman, at least Streetlybaggie understands wider picture!

No Simon,Ronnie Allen was the scout who found Cyrille but he was signed just before he took over from Johnny Giles in the summer of 77. Also Godden made his debut at Spurs in March 77.

RDM, JP and DA all know we need two more quality strikers. They are lining up loan deals to off load some of our periferal strikers so that competition will be fierce in that department.
We will get players in. We already have a very strong base to go from.
Despite what is being said about most of our side being relegated bottom last time here is a more than likely starting 11:
Carson, Jara, Olsson, Ibanez, Cech, Brunt, Dorrans, Thomas, Djemba-Djemba, Mulumbu, and new striker.
There are only 3 players who regularly played that season 4 if we don’t sign a striker and one of them was our top scorer that season.
We are a very different prospct this season and I hope teams will write us off as most fans have, because we have the ability to prove them wrong this time.
As a great book once said,

If JP was so concerned with swelling our current ‘Cash at bank’ figure for a quick sell, why would he defer a £5m transfer (Valero) for a year when the benefits would only be fully realised in our 2010/11 tax return, which will be submitted in March 2012?

If JP wants the value of the club to rise, us establishing ourselves in the Premiership is surely the quickest way to achieve it?

JP can be blamed for many things, but a slow-moving transfer market isn’t one of them.

Streetly106. This old chestnut gets aired regularly. Johnny Giles was astute as a player-manager, astute enough to use Ronnie Allen to assess who was worth buying. You will discover that when Regis was offered for £5,000, the directors said,’No thanks’, but Ronnie said, ‘OK, I’ll put up the £5,000, (a goodly sum in 1978) and then when he succeeds, I’ll sell him to the club’. They bought him then. Johnny and Ronnie knew more about good players than anyone at the time. From memory only, Ronnie took over when Johnny walked out of the club and in the few months up to Christmas, took us to 4th in Division 1, playing the sort of football we wallowed in. Then, our directors of the time, wouldn’t give him a contract, the Saudis came in and he left. A DAMN DISGRACE ! A ‘Bosses v Workers’ story of those days of yore.

You’re right Johnny Giles was manager but he did the coaching and Ronnie Allen was his assistant and did the scouting and signing, a bit like Peter Taylor with Brian Clough. In modern day credence he’d be called Dan Ashworth. Godden was signed under their stewardship as well. One of the reasons Giles failed the second time around was the lack of a Ronnie Allen.

You’ve got me on Ashman signing Johnny Wile, if he did it was probably the only good signing he made.

Thumbs up for the banter as well, it’s obvious you’re a proper, genuine supporter which is what it’s all about. Still…….I can’t bring myself to agree on JP!!

The £7m income re: Greening/Robinson wasn’t accounted for in the £10m debt because their transfers took place after the date to which the accounts were made up. However they’ll have been “accounted for” in budgets drawn up and considered from the days the agreements were put in place, which doesn’t necessarily mean “the transfer budget’s spent” as some people seem to have taken it.

I suspect you’ll see a slightly different overall reserves/debt figure this year with the write-ups on player values (estimates), that were the main reason for the debt figure in the first place.

All this talk of creative accounting, JP doesn’t do these accounts himself, they are independently audited within standard accounting practice. He can’t ‘lose’ £10m on player write-downs if it’s not the standard way of treating an asset.

For reasons for us not being loaded, see the ‘Wages/salaries’ column in each year’s accounts.

Anyway to the current situation, I think your cynicism’s healthy, but until midnight on August 31st, who are we to judge whether JP has intention of spending or not? Do you not think you and Streetly are being prematurely judgemental with this?

    Miller (£1.5m), Moore (£3.5m), Meite (£2m), Bednar (£2.5m), Valero (£4.7m), Olsson (£1m), Zuiverloon (£3.25m), Carson (£3.5m).

That’s £22m, Donk and Fortune loan fees would’ve come to some as well.

Miller and Bednar were loans made permanent, but the summer spend was still well over £20m.

There are teams who have spent less and stayed up, we can’t just blame JP every time.
