Albion losing out in Lee Grant race

Goalkeeper Lee Grant looks set to sign for Burnley in the next 48 hours despite a last-minute enquiry from Albion.

The Baggies contacted Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend about the 27-year-old, who was on the list of potential summer targets to rival No.1 Scott Carson.

But Albion have not converted their interest into a bid, leaving the way clear for Burnley to clinch a £1million transfer.

Grant is due at Turf Moor tomorrow for a medical and to complete the formalities of his switch to the Championship club.

That transfer deal to be in doubt yesterday when the Baggies made a fresh enquiry, but Albion officials now appear to be looking elsewhere.

Grant now looks set to link up again with former Owls boss Brian Laws, who is now in charge at Burnley.

Albion are still in need of a new goalkeeper, with Preston shot-stopper Andy Lonergan still their preferred target.

But those negotiations appear to have reached impasse, with the Deepdale club wanting as much as £2.5million for the 26-year-old and the Baggies unwilling to increase their third failed bid, believed to have been worth less than £1million.

Sunderland’s Marton Fulop was another man on the Baggies’ shortlist, which was drawn up by new goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely.

But the Hungarian has now been targeted by Spanish side Hercules and Albion would need to move quickly to pull off a transfer.

The Baggies are also awaiting news of young goalkeeper Luke Daniels, who limped off with a back injury before Saturday’s friendly with his loan club, Bristol Rovers.

Daniels was due to start for Rovers against his parent club after making a season-long loan move last week.

But the 22-year-old went down in the warm-up at the Memorial Stadium with a recurrence of a long-standing back problem and Pirates boss Paul Trollope admitted his concern at the injury.

He said: “It is a worry. We are going to explore it over the next 24 or 48 hours.

“It’s a worry because we have committed to a season-long loan for him and we don’t really know the extent of the injury.

“It’s an injury from the back end of last season that we hoped and believed had cleared up.”
