Team ethic is key to success for Albion’s Graham Dorrans

Graham Dorrans is three weeks away from the glare of the Premier League spotlight.

But Albion’s brightest star is adamant he must not be the focus of all the attention.

Dorrans is gearing up for his first full top-flight season on the back of an award-winning campaign in the Championship. And his stunning role in the Baggies’ promotion allied to a summer of speculation surrounding his future ensures he will be the focal point for any national attention on The Hawthorns.

Yet, having penned a new four-year contract with Roberto Di Matteo’s side, Dorrans is convinced only a huge team effort will bring success in the new season.

“There is a great bunch of players here with great talent and everyone will gel together,” insisted the shy, unexcitable Scot.

“It’s not just a focus on me, it’s everyone in that dressing room and there are a lot of great players, as I keep saying.

“The attention does multiply a lot in the Premier League, but we’ve got players who can cope with the pressure when we go to big grounds with big crowds.

“I’m sure everyone will be able to cope with that sort of pressure.

“The lads here have always been together since Day One.

“That was one of the things that made my decision to come down in the first place.

“They’ve been brilliant since then.

“Everyone is so together and looking forward to the season.”

Dorrans got his first taste of Premier League action two seasons ago when, with Albion toiling near the foot of the table, a then-unknown Scottish youngster was thrown into the action by Tony Mowbray as a final throw of the dice.

His presence could not slow the Baggies’ slide towards the relegation trap door but his performances were enough to suggest to the Hawthorns faithful that they had a future star on their hands.

His Premier League season was ended prematurely by a broken foot, but when Mowbray left and Roberto Di Matteo took over the Italian installed Dorrans as the central figure in his Championship side.

The head coach was rewarded with a fabulous season from the £150,000 signing from Livingston, who ended the year sweeping the boards in Baggies awards and with a place in the Championship select XI.

Now the 23-year-old believes he is ready to test himself for real on the Premier League stage.

And he is expecting a different approach from Di Matteo’s men to the often attractive but heavily-criticised style adopted by Mowbray.

“Hopefully I can weigh in with a few goals and a few assists,” said Dorrans.

“I’m sure the gaffer will have his thoughts on what formation he is going to play but, with the formation we have played in pre-season, it’s been nice to get a free role and hopefully I can be creative and score a few goals.

“Two years ago it was a long season and when it finishes you deserve to be where you are,” he said.

“We played some good football but didn’t score enough goals. The lads did well and put a full shift in for the whole season. It was just unfortunate it didn’t work out.”
