International main event set for Civic

Boxing at Wolverhampton Civic Hall goes international on September 5 as two welterweight stars away from our shores clash in a main event title fight.

Ghana’s Philip Kotey, a top contender for Denton Vassell’s Commonwealth crown, fights in the United Kingdom for the first time against Sweden’s Olympic star Patrick Bogere, with the vacant International Masters welterweight belt on the line.

Bogere boxes in the Black Country for the first time but memorably made his UK debut at Coventry’s Skydome in April, giving West Bromwich’s former British welterweight champion Young Mutley a real run for his money in an eight-rounder, before losing a controversial points decision by one round.

The Ugandan-born Swede has real pedigree after representing his country at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, also holding a win over European champion Paul McCloskey in the amateurs, and was unbeaten in five straight pro fights before facing Mutley.

Kotey is an eight-year pro and a dangerous big-hitting southpaw in the ring, with 14 of his 20 wins coming by way of knockout.

Now 28, Vassell and his Commonwealth belt are the aim after a title fight with previous champion John O’Donnell didn’t materialise last year, but Bogere will be coming to the Black Country to throw a spanner in the works.

The chief support bout is another 10-rounder with a title on the line, as Halesowen’s boxing Royal Marine Keith Sheen attempts to unseat British Masters welterweight champion Sean McKervey, who wrested the belt from another Black Country fighter in West Bromwich’s Wayne Downing four months ago.

Also on the bill are Coseley light middleweight Jamie Ball and Stafford’s only professional boxer Rob Hunt, who will both box six-rounders.

Amateur star Lee Glover, an ABA Midlands champion and two-time national semi-finalist, also continues his path to stardom with a four-rounder against dangerous Frenchman Yannis Lakrout.

A man on a mission will be Essington’s aggressive light middleweight Ben Wilkes, who will be looking to bounce back from losing his six-fight unbeaten record to Janis Chernouskis in May.

Returning to the ring is Dudley’s big-punching welterweight Jason Welborn, who will end just over 14 months of inactivity with a stern test against tough Waddington trier Ryan Clark.

There will also be an outing for Aston’s lightweight flier Chris Truman, while West Bromwich light heavyweight Steve Timms continues his comeback in his first fight on Black Country soil for over six years. Walsall middleweight Bobby Wood completes the line-up.

For tickets, call the call the box office on 0870 320 7000 or promoter Paul ‘PJ’ Rowson on 07976 283 157.

The show will also be broadcast online live on pay-per view at a cost of just £2.99, through Hatton TV at www.hattonboxing.tv.
