Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Wolves still after Michael Mancienne
Thursday 22nd July 2010, 10:59AM BST.
Wolves are still hopeful of landing Michael Mancienne – despite ongoing talks to snaffle Guirane N’Daw on loan.
Ideally, the club want to sign both defensive midfielders in what is seen as a vital position by boss Mick McCarthy.
Chelsea utility man Mancienne has always remained a target of the manager, but now the fee is proving a stumbling block in the bid to re-unite him with his Molineux team-mates from the last two years.
Wolves have long been prepared to pay up to £4million for the former England under-21 international, who played an important role in steadying the ship in the second half of last season on loan from Stamford Bridge.
But it is understood that Chelsea’s valuation is higher than Wolves’ at the moment and there is some work to be done to secure his release. In any case, they still have to sell before they can buy.
McCarthy wants to have his options covered by the time he has to name his 25-man squad at the closure of the transfer window.
And Wolves hope that the traditional flurry of activity, at the end of August, will lead to Mancienne’s signature.
The club’s pursuit of another long-term target in the middle of the park – N’Daw – is complicated by the fact Wolves want the 26-year-old Senegal international on a season-long loan.
This comes after, so far, failing to secure the incoming funds they want from players they are prepared to offload, such as £2.5million-rated Andy Keogh, Stefan Maierhofer, Matt Hill and Greg Halford.
Maierhofer is wanted on a season-long loan by German second division side Duisburg.

i would love us to buy mancienne hopefully we can find the middle ground with chelsea and reach an agreement.
one worry is that we need to sell players first to get some money in. apart from keogh i can’t see any of the players listed in the article bringing in decent fees, when you think of what we paid for halford and hill, it might be that we just have to get them of wage bill.
come on the wolves

surely, if we are prepared to pay 4m for Mancienne, we will get him.
COME ON YOU WOLVES – excited for the season

Am I the only one who thinks Mancienne’s reputation is far better than his performances ??
He is a decent player but the whole “Chelsea starlet” thing seems to have blinded people to the regular gaffs and positioning erorrs he makes through the season.
I had hoped he would have got better and better with amount of games we give him but at best he has stayed still – no wonder Chelsea don’t seem bothered about him.
I would take him for around £2 million max but any more than that and we are just paying for the fact he comes from Chelsea.
I think we will have some serious defensive issues with the this lad and jelle.
No worries. The Molineux 4 will all move on as the window begins to shut and transfer activity really digs in. Whether we get what we want is entirely another matter.
Ive never seen N’Daw, but i do believe signing Mancienne would be fantastic for the club. He had a decent season last year, and its obvious that at his age, he can only keep improving.
I have it on good authority that the stumbling block with Mancienne is that Chelsea want first refusal on Zeli Ishmael (wonder kid) as part of the deal.
We have to go all-out to get Mancienne. He’s proved he can do it.
Mancienne would be a great buy. He can play in a number of positions but I think his best position is defensive midfield.
He was great in that position towards the end of the season, sitting in front of the back four and breaking up play
I don’t think with his stature he will make a great commanding centre half at this level. However, he is mobile and quick enough to play in midfield and reads the game well.
The fact he is young and English means I would take him over N’Daw, especially in light of the new rulings.
I hope we can sign him.
Mancienne would in my opinion be a great signing. He’s still relatively young and not the finished article, but has shown enough ability last season to warrant Wolves splashing out to sign him.
If it comes to a staight choice between N’Daw and Mancienne, then it must be Mancienne on the basis that he has already got Premiership experience and he qualifies as a home grown player.

4) Brunmol,
“I think we will have some serious defensive issues with this lad and jelle”
Are you another one of these windup merchants who has his favourite players, and automatically decides somebody is a weak link BEFORE they have seen them play, it seems that you are?!
Year after year people like you have slated player after player and it has held us back. Yes you pay your season ticket fee, but blimey if you haven’t anything intelligent to say then don’t bother!
Let’s get behind whoever wears the old gold and black, and give them all of our support!
For the record, I believe Jelle Van Damme to be a cracking bit of business, and he’ll give us that bit of bite and quality we were so lacking in at times last season

I’ve been saying all summer that defensive mid is the area we need to strengthen most urgently, citing a lack of alternatives to Henry for that position. Against Bohemians I believe Foley came on and played there (correct me if I’m wrong – I wasn’t there on the day!), so perhaps Mick feels he already has the requisite cover in his squad…
Mancienne has showed he is prepared to put himself about, and crucially to put his foot in. There are question marks over his positioning when playing centre half, but he reads the game very well and is certainly more than capable of playing defensive midfield at prem level.
I don’t know too much about N’Daw, but I’d never heard of Foley, Kightly, Jarvis or Henry before they joined us either. We’ve been following him for a year and there must be a reason for that.
Whatever decision the 3 Ms reach will be made in the best interests of the club, and I trust them 100% to continue to deliver for us.

7. I hope you’re wrong. That kid is supposed to be absolutely phenomenal. Clearly we’d be cutting our nose off to spite our face if we let Chelsea within 50 miles of him; Mancienne is good, but he doesn’t warrant that kind of deal!!

Michael did very well in the holding role and I thought his performance at Arsenal in the 1.0 heart breaker was exceptional. Bring him in if possible. He will stregthen the squad. Anyone know when the season tickets are being sent out !! WWFC FOREVER !!

how about nigel reo-coker from veeeeeeeeeeeeela??

Don’t need negativity if you want that support them down the road.

Mancienne is not on the Chelsea squad list or the reserve list at the moment

My only concern here would be that these two would complete the whole 25 and we would then have only 3 strikers in the 25 squad plus Vokes, Hemmings, Winnall from the under-21′s. Obviously Ward could be used as a striker.
As someone has pointed out earlier, the four up for sale are not going to generate too much money. We will not get £2.5m for Keogh for starters!
Laughingwolf what authority u heard that Chelsea wants Ismail.?? Makinging up jackanorys again. Same rubbish different season!
If we could get Reo-Coker for 1 or 2 million then that would be a good piece of business
Report abuse
Who cares if Chelsea want first refusal on Ismail ? All that means is that if we ever come to a point where we’re going to sell the kid is that we have to offer him to Chelsea before we accept bids from other clubs. They’re one of the richest clubs in the world so they could help start a big money bidding war in that situation. Its not like we’re fixing a future transfer for the kid with an agreed fee. We’re just having a gentlemans agreement that we’ll give Chelsea fair chance to sign him if we ever have to move him on.
Any one know what happened to Zeli Ismail he looks to have dissappeared and was going to be the next wonder kid?
Mancinne is not worth the chase.
As for our young guns not only Ishmail they have to be allowed to be part of the club and be given there oppurtunitys at the club in the cup competitions etc.
Sure we want Mancienne, but get rid of Keogh at your peril, he is the ideal foil for our new strike force, and a real team player
Report abuse
I think Ishmail(?) is being protected from the media whilst he’s young enough to be sheltered. If Wolves consistently trumpeted his name all over the place, he’d have left for one of the big clubs amid a media maelstrom by now- it’s playing politics and so far it seems to be working.
Mancienne will be excellent investment, he has every chance to be a top centre half within the future, technically one of the best players we had last season, yes a bit weak physically for central defence and some will say he’s short. That didn’t stop William Gallas or Carlos Puyol, so personally I’ll pay what ever Chelsea want.
On the defensive midfield areas, we have Henry, Foley can do a job there, our new Belgium player was reported to being able to play the holding midfield role as well and apparently Zubar started out as defensive midfielder. So how many do we need really? If Milijas doesn’t get a chance or doesn’t come good, whatever reason then we will only have one creative passer in the centre of the field in Jones, surely we should be looking at another creative midfielder?

4) Brun Molf.
Tell us, from your outlook position on the Brummie Road End, you obviously can’t see Mancienne Or Jelle van Dam, but can you see your Italian Manager getting into a car to go to London and talk to Al Fayed ?
Hey, perhaps the new manager will bring a few signings with him.
I think Mancienne would be a quality signing, during the second half of last season he really seemed to be coming into his own sitting in front of the back 4,like everyone else,I think he’s a bit lightweight to play at centre back.I think £4 million for a future England international can’t be grumbled at.I’m thinking the next few years are gonna be a good time to be a Wolves fan,C’mon me babbies!!!!!

4. I understand some of your views but to say Chelsea arnt bothered about him I think is little off the mark,..Chelsea got him to sign a 4 1/2 year deal before he joined us last season on loan on a vastly improved contract,.. unfortunately a team like Chelsea can buy their success so are probably happy for Mancienne to be out on loan until he becomes the finished article,…thats if he make that standard,..and like you the jury is still out on him
Report abuse
Would not go any higher than £5 million for Mancienne but would pull out all the stops to get him. I wish though we would put the same effort in to trying to secure the services of O’Hara that we appear to be doing with N’Daw. O’Hara would give us a fearsome midfield and with Mancienne as well in fact I’d be very disappointed if we did not improve on 15th.
Fight, fight wherever you may be.

has the potential and proved how valuable he was during the second half of last season he has work hard ethic would sit in any position may be the right man to correct and weaknesses in the middle of park now buy him at the right price mick mccarthy

19 Superstardjbaggie, a good friend of mine works for a sports management company and everything he has told me so far has been correct and everything I ave posted concerning Wolves has been correct. He also told me that Fulham have contacted Albion regarding possible compensation for RDM but Albion have asked for too much and he will stay.
Chelsea want first-refusal on Zeli Ishmael and that is what the hold up is, he could well join on loan again.
I definitely think theres alot more to come from Mancienne than last years performances, i reckon this will be his year to establish himself and he would make the holding midfield position his own eventually if he comes to us.
There are some talented young english players we should be in for on loan deals, players like Wilshire, Cleverly(man utd), McEachran(chelsea) or Amoo(liverpool). All very talented and could add to our team where as they wont get a sniff at their own clubs.
