Hands off our kids warn Wolves
Thursday 22nd July 2010, 10:30AM BST.
Wolves have issued a ‘hands off’ warning to clubs looking to take their blossoming youngsters on loan.
Three homegrown academy graduates – Danny Batth, Scott Malone and Sam Winnall – made their debuts in Tuesday’s 4-0 win at Walsall, while another, Ashley Hemmings, scored the opener.
Batth and Malone have returned to Molineux after impressing in loan spells last season at League One clubs Colchester and Southend respectively.
Boss Mick McCarthy is expected to start receiving phone calls from other managers interested in loaning them out, after allowing Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to go to Peterborough on loan for the season.
But the manager wants to keep the group together for a season of Premier Reserve League football under development coach Steve Weaver.
He said: “I’ve no desire to let anyone go out on loan. I know we’ve let Nathan go, but he had a week with Gary Johnson at Peterborough before the end of the season.
“He’s on a youth loan so if he doesn’t play him or he doesn’t fit what Gary Johnson wants, we can have him back.
“What I really want is have that group of lads – John Dunleavy, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Scott, Danny, Ashley, David Davis, James Spray, Sam and Aaron McCarey – who’s done really well – to play and be a team.
“They can play in the reserves and Steve Weaver can have a team he can coach, rather than just one or two players like sometimes happened last season. They want it as well, to have the chance to show me what they can do.
“If they do start playing in the reserve league and pulling trees up and somebody wants them, we might take a different view.”
